BandPopSoul

Soul, Rock, Reggae. If we had to do it in three words, those are the ones. Welcome to the era of Urban Rock Reggae, created by cityfolk and coming to a stage near you...

Biography

From the outer-soul of Toronto comes cityfolk, a smooth blend of socially driven lyrics, simple grooves and beautiful vocal harmonies.

Founded by Jay Byrd (guitar/vocals) and King Iyah (bass guitar/vocals), cityfolk combines the social conscience narrative of The Wailers, the soulfulness of Motown, and the earthy, funky sounds of artists such as Ben Harper and Leela James to produce urban rock and soul reggae music. Through their own determination and the support of a loyal fanbase, cityfolk's approach to music is brought to life with the help of their bandmates: ifree on percussion, the doods on guitar and marshall lion on drums. Together they are not only a refreshing revival of reggae's early roots and innovators, but a promising new direction for music worldwide.

Lyrics

Jimmy

Written By: cityfolk

now don't get me wrong
makin' music that's a beautiful thing
i wouldn't trade it for anything in the world
but man - there's some trials and tribulations
if you gonna be playin' this game - know what i'm sayin'?

hey now!
well jimmy just sold his guitar
said he's gonna leave the band yeah
said he's got a little girl now
and it's time he became a man

and johnny got a job today
said it's time that he got paid yeah (oh now)
said he's gonna save some cash and
maybe go to school someday
(go to school?)

and i'm in hell
baby can't you tell yeah?
i'm thinkin' 'bout walkin' out (yeah)
walkin' out that door someday
oh my my

met a friend from the 'hood
used to play the horn in high school
said he'd be a big success well
now's he's just a local fool
(yeah that's what they call him)
and there's so many hills to climb
i'm searchin' for the rainbow's end eh
i don't know where i find myself but
i'm runnin' outta friends

'cause i'm in hell
baby can't you tell?
i'm thinkin' 'bout walkin' out
walkin' out that door someday
said i'm in hell yeah
baby can't you tell? (oh now)
i'm thinkin' 'bout walkin' out (yeah)
walkin' out that door someday
(one more time)
i'm in hell (oh now)
baby can't you tell? (whoa now)
i'm thinkin' 'bout walkin' out
walkin' out that door someday

and i won't look baaaaack

The Hustler

Written By: cityfolk

you're a victim
with sad convictions of the truth
and in this system, baby
well that can't be any use
it's just a whitewash brother
all the things that you believe
so did you think that
the devil would bring relief?

No no no no

you know i've been the hustler
ever since
slippin' under
the electrified fence
retribution - is what i bring
for the pain and strife and suffering!

you see the problem
but you don't see the other side
so fight the good fight
and see it all through hustler eyes (yeah, yeah)
it's just hypnosis baby
like the matrix you've been fooled
so listen to me
be the hustler
and don't be used

oh whoa oh

i've been the hustler
ever since
slippin' under
the electrified fence
retribution - is what i bring
for the pain and strife and suffering!

i've been the hustler
ever since
slippin' under
the electrified fence
retribution - is what i bring
for the pain and strife and suffering!
