"Who Is Cocomo"

My name is Venisi Faletau or also known to many as "Cocomo" local hip hop artist out of Arlington, Texas, better known as Aggtown. Born in Sacramento, California and raised in the Agg most of my life. I got the name "Cocomo" while in high school, being one of the only Polynesian hip hop artists in the metroplex, my father being from the Tonga Islands located in the South Pacific, a lot of people would say from the islands like coconuts and stuff like that. Hence the name Cocomo came along. It got to the point of making the name so big in the islands that they named a resort out of my rap name.

Many artist write music from a certain perspective based on their experiences. What is Cocomo's philosophy on life?

My music is derived from a lot of different life experiences that I've encountered, some good and some bad but the trials and tribulations I've encountered has built a strong characteristic in me and my music, from growing up with many family issues to the fog of war being in the military for the last 12 years and three tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, to every day struggles. My philosophy on life is three things, 1. What you eat won't make me full, meaning focusing on the success of others and worrying about them and not me, will definitely not get me anywhere. #2. There is no such thing as a free lunch, I've pushed myself as well as my music to greater pinnacles everyday not relying on others to get me where I need to go. #3. Your dream is either in bed or in the streets, you can stay dreaming or go out and go get it.
Music is one of the most powerful forms of expression how would Cocomo express himself if you could not do so through music?

If I couldn't express myself through music, I would probably be a teacher or coach, helping out those who need it, a mentor is one thing I didn't really have growing up so I would want to change someone's life for the better so it wouldn't be as hard on them as it was for me.

How do you view the rap game today? and how would you hope to influence it?

As crazy as this sounds, I view the rap game today in definite need of repair. Hip hop is like a broken leg with no medical attention, and that now is the time for the top tier of artist to break out their shell and mold the new rap game with a cast of good music, to bring the talent back into rap. I intend to influence it with music with more meaning, music people can relate to, and not just twerk or trap to..

What has been the hardest thing about being a rapper? and what advice would you give others aspiring in this craft?

One of the hardest things about being a rapper, is to get the ones close to me to come out to my own shows, I have alot of supporters but very few of my personal family or close friends outside of the underground music industry to show love and support at my shows. The best advice I could give to future aspiring artists in this craft is that networking and persistence is the key. Market yourself and never stop believing in yourself. Always seek out opportunities to better your self and help your music grow.
Where do you see yourself in the future? Tell us something that most people wouldn't know about you...do you have any weird hobbies?
I see myself in the future hitting my pinnacle moment to be named along with the greats such as tupac, biggie, jay-z and big pun. One thing that most people don't know about me outside of military and music is that I'm a pretty good juggler, I learned as a kid and picked it up really fast and got good at it.
