"MUSICMONDAY: City Council"

There is only once and awhile that I will feature something from outside of my circle,as far as music, but I truly adore this group. I first found out about them through @JusJUBEE (via twitter) aka JuBee. JubBee is a very nice and FUNNY individual. Even though I have yet to meet him in personal, I know when I do it will be worth it. City Council is a duo consisting of Dwayne “JuBee” Webb and Perry Valentyne (what’s his real name JuBee LOL) hailing from Macon,GA. City Council has a sound that reminds me a lot of the Georgia “alternative” scene but this group has a lot more to say than just “I got money” and “HOES”. I enjoyed the songs that I was blessed to listen to and I think people should try ‘em out and REALLY listen. Here a few songs to listen to for this MUSICmonday. Hope you enjoy! - Iman Williams

"Review by Music Editor Scott LeBlanc"

The group is two rappers (Dwayne “Jubee” Webb and Perry Valentine) and the City Council Street band. When I read up a little bit about these guys I was geared towards expecting “hip hop mixed with classical”. I don’t know if that’s what I’d call it.. but from what I’ve heard, they sound good and you should check them out. I received a four-single compilation album from City Council for their upcoming album “Unsocial Commentary”. If you’re interested in hearing the entire collection or getting a hold of their full album let me know.

The first song I listened to from this group is called “Addicted” and it features Jazzy Perez. So, as I said.. I expected “hip hop mixed with classical”. I don’t know if I’d go as far as saying as this is a “club” type song.. but it’s definitely hyped up and got me pretty pumped. The guitar in this song is hype and the beat sounds pretty sick. The hook from Jazmine Perez sounds great. I like this song.. it’s good.. it’s hip hop, rock, fast, hype.. the guys have sick flow on it as well. The stacked vocals on the verses sounds sick.. the mix of hip hop, the Street Band and the guitar on the track and Jazzy’s vocals makes the combination for a rockstar track. You can check it out on their Myspace page here… ‘ Addicted ‘ by City Council.

The intro to “Boogeyman” is pretty cool. At first it kind of reminded me a little bit of the intro of a Linkin Park song for some reason.. it switches to a nasty sax melody that sounds great. This song is definitely more laid back than the first. This song is kind of weird, I like it though.. As I said, the sax sounds great and the percussion/drums are pretty cool. The subject matter is so weird and different for a hip-hop song but it still sounds good. The song features the artist Royal TP.

The keys and the organ in the background on “Where It All Began” sound nice. This song reminds me of a chill, laid back, Southern soulful hip hop song with the organ chords. Very simple beat, the drums kick and the guys sound nice on the beat. The theme is obviously where it all began for the group and although I’m more interested in the beat than the lyrics on this track, the flow still sounds consistent. You can also check out the song “Where It All Began” on the group’s Myspace page.

“On Tha Block” is the last of the four song single compilation I received. This song has some interesting things going on. It’s another hype track, similar to the first of the four. The horns and brass sound nice and the keys in the background remind me kind of a West coast feel.. even coming from a Southern group. I don’t know if that was on purpose or not but it’s an interesting addition. I can’t really get behind the lyrics cuz I’m not from the block and don’t relate at all haha.. but it still sounds good and definitely has had me banging my head for the last little bit.

Unfortunately the guy’s only have 2 of the 4 songs from their upcoming “Unsocial Commentary” album on their Myspace page but you can still check out some of their earlier work on the page. I wasn’t really sure what to expect from these guys but they have an interesting sound and I like some of their stuff.. I would recommend checking it out for something different for hip-hop fans.

Get in contact with me if you’re interested in hearing some more of.. or getting a copy of the upcoming album.

Cheers!

Bio

Based out of Macon, Georgia, the group has rapidly transformed the Georgia hip-hop landscape since their 2007 debut. Now, City Council has come into fruition as one of the most recognized and top favorites of the Macon music scene. Alongside their three man full-performance ensemble, “The Paper Street Band,” City Council has quickly climbed to the top of Macon’s musical hierarchy and is not showing signs of slowing down. They have showcased alongside bands such as: The Gym Class Heros, Floco Torres, Citizen Kane, Rollybots and countless other high profile acts. As of late, City Council has also gained a significant fan base and an air of notoriety—having been voted “Best Live Local Performance” at annual music festivals such as “Bragg Jam,” have been recognized and nominated by the 11th Hour publication’s “Readers Choice Awards,” and are consistently covered in local magazines and publications such as the “11th Hour” and “Food and Culture.” In addition to their extensive print media coverage, City Council have also performed on multiple television shows, including DanTV and WMAZ13’s Music Spotlight.
