"Art for Life buyers benefit HIV/AIDS patients"

Malcolm Parry, Vancouver Sun
Published: Saturday, November 22, 2008

MOVING PICTURES: No dough left in the economy for art? Not so, say city-based auctioneers David and Robert Heffel, who split the estimate uprights by moving $5.1-million-worth in Toronto on Wednesday. Days earlier, three-time Art For Life gala chair Sherree Mitchell, event organizer Drew Dickenson and presenting sponsor Derek Shepherd saw their live auction raise $108,000 to benefit HIV/AIDS patients and others.

That was one-third below estimate. Still, a work based on Polaroid studies for Attila Richard Lukacs' huge paintings fetched $5,000. That was a canny buy. The film is no longer made, so such works cannot be duplicated.

Artist Joe Average, 50, attended, having lived longer with HIV than without. He admired Mitchell's own art acquisition -- a towering do created by Parlour G private-salon owner Gregory Karlen.

QUICK KICK: Ever marketing-hip shoemaker to the stars John Fluevog says his 150-pair run of Beatles-reminiscent, faux-snakeskin Chelsea boots means "only every 45 millionth person will have a pair."

THE ODDS FELLOW: Greater Vancouver Doormen's Association president Alan Gauvin fronted and Ian Robertson chaired the 18th annual Doormen's Dinner in the Four Seasons Hotel recently. It benefitted the CHILD foundation for children with intestinal and liver disorders. Most attendees were nudging or had passed retirement age. They included VANOC chair Jack Poole, who was at death's door with pancreatic cancer a year ago. Despite 97 per cent contrary odds, he survived to be the event's honorary doorman of the year.

The Classical Nouveaux musical group added a younger tone. Members Tiffany Desrosiers, Cody Karey, Emily Kwee, Stuart Martin and Elise McIntosh had a combined age of 92 -- two less than fellow entertainer Dal Richards tallied alone.

Classical Nouveaux

There are many phrases to describe Classical Nouveaux: Impressively Talented, Artistically Gifted, Amazing Musicians. It is hard to believe then that Cody Karey and Stuart Martin, the two brilliant stars-in-the-making behind the group Classical Nouveaux, are still teenagers. Both of these Vancouver, BC based performers are mature beyond their years and have an on stage presence that radiates the depth of their talent. As Classical Nouveaux, Cody and Stuart have successfully taken classic songs and have given them a modern edge, highlighting their incredible strengths as artists and performers while on the stage. At their debut performance at Vancouver Fashion, Music and Arts Awards this past September they arranged and performed “The Prayer,” by David Foster and Carol Bayer Sager. Audiences were stunned as to the depth and range of this uniquely talented group. Some of Classical Nouveaux’s more notable songs are The Prayer,” “Broken Vow,” and “Because we Believe” to name a few. As Viktoria Langton , creative producer, says 'Classical Nouveaux is a gift of heart and beauty wrapped with enormous talent and the enchantment of pure sweet youth.'

Cody Karey - Vocals

As the exceptionally talented tenor in Classical Nouveaux, Cody Karey knew from a very young age that his destiny was to sing. With his musical gifts, he became a favorite, personally raising more than $7,000.00 for the children’s wing of the Prince George Regional Hospital. By the time he reached 15, he had won the Performing Arts BC provincial competition for Junior Musical Theatre. His big break came in July of 2006 when at the age of 15 he was “discovered” by David Foster Star Search Producers Su Bailey and Jaymes Foster. David soon took him under his wing and this year he performed on stage with such great talents as Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Babyface and American Idol runner-up, Katherine McPhee. As David Foster says, Cody Karey “is destined for greatness”.
Cody is currently touring with David Foster on a 10 US City tour appearing with Peter Cetera (Chicago) Philip Bailey (Earth Wind & Fire), The Canadian Tenors, Deborah Cox, Neil Sedaka and Charice

Stuart Martin

The minute his hands touched the piano keys at the age of seven, the second half of Classical Nouveaux, Stuart Martin, knew that music would be his calling. Classically trained in piano and cello, Stuart is also gifted with the trombone and french horn. Over the years, Stuart has performed with many different groups, including the Surrey Youth and the Provincial Youth Orchestra’s as the principle trombonist, as well as the assistant principle cellist in the Provincial Youth Orchestra in 2007. In high school, Stuart was recognized as the most outstanding musician and took part in jazz band and concert band winning top honors at many local, national and international competitions. Currently, Stuart is studying music at Kwantlen Polytechnic University majoring in piano with a minor in cello. When not at school, he is hard at work arranging new songs for Classical Nouveaux.

Tiffany Desrosiers

Tiffany Desrosiers voice is described as pure and melodic. Tiffany has shared the stage with acts such as Ben Harper, Jackson Browne, Bobby Kimball, and Destino. In 2006 she received 1st runner-up in the David Foster Star Search finals in Victoria and was later invited by David to perform The Prayer at the Victoria Independent Film Festival in February 2007. Tiffany has the rare talent to cross over and sing both classical and contemporary styles and is currently working on her debut album.
