Biography

As a group, the Evertones have headlined in venues like Nashville's world famous "Wildhorse Saloon" and the Kerrville Folk Festival Mainstage.

They have played everything from corporate shows like the National Convention of Girlscout Leaders to festivals, clubs, house concerts and listening rooms across the US.

CJ is the 2008 winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival ‘New Folk’ Award for songwriting

He was singer/lead guitarist for Milwaukee Iron, first Rock band to tour China, had a Top 10 Indie single on Pristine Records and has had songs recorded by James Otto (Mercury), Jason Whitehorn (Arista) Mustang Sally (Curb) and others, with airplay on NPR’s All Things Considered, the Rick and Bubba syndicated morning show and on Car Talk.

He was a founding cast member/writer for public radio’s Roadside Attraction, a frequent guest on the WSM-AM (home of the Grand Ole Opry) show Opry Star Spotlight and has also played on the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree for radio audiences in the millions.
CJ has shared the stage with Dr. Hook, Foghat, The Pointer Sisters, The Byrds, Shawn Mullins, Bad Company, Black Oak Arkansas, The Georgia Satellites, Brad Paisley, Juice Newton, Humble Pie, Great Divide and many others.

What people say about CJ: “a true genius” (Ralph Murphy, ASCAP VP of membership), "A brilliant writer" (Chris P. James, editor, Shake Magazine), an “amazing guitar virtuoso” (Buzzy Renales, pres., Cubbyhole Records), ‘the best unknown songwriter in Nashville' (Bart Herbison, Executive Director, Nashville Songwriter’s Association), “You are so eloquent! I LOVE - underline LOVE - your writing!!!! You can paint a picture like no other!” KK Wilson, producer; Opry Star Spotlight. “That mother****er can sing the Blues!” (Bonnie Bramlett).

Also, he emceed the 2006 Miss Plus America pageant, was the Keynote speaker at the 2005 Chicago Songwriter’s Conference, is the only performer ever to receive a “Standing O” award from Hobo Joe’s Songwriter Café in Nashville, is a regular featured performer at Nashville’s famous Bluebird Café and at the Frank Brown International Songwriting Festival and has had several books published, including The Everything Songwriting Book (Adams Media).

Jeff Gilkinson
Jeff was a Mainstage performer at the 2006 Kerrville Folk Festival.

As a member of the legendary ‘Dillards’, he recorded 5 albums with the band, played festivals and arenas worldwide and wrote several classic Dillard’s songs, including the hit “Annabelle Lee”. TV fans will remember the Dillards as the band ‘the Darlins’ on the Andy Griffith show. Jeff has also appeared twice on Austin City Limits.

He has recorded and/or performed with Delbert McClinton, John Hartford, Mason Williams, Michael Martin Murphy, Jennifer Warnes, Michael Johnson and Tom T. Hall.

He is the only member of the band currently listed in the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll, a fact which he finds ironic.

Steve Peavey
Steve is the youngster of the group, but has already compiled a serious list of credits.
As a young ‘shredder’. barely old enough to drink, he won the “Guitarmageddon” Southwest Regional U.S. Guitar competition sponsored by Guitar Center in 2000.

As a Jazz/Blues player, he has opened for legends like Al Dimeola,
Larry Carlton & Steve Lukather.

As a member of the popular Bluegrass group, the “7th Day Buskers” Steve won in the Americana category at the San Diego music awards in 2004.
When Country came calling, he joined Nashville faves “Bastard sons of Johnny Cash”, touring extensively throughout the U.S. Rolling Stone says about the band:
"Almost as bad-ass as the black-clad man for whom they're named . . . Pure Americana heart and soul . . ." The band opened for acts like Merle Haggard ,Willie Nelson, Joe Ely, Asleep at the Wheel, Billy Joe Shaver, Dale Watson, and the Derailers, to name a few.
He has also played in Rock, Celtic, and flamenco groups.

Waitin' on a Train

Written By: CJ Watson, Brian Henningsen

YOU MADE ME A PROMISE BUT YOU WOULDN’T SAY WHEN
I COULD SEE THREE YEARS TURNIN’ INTO TEN
& I COULD HEAR A LITTLE VOICE IN THE BACK O’ MY BRAIN
SAY I WAS SITTIN’ IN AN AIRPORT WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN

HE’S ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES BUT HE SURE MEANS WELL
OH, THE PRETTY LITTLE LIES THAT I TELL MYSELF
BUT BOY YOU GOT GASOLINE IN YOUR VEINS
I BEEN SITTIN’ IN AN AIRPORT WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN
SITTIN’ IN AN AIRPORT WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN

YOU SAID HONEY YOU CAN SURE BET
SOON AS MY TAX CHECK COMES NEXT SPRING
YOU’RE GONNA BE GETTIN’
THAT BIG CHURCH WEDDIN’ AND A DIAMOND RING

& THE TREES TURNED GREEN BUT THE SPRING NEVER CAME
& I WAS SITTIN’ IN AN AIRPORT WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN

SHOULDN’T BE SURPRISED WHEN A RATTLESNAKE BITES
‘CAUSE IT DOES WHAT IT DOES
YOU CAN SWALLOW BACK SHAME YOU CAN HOLLABACK BLAME
BUT IT WAS WHAT IT WAS
N’ WHAT IT IS IS OVER SO I SHOULDN’T COMPLAIN
I BEEN SITTIN’ IN AN AIRPORT WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN

I LEFT THE KEY ON THE DRESSER AND THE PORCH LIGHT ON
I KNOW YOU’LL PROB’LY NEVER FIGURE OUT WHY I’M GONE
BUT IF YOU’RE WAITIN’ ON ME TO COME BACK AND EXPLAIN

BOY YOU’RE…

SITTIN’ IN AN AIRPORT WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN
SITTIN’ IN AN AIRPORT WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN
WAITIN’ ON A TRAIN

God is Green

God is Green

(Watson, DeTrolio, Scroggie)

GOD IS GOOD GOD IS GREAT GOD IS GREEN

MY SON MY SON THIS QUESTION THAT YOU ASK
YOU’RE WANTING TO KNOW WHAT COLOR GOD IS
BUT ONE JUST ONE COLOR OR ONE NAME
COULD NEVER CONTAIN THE MAKER OF ALL THIS

GOD IS BROWN LIKE THE CLAY THAT WE ARE MADE FROM
GOD IS BLUE LIKE THE SKY AND LIKE THE SEA
AND THE MORE I SEE THIS WORLD THE MORE IT SEEMS TO ME
GOD IS GOOD GOD IS GREAT GOD IS GREEN

HE GAVE HE GAVE THE TREASURES OF THIS EARTH
IT’S PLENTY ENOUGH TO SUSTAIN US
BUT WE TAKE WE TAKE MUCH MORE THAN WE ARE WORTH
IF WE RUIN IT ALL WHAT DOES IT GAIN US

GOD IS WHITE LIKE THE CLOUDS UP IN THE HEAVENS
GOD IS YELLOW LIKE THE SUNLIGHT THROUGH THE TREES
AND THE MORE I SEE THIS WORLD THE MORE IT SEEMS TO ME
GOD IS GOOD GOD IS GREAT GOD IS GREEN

THE RIGHT THING TO DO IS EASY WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND IT
WE’RE ALL PART OF THE PLAN WE’RE ALL PART OF THE PLANET

GOD IS BLACK LIKE THE BLANKET HE PUT STARS ON
GOD IS RED LIKE A HEART THAT KEEPS THE BEAT
AND THE MORE I SEE THIS WORLD THE MORE IT SEEMS TO ME
GOD IS GOOD GOD IS GREAT GOD IS GREEN
GOD IS GOOD GOD IS GREAT GOD IS GREEN
GOD IS GOOD GOD IS GREAT GOD IS GREEN

Happy to be Here

Happy to be Here
D.O.C. 11/09/09
(Watson, Yovich)

I WAS FEELIN’ BETTER THAN I HAVE SINCE I DON’T KNOW WHEN
THEN I GOT YOUR LETTER YEAH MY BEST FORGOTTEN FRIEND
OH YOUR SORRY BUT I DON’T NEED
CONFESSIONS OF A DRAMA QUEEN
SO HAVE A GOOD LIFE AND JUST KEEP AWAY FROM MINE

I’M HAPPY TO BE HERE
‘CAUSE I’M SO HAPPY I’M NOT THERE
HAPPY TO BE HERE
HAPPY TO BE ANYWHERE THAT YOU’RE NOT
YOU’RE LIKE A COLD DARK CLOUD
RAININ’ DOWN THOSE TEARS
LONG AS YOUR THERE I’M HAPPY TO BE HERE

I ALWAYS WONDERED WHY YOU HATE EVERYBODY ELSE
I FINALLY FIGURED OUT YOU JUST REALLY HATE YOURSELF
BUT I DON’T AND I WON’T STAND BY
‘CAUSE I WON’T LET’CHA WRECK MY LIFE
AND YOU CAN WRECK YOUR OWN MUCH EASIER ALONE (repeat chorus)

LIFE’S NOT ALWAYS KIND
YEAH, YOU KEEP REMINDING ME
UNTIL YOU LET THAT GO
YOU GOT NO CHANCE TO BE… HAPPY TO BE HERE

Nice Work

Written By: CJ Watson, Al DeTrolio

SUMMER’S COMIN’ BEES ARE BUZZIN’
THEY GETTING’ BUSY BUT I DON’T THINK I BEEN BUSY ENOUGH
I SHOULD BE GETTING’ BUSY IN LOVE

SOMEBODY TOLD ME IF YOU BEEN LONELY
TREAT IT LIKE A JOB YOU GOT TO WORK IT WORK IT EVERYDAY
SOON YOU’LL BE GETTING’ THAT RAISE

THAT KINDA TALK ONLY GETS ME ANNOYED
I’D BE BETTER OFF BEIN’ SELF-EMPLOYED

‘CAUSE LOVE IS A KID IN A CANDY STORE
LOVE IS THE BIGGEST ROOM ON THE HIGHEST FLOOR
YOU CAN’T KNOW WHERE IT’LL GO IF YOU LET IT BUT IT’S
NICE WORK… IF YOU CAN GET IT

I BEEN WATCHIN’ PEOPLE TALKIN’
THEY GETTING’ FRIENDLY & I KNOW THAT I COULD BE FRIENDLY TOO
IF I GOT FRIENDLY WITH YOU

SOME PEOPLE WORRY THEY SAY DON’T HURRY
IT’S LIKE A BUSINESS BOY JUST TRY TO GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR
YOU SHOULDN’T TRY TO DO MORE

START AT THE BOTTOM AND WORK YOUR WAY UP
I DON’T SEE WHY WE COULDN’T START AT THE TOP (repeat chorus)

SO GIRL GIVE ALL YOUR SUGAR TO ME
& WE’LL START OUR OWN CANDY COMPANY

Kentucky Misses You

Written By: CJ Watson, Dani Carroll

I’VE BEEN FINE BOY SINCE YOU LEFT ME
IT’S KENTUCKY MISSES YOU
THE WIND CALLS OUT RIVERS CRY
THE HILLS ARE LONELY ALL THE TIME
SEEMS LIKE EVEN THE GRASS IS BLUE
DON’T KNOW WHY KENTUCKY MISSES YOU

IT WAS SOMETHING I GOT OVER
JUST AS EASILY AS YOU
CROSSED THAT COLD OHIO RIVER
LEFT ME HERE WITH MY BLUE MOON

I’VE BEEN FINE BOY SINCE YOU LEFT ME
IT’S KENTUCKY MISSES YOU
THE WIND CALLS OUT RIVERS CRY
THE HILLS ARE LONELY ALL THE TIME
SEEMS LIKE EVEN THE GRASS IS BLUE
DON’T KNOW WHY KENTUCKY MISSES YOU

OH-WHOA EVERYWHERE I GO
NO ONE NO WHERE I CAN TURN TO
OH-WHOA KENTUCKY IS MY HOME
BUT IF HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
WHY IS STAYIN’ HARD TO DO? ‘CAUSE

I’VE BEEN FINE BOY SINCE YOU LEFT ME
IT’S KENTUCKY MISSES YOU
THE WIND CALLS OUT RIVERS CRY
THE HILLS ARE LONELY ALL THE TIME
SEEMS LIKE EVEN THE GRASS IS BLUE
DON’T KNOW WHY KENTUCKY MISSES YOU

Not Like This

Written By: CJ Watson

AT FIRST I SWORE I’D FIGHT IT & GOD KNOWS I SURE DID
BUT THERE’S SOME THINGS IN THIS WORLD
THAT EVEN DOCTORS JUST CAN’T FIX
MY FAMILY’S ALL STOOD BY ME BUT THESE DAYS I’M NOT TOO SURE
IF IT’S WHAT IT’S DONE TO THEM OR ME THAT KILLS ME MORE

I DON’T WANNA BE A BURDEN I DON’T WANNA BE IN PAIN
ALL I DO IS LAY HERE HURTIN’ LIKE THERE’S RAZORS IN MY VEINS (AND)

I’VE PRAYED EVERY PRAYER I KNOW
& I’VE USED UP EVERY WISH
I’M SO SICK OF BEIN’ TIRED
& I’M SO TIRED O’ BEIN’ SICK
I AIN’T GIVEN UP ON LIVIN’
BUT I’VE GIVEN EVERYTHING I’VE GOT TO GIVE
I WANNA LIVE… I WANNA LIVE
BUT NOT LIKE THIS

IT’D SURE BE OVER QUICKER IF I COULD JUST LET GO
IS IT WRONG TO WANNA DO THAT LORD I JUST DON’T KNOW
CALL IT FAITH OR SUPERSTITION I WON’T DO IT TO MYSELF
BUT THERE’S DAYS I KNOW I WOULDN’T TRY TO STOP SOMEBODY ELSE (CAUSE) (repeat chorus)

GOD I WANNA BE AS WELL AS YOU CAN MAKE ME
BUT IF THAT ISN’T IN YOUR PLAN THEN LORD PLEASE TAKE ME

Kiss Me in the Rain

Written By: CJ Watson, Al DeTrolio, Alexis Dudley

Y’KNOW IT SEEMS LIKE IT’S BEEN RAININ’ ALL WEEK LONG
I COULDN’T WAIT TO GET MY WORK SHOES OFF AND THE TV ON

NOTHIN’ THERE BUT BAD NEWS
WHEN YOU GET HERE I WANT TO
RUN ACROSS THE YARD
AND PULL YOU FROM THE CAR

KISS ME IN THE RAIN ‘CAUSE I NEED TO
LET IT WASH AWAY WHAT I’VE SEEN TODAY
DON’T MAKE ME WAIT… LET ME
FEEL IT ON MY SKIN NOT STOP UNTIL I’M CLEAN AGAIN
YOUR LOVE CAN WASH AWAY THE DIRT
TAKE AWAY THE HURT MAKE IT GO AWAY
KISS ME IN THE RAIN

I SAW AN ACCIDENT TODAY ON MY WAY HOME
AND IT REMINDED ME HOW EASILY THIS COULD ALL BE GONE

SO MUCH WRONG IN THIS WORLD
SOMETIMES TOO MUCH FOR THIS GIRL
GIVE ME SOMETHIN’ RIGHT
I NEED TO FEEL ALIVE (repeat chorus)

KISS ME WHEN THE THUNDER COMES AND LIGHTNIN’ FILLS THE SKY
KISS ME ‘TIL THE RAIN IS GONE I HOPE IT RAINS ALL NIGHT (repeat chorus)

Talk About Saving the World (mix 2)

Written By: CJ Watson, Donna Britton

I WAS JUST A LITTLE THING
BUT I HAD BIG DREAMS
I’D GROW UP AND BE SOMEONE
JUST LIKE WONDER WOMAN
SHOW UP AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR
WITH ALL OF MY SUPER POWER

TALK ABOUT SAVING THE WORLD
TALK ABOUT COMIN’ THROUGH
TALK ABOUT GETTING IT DONE
WHEN EVERYONE’S COUNTING ON YOU
EVERYBODY DREAMS ABOUT THOSE THINGS
WE’D ALL DO IF WE COULD
TALK ABOUT SAVING THE WORLD
DOESN’T THAT SOUND GOOD

THAT LITTLE GIRL GOT OLDER
ALONG THE WAY SOMEBODY TOLD HER
THAT HERO STUFF IT ISN’T TRUE
I SAID I DON’T BELIEVE YOU
WHAT ABOUT IWO JIMA
GHANDI AND MOTHER THERESA (repeat chorus)

NOW PEOPLE SAY THE PLANET’S FALLIN’ APART
I DON’T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS BUT I KNOW WHERE TO START
ALL WE GOTTA DO IS (repeat chorus)
