""Clay Pigeons... This is true Americana music...""

I have been on a huge country and bluegrass kick lately. I don’t particularly know why, but it has led to me discovering some awesome new bands so I don’t have to listen to awful/bigoted mainstream country. The newest find is Clay Pigeons from Raleigh, North Carolina.

In the “Influences” section of their Myspace they list, among other things: the good life, the bad life, the name of girls, not so much the girls, the name of boys, the rain, cigarettes, coffee, neil young, patty griffin, and the band. And that’s exactly what they sound like. This is true Americana music, with plenty of twanging guitar and long drawls, songs of heartbreak, drinking, and the blues. The vocals are rough in all the right places, with some strong harmonies right where they need to be. It’s everything I want to hear in a country band.

Songs like “All You Have” put a deceptive queer twist on the tropes of the genre, as the singer asks, “What have you done to the man I love?” to his partner’s troubles, while the sound of a long, sad slide guitar plays underneath. Others, like “American Pipedream” expound a cynical realism of American life. “The Day We Drove To The Rodeo” is a tale of simple heartbreak. If you’re a queer country fan, such as myself, here is another band to add to your playlists. - FuckYeahQueer Music

Bio

The Clay Pigeons began as a singer-songwriter collective between current members Clay Misenheimer, Austin Rudisill, Dillon Myrick, and David Xiong but has since expanded into an ambitious endeavor to unite the melody, the word, and the soul. If all you can hear is the music then you're missing something with the Clay Pigeons. If all you can hear is the word then you're missing something with the Clay Pigeons. Take a moment to consider it all. The Clay Pigeons seek an airtight integrity in their craft. They have drawn inspiration from every respectable spectrum of the musical world; from the lyricism and narrative weight of Bob Dylan, the Band, and Neil Young, to the diversity and soul of the Rolling Stones, Wilco, and Amy Winehouse, They love folk, blues, Motown, country, rock and roll, bluegrass, soul, and funk and they are not shy about imbuing their passion for lyricism with a taste of each of these genres all at once.

Not only are the Clay Pigeons novel in their expression, they are also novel in their instrumentation. Each member plays numerous instruments and contributes their own material to the library of the band. The result is a Revival; a true band of multi-talented performers and brothers that stand as singer-songwriters and musicians.
