"Goonwood + Wooden Swords: LSC Los Angeles"

We're excited to welcome a new contributor to Lovely Souls Club, Christopher Norwood, who joins by way of Los Angeles. He'll be reporting from his home base of Flintlock; holding down the fort as a radio host, artist, and overall cool West Coast hombre, and of course, LSC contributor. Here are a few of the man's latest/greatest tracks to get you Canadian folk better acquainted. Hopefully he decides to mosey his ass across the boarder to the land of plentiful trucks and maple syrup. Here's some background info: if he's having a bad night and needs a jolt of adrenaline, slap him the face.., and costume parties are awesome. Pretty simple if you ask me. [the last statement is referring to a picture] - Lovely Soulds Club

"Wooden Swords Debut Collab "Tutorials""

Let's see how many times I can say "ambient." Jkay. "Tutorials" is the first collaboration EP between Christopher Norwood (Repeated Measures) and Zulfikar Poluani (Of Swords). The first track is slow and simple, definitely enjoyable downtempo listening. But I like the rest better. "Handstand" has that vocal sample fuckery that everyone stays hooked on, over some clanging percussion. "Analog[ue] Plea" sounds like the soundtrack to a melancholy version of pac-man. And I mean that in the best way possible. I especially love "Tutorial" ft. Natrina Gandana, you can really see the seeds for a huge indie hit in these kids.

Check out Natrina's short story that apparently synchs up with "Tutorial."

Let's hope these people continue to make sounds together. - Fuckin' Smart

"Norwegian [Goon]wood"

It's a wonder how Christopher Norwood has time for it all: the multiple collaborations, shows, internships, interviews, and classes at UC Riverside. He took the time out of his busy schedule to [Skype] with me about his recently released E.P, internships, and Canada.

You have a lot of different projects going on, let's start with your newly released E.P, White Rose.

- Repeated Measures is my solo project and I'm aiming for experimental post-rock electronic music, any beats that fall under that realm get released under that name. I previously released Reflections and Deep Current last summer, and White Rose is the last part of a trilogy. They are all based on a relationship I got out of displaying different perspectives. Reflections has more of an optimistic and nostalgic feel, whereas Deep Current was the darker side of looking back. White Rose was mostly about how a new relationship can help you get over your past and move forward with your life - the story of progress. The way I released this EP was a little different because I released the tracks when I finished them individually rather than all at once.

On to the next one, Wooden Swords?

Of Swords is Zulfikar Poluan's (Mind Over Manners) moniker and we started collaborating last June - way before Repeated Measures existed. It happened by accident really - I had Ableton open when he was at my house one day and he asked me how it worked so, I started showing him the ropes. The E.P is called Tutorial because the songs were made as I was showing Zulfy how Ableton worked. We started the track July of last year and we just finished the E.P last week during spring break. [At first], we didn't know what to call ourselves but since Zulfikar, who was named after the sword of the Islamic leader Ali, was using Of Swords and people called me Goonwood to mess around with me - we came up with Wooden Swords.

When I first met you, you were an intern for Alpha Pup Records. How was that experience?

I interned for Alpha Pup for 12 weeks last summer, from June to September, and it was fucking dope. It is the reason why I am making music right now. I was producing stuff prior to and aside from that I was just playing guitar in a couple of bands. I got to work with heavy hitters like Daddy Kev or Kevin Moo (CEO of Alpha Pup) and Matthew David. I would help prepare albums for release and go in and tag every album in iTunes. I also had to do A&R work - there was an email address people submitted stuff for us to listen to and review, then we would forward along and help promote stuff. I was basically doing bitch work, but to be honest I really enjoyed myself. I'm grateful for the opportunity and the experience.

That's pretty cool. What was your favourite part of interning?

It has been the greatest memory of mine. I really appreciated going to Low End Theory every week for free. I would go alone sadly, I went alone every fucking week but I wanted that experience while it was available – I can’t afford it anymore, I will go once a month if I can. Mostly, I tried to observe other producers and I tried to be close to the stage, it was really just a learning experience for me. Coming out of that, I was able to approve my own production because I was exposed to other genres of music – I had heard of Flying Lotus and smaller people like John Wayne, I didn’t own the records. That just opened up a whole new thing for me. But, I felt so awkward when I saw people I worked with and I felt so small around them. They intimated me, I feel weird to this day when I see them cause they probably think I’m such a loser.

How sweet. So what are your plans for the near future?

The future is looking pretty chill right now, I am playing a show this Saturday with Gypsy Mamba and Co.Fe and I am stoked. Around three or four weeks ago, it would have never crossed my mind that I would be playing with them. I am hoping to play more shows like that. I am taking a break with Repeated Measures right now but I am also working with my sister – Something for Now, we just released an EP couple weeks ago. It’s like dream pop or cold wave – just dark but same beat as chill wave. Just see where the wind takes me – whatever projects feels the most comfortable. I’m hoping to play a lot of shows this summer and I have a manager now. Retrograde has gotten licensed to be used for a commercial in Tennessee.

Canada, perhaps?

Canada is cool I guess, I wanna go. - Krizia Victoria/ Oblvion Oblvion

"Deep Current"

When not studying at the University of California at Riverside, Christopher Norwood makes music ??under the identity of Repeated Measures . And the young man does ??good, very good even, as his mind is a dream factory that operates at perfectly enormous potential. The pieces he has left to date on his Bandcamp can attest.

Repeated Measures is also on SoundCloud . His latest EP to date, "Deep Current" is free download .

"White Rose"

Christopher Norwood is a student at the University of California at Riverside that I said the greatest good two months ago. Here he reveals, in his project Repeated Measures , a new EP titled "White Rose" consists of eight tracks that are all pieces of life, much like a diary of the last six months, from August until TODAY ' Today (this is how Christopher Norwood explains the design of this album). Musically, it navigates between ambient, Dreamwave and post-rock, as if we lived in a daydream floating constant.

"White Rose" is streaming full on Bandcamp of Repeated Measures . A small donation is welcome.

"A Recommendation: Repeated Measures - White Rose"

I've recommended Repeated Measures before, and I'm back again to recommend him again. His new release, White Rose, is another set of solid, haunting ambient music that to me, almost has a kind of Slowdive feel to it.

Check it out here. It's a name your price download, so if you can, be sure to send some dollars his way! - Night tracks
