Feeling a bit camera shy

Picture the Stooges inviting Skynyrd over to Tom Waits’ joint for some peyote… there’s some musical instruments vibrating off the walls – a couple of old valve amps huddle in the corner looking surly. Then they start jamming… to a Kraftwerk song reimagined by The Fall.

The result - some kind of Intergalactic Southern Porn Swamp. Chicken-fried, feedback-basted.

That’s how a prominent Adelaide musician described Van Cleef’s first gig in December 2007. In just over a year, Van Cleef has gigged the guts out of Adelaide, carving up a sonic feast with a diverse range of local and interstate acts. Their debut demo ‘Lynching Hymns’ released in May 2008, hunkered in the top 20 local radio charts for months.

It also landed them a spot in the 2008 top 100+1 and scored them an invite to record a live to air session that went into the charts at number 2 and remained there weeks later. Word spread rapidly about this particular recording and airplay multiplied arse-fold.

In quick time, Van Cleef was selected for inclusion on the station’s highly coveted annual best-of CD compilation: DEPTHCHARGE. Van Cleef has mustered a strong punk following and they’ve also proved to be a fuzzed out tremolo hoot with the alt. Country crowd… But all genre bullshit aside, they’re a dirty rock band ready to take it to the road in between finding time to complete their debut album (April/May release).
