Bio

CITYFOLK is an acoustic folk group that plays their own original compositions as well as music spanning
from acoustic contemporary folk to country folk/rock. Originally from Washington, DC, they have played at
various coffee houses, folk clubs, weddings, and festivals. Currently residing in North Carolina, the group consists of Jane Muldoon-Smith (lead vocals and guitar), along with husband Peter Smith (lead and background vocals, lead 6 and 12 string guitars and mandolin) and their daughter, Joanna, on acoustic upright bass.

Known for their tight vocal harmonies, varied instrumentation and repertoire, CityFolk has performed at
numerous local coffee houses such as Sacred Grounds coffee house in Durham, the Bynum General Store, and
Common Grounds in Apex. They have performed at several restaurants including the Irregardless Café in downtown Raleigh, General Store and Café in Pittsboro, the Wolf’s Lair in Mt Airy, and the Bear Rock Café. In addition, they have performed in numerous festivals including Cary Spring Daze and the Apex Today and Yesteryear festival. They have opened for such national acts as singer-songwriter Kate Campbell and Nashville’s Vince Leggett. Pete
has shared the stage with Grammy winning guitarist Al Petteway. They were featured performers at many of
the Cary Christmas Tree Lighting ceremonies where they wrote and performed a song to commemorate the
event to rave reviews.

Background

Jane performed in the DC folk music scene while attending college there, having shared the stage with such local DC celebrities as Mary Chapin-Carpenter. She is also an active member and soloist in the Symphonic and Chamber Choirs of the Concert Singers of Cary. She has sung in several programs with the choir and the North Carolina Symphony. Jane has also been selected to sing the National Anthem at Durham Bulls games.

Pete is a classically trained guitarist having studied music at The American University with John Marlow, a protégé of Andres Segovia. Pete played solo guitar for many years in the DC area including several folk and rock bands before joining with Jane to form CityFolk. He expanded his performance credits to include writing and performing a portion of the score used in the Applause! Cary Youth Theater's 2004 production of the “Pied Piper of Hamelin”. He has studied with noted jazz guitarist and Chapel Hill resident, Howard Morgen, and has recently picked up the mandolin.

Joanna served as the Principal bassist for the Triangle Youth Symphony and has performed in several concerts at the Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. She is a North Carolina All-State musician, plays guitar, and provides backup vocals.
