"CD Review"

One of the last places you'd expect atmospheric and uplifting music to emerge would be Montrose, Colorado — but that's where Cody Crump resided until a recent move to Denver. The First Movement is his debut solo release. As a member of post-rock band Edison Gale, Crump honed his ear for hypnotic soundscapes. But rather than opt for the moody, melancholy music of his old band, on Movement Crump explores artistically ambitious pop. For a guy who just graduated from high school, he exhibits surprising creative and emotional maturity on songs such as "Take My Hand," offering the kind of winsome, thoughtful perspective you'd expect from someone who's seen a good deal more of the world. Fans of Jeff Buckley will appreciate the way Crump is able to infuse each song with dark intensity without being overbearing. While many people his age aim to make utterly derivative emo pap, Cody Crump is moving assuredly into the future. - Tom Murphy - Westword

"Music Blog"

Hailing from the hills of Montrose, CO, this singer-songwriter is more than a singer-songwriter. How many do you know that tote a keyboard around with them aside from an acoustic guitar? Exactly. His young voice sings as if he has seen all the life's travails that has been thrown his way, without sounding too preachy. I would like to think of his voice sounding as pristine as the first morning snow. Le sigh. You can buy his music here and check him out here. - Julio Enriquez - Cause=Time (Music Blog)

The Up-and-Coming
Cody Crump just may be the new indie "It boy." At first listen, his music appears to carry an innocent lightness, which, on further inspection, takes on a darker and surprisingly more mature tone. Crump has the ability to touch
upon the prevailing themes of songwriting, restlessness, love and loss, with a fresh edge. This is evident in songs such as "Pack Your Things," a desperate plea to take a jump into oblivion and make a new beginning. With one foot in the land of Radiohead-inspired electronica and the other firmly placed in the acoustic playing field of Sufjan Stevens, Crump deftly mans both genres with grace. His music evokes images of a world where buttercup fields float under a perpetually gloomy sky and everyday hardships are lost in the consoling arms of fantasy. With this much intrigue, Crump most likely won't be playing free shows for long. - Madason Gray - Santa Fe Reporter

"Critics Choice"

Sometimes songwriters take well until adulthood to reach a level of creative maturity warranting attention by anyone beyond their peer group. Cody Crump got a jump start, through extensive experience in his youth, being an old soul, or both. Whatever the source of his preternatural wisdom, he reaches surprising depths in articulating the swirl of emotions and thought we all experience but find difficult to express. Whether playing alone or with full accompaniment, Crump (due at the Meadowlark on Friday, January 30) sounds like a particularly insightful and sensitive old friend helping you to understand and transcend what ails your psyche. With gently powerful atmospherics and masterful musicianship, this songwriter doesn't hit you over the head with his greatness; he doesn't need to. His vocal talent and strong songwriting are proof enough. - Westword

"All Access (Sky-Hi Daily News)"

“He is one of the most amazing songwriters I’ve heard in a long time,” said Teresa Hill, local guitarist, singer and producer with Sacred Herb Music (which put out the This Side of Berthoud CD compilation last October). - Sky-Hi Daily News

"Quote"

"In a time when the tiresome debris of mundane post-rock seems to overcrowd the industry, Cody seems to have held on to the imagination of this genre. His music is a refreshing reminder that great art is still emerging in some artists."- Christopher Coffman (Manager of the Ashen Grove music venue/ guitarist of Hope and Aria.) - Christoher Coffman

"Quote 2"

"Cody Crump is a singer songwriter that combines sensitive lyrics with high powered electronics. He's as well versed with a computer as his instruments, creating a high tech rumble that rocks."- Dave Bowman (Owner of Blue Sky Music and Books.) - Dave Bowman

Bio

Even though a move to Denver in late August of 2007 brought many changes to the life of Cody Crump, he seemed to settle in quite well. Placing second in three consecutive Battle Of The Bands as a solo act, performing live radio programs on KRFC and KVNF, being featured on radio programs such as “The Colorado Wave” and Break Thru Radio’s “All Access”, and playing shows in and out-of-state including the ‘South Park Music Tour” in Fairplay, CO and “Hyperactive Music Festival” in Albuquerque, NM, Cody kept quite busy. All the while he has been working on two follow-up albums to 2007’s “The First Movement”. If the trends continue as they have for the young singer/songwriter, then you should be hearing much more from him very soon.

Growing up in the small southwestern town of Montrose, Colorado, Cody Crump began to focus on music at a young age. With the support and guidance of his parents he began to play in numerous local acts, one of them including the well known Edison Gale. As a member of Edison Gale, Cody played many live shows in various locations in Colorado, as well as a two week tour in Austin, Texas. After the short, but successful career of Edison Gale came to an end Cody once again turned his full attention to his solo act. It was then that he began to record his debut album. At first listen it is evident that Cody Crump is a very well developed musician, especially considering the fact that he is only twenty years old. His blending of infectious melodies with broodingly dark electronica elements invokes sounds made familiar by acts such as Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, yet creates a fresh new sound that will have you listening to his album over and over. If that is not enough, Cody is also known to have one of the most original and entertaining live acts to surface in years. Mainly known for his energetic and theatrical performances, Cody Crump is an act that you should be sure not to miss.
