"Clear Tigers EP"

I trust Ryan Catbird with my ears. Ever since we first mentioned him and his indie (no, but seriously. Indie.) label a few months ago, I’ve been watching his music blog, Catbirdseat, like a stalker, and have panther-pounced a nice percentage of what he recommends. Therefore, while there may be debate as to whether I am worthy of telling you what to listen to, I feel totally comfortable telling you that you should listen to what he tells you to listen to… and the latest word from Catbird states that you need to stick your ears into the music of Clear Tigers. In fact, the man not only recommended we listen to them, he also “veered off towards hyperbole land” in saying that we will soon refer to them as our “new favorite band.” For those of you unfamiliar with music snobbery, to use a term of that strength is sometimes analygous to dumping at least 80% of your musical street-cred right down the gutter (unless, of course, you can back it up). I’m going to have to wait until I listen to the entire Clear Tigers EP for the final verdict, but I already am leaning towards “cha-ching,” because that’s how it normally works with the stuff he recommends. You can get our own copy for a pleasantly un-risky $3 here, but move quickly; like most of the releases from that place, the CD has been produced in a tiny little run of 200, and will probably be swarmed upon by throngs of blood-sucking hipsters, stat. - http://www.joshspear.com/item/clear-tigers-ep/

"Catbird Records Release"

I don't know if you realized it or not, but about 2 months ago, I introduced you to your new favorite band. Did you catch that? Well, what about that Catbird Records Podcast that I posted at the tail end of last month? You listened to it, and you really LOVED Track 2, and then you went and looked at the tracklist, but alas, the songlisting simply said "...from CBR 011, coming Sept. 2007." But see, now the song's listed. Because CBR 011 is here.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present CBR 011: Clear Tigers' new 4-song EP.

know everyone's going to love Clear Tigers. I know this because I loved the songs instantly, the very first time I heard them. I know this because after I posted about CT a few months back, I immediately started getting emails from people thanking me for turning them onto the band. I know this because we've sold 2/3 of our run of this new EP in less than 24 hours. Yes folks, they are going really damn fast.

It's a 4-song EP, in a hand-screened Mini-7" style sleeve. It's an edition of 200, and it's only 3 bucks.

Do as Largeheartedboy challenges in his post today; listen to the stream of "Igloo," and then try to resist ordering the disc.

Bio

Clear Tigers is the project of Nathan Akin. Hailing from the Arkansas/Oklahoma border, Nathan moved to New York to study with influential minimalist composer, La Monte Young. Inspired by musical developments in New York, Nathan drew on his years of experience playing guitar in rock bands and his classical training in composition to craft an individualistic vision of 21st century pop music.

Equally enchanted by the melodic sensibilities of Nick Drake, Tim Buckley and Ron Harper; the abstract sound-centric approach of Providence bands Lightning Bolt and Black Dice; and the psychedelic structures of Terry Riley and the Boredoms, Nathan has written a collection of songs that attempts to merge the meticulous detail-orientated tendencies of formal composition with the freely flowing immediacy of classic pop.

The debut album “Brutal” was recorded by Nathan over the course of several months in on-and-off recording sessions, with Nathan playing and singing all the parts. When performing, Nathan is joined by guitarist Jeremy Hunt Schoenherr-Lachance, bassist David Sanderson, drummer Tim Traynor and by vocalists Catherine Herrick and Lisa Baker.
