The Secondhand Smoke Machines want to fuel the rock and roll fire this Saturday night at the Megalodon Pub with the official release of their debut CD.
The Bathurst band features Philippe Robichaud 25, on guitar and vocals; Gino Boudreau, 25 bass; and Rene Vienneau, 23 drums. Reinvent Yourself, an independant effort recorded locally, offers eight track of folk-tinged rock.
Robichaud and his bandmates are psyched about their CD launch this weekend.
It's really exciting and were hoping to get some radio play along with some gigs in Moncton, Fredericton and the rest of New Brunswick.
The members of the Secondhand Smoke Machines met a year ago while jamming at Chez Ninines in Beresford. Robichaud had played bass with well known Bathurst blues guitarist JP Leblanc and was also in the band Some Kind of Soup. He had been composing songs on the side and when he meet up with Boudreau and Vienneau the three decided to follow their own musical directions.
"I played a few of my songs and got these guys to back me up. It started from there," said Robichaud, who performed for five years across Atlantic Canada with Leblanc, and also backed the guitarist on a two week stint in Europe last summer.
Secondhand Smoke Machines host a jam night every Wednesday at the Right Spot along with regular performances at Chez Ninines on Thursdays. Robichaud said the Megalodon will be their fourth full lengh show.
Reinvent Yourself was recorded at Robichaud's own home studio, Robber Studios, and was mixed at Ferguson Audio. The songs are primarily written by Robichaud but each member adds their own input.
As for commercial expectations, Robichaud has airplay hopes for "It's All or Nothing" especially with summer only a couple of months away.
"Its a song about traveling and letting go." he explained. "It has an acoustic folk feel with a bit of banjo. It gives you that good summer time feeling of letting loose."
Along with showcasing tracks from their Disk on Saturday, Secondhand Smoke Machines will also be dishing out cover songs by the likes of Van Morrison, Iggy Pop and Elvis, as well as by newer alternative acts.

Clock Robbers
Here is a first class delivery straight from the Alternative Rock sculptors the Clock Robbers. This 3 piece from Bathurst, New Brunswick got things shaking when they released their debut EP in November 2004 supported by their label Robber Records. They describe their music as a rock stew in a mixed brew of intensity and wit. Their first single “The Lab” is an intense and primitive track that could be categorized as rock with a twist. The band is currently on the radio waves with their second single "It' all or nothing" and are shooting their first video for the “The Lab” soon to be released in 2007.
The members are Phil Robichaud on guitars and vocals, Mario Lavigne on bass, and Rene Vienneau on drums/percussions. These guys have played with several acts and have been around the scene long enough to know that this is the band that will define themselves musically. They have performed at 2006 East Coast Music Awards, Music New Brunswick Week, and Close to the Coast in PEI. This band is focused on driving their debut album and playing for new audiences everywhere.
The Clock Robbers are already smoking something fresh. The band is already working on their LP due to be out 2007. To understand what these fine lads are up to you need to catch them in a city near you.
