RDSO, school choirs combine to perform
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Choir Kids.
The program allows local children perform choral numbers picked by their schools and arranged by the
Red Deer Symphony Orchestra’s music director, Claude Lapalme.
The orchestra accompanies the choirs.
Children from 18 schools will participate this year with the result that there will be four concerts in all,
two to be presented on Monday, April 7, and two on Monday, April 14.
All the concerts take place at New Life Fellowship Church at 20 Kelloway Cres. Red Deer.
The first concert of each evening begins at 6 p.m. and the second at 7:45 p.m.
Tickets for each concert are $5 for children and seniors, $10 for adults or $25 for a family (covering two
adults and three children o seniors). Tickets are available from participating school offices, from the Red
Deer Symphony Orchestra office at 3827 39th St. (340-2948) or at the door. - Red Deer Advocate

Bio

Red Deer Symphony Music Director and Conductor Claude Lapalme was born in Montréal and began conducting studies in Toronto in 1980. After completing the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Toronto, he furthered his studies in Holland with the help of a grant from the Ontario Government and was promptly hired to teach at his Alma Mater upon his return to Toronto.

Mr. Lapalme was appointed Music Director of the Red Deer Symphony in 1990. There he quickly established a reputation as an exceptional Music Director. The orchestra has been featured on two CBC broadcasts and has collaborated, among others, with Alberta Ballet and Edmonton’s Pro Coro. A prize winner at the Masterplayers International Competition and the Besançon International Competition, he has also received recognition awards from both the City of Red Deer and the Government of Alberta for his achievements. Mr. Lapalme has performed with many Canadian orchestras such as the Edmonton Symphony, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Laval, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Sherbrooke and the Hamilton Philharmonic, and has appeared with European orchestras such as the Moscow Radio/Television Orchestra and the Szombathely Symphony Orchestra. He was also Music Director of the Lethbridge Symphony from 1994 to 2002. In addition, Mr. Lapalme is a noted orchestrator and arranger, having composed charts for the likes of Michael Hope and Ian Tyson. He lives in Red Deer with his wife, cellist Janet Kuschak and their two children, Daniel and Stefan.
