"Cody Marks In her State 2"

CODY MARKS - IN HER STATE: It's not the destination but the journey and on her debut full-length CD the California-based Cody Marks reveals the life passages and challenging path that now find her In Her State. This is the story of a real-life runaway as Marks left a life of trouble in Florida only to arrive near broke in Hollywood. Determined and undeterred Marks put an early band together and began to learn the ropes while she honed her craft which has resulted in a style described as Janis Joplin meets Johnny Cash. Part country with rock stylings fans of both genres should find Cody's deeply personal song writing compelling and worth listening to. "I Can't Wait for
Heaven" speaks of anticipation sung with a joyous craving. "Dear Life" is a plaintive declaration set in an acoustic bed dressed up with some organic keyboards and mandolin accompaniment. "Tiny Little World" is the closer that spins a tale of a rocky relationship that turns on an upbeat arrangement with hooks reminiscent of Blues Traveler. Cody earns high marks for her gritty
debut born out of true life tales from the road. After many years of traveling and preparing Cody has finally found a musical home in her state!

Cody Marks - In-Her-State

Cody Marks - In-Her-State / 2006 Self / 4 Tracks / Reviewed 07 November 2006

The opening of "The Hidden One" is something that would confuse listeners, as the track could also portend the opening of "Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance)" by Green Day. However, the country style of Cody Marks comes up heavily soon after this introduction, and "The Hidden One" assumes a style that is not quite unlike that of a blend of Joni Mitchell and Pete Seeger. The overall sound of Cody Marks in the early part of this EP is something that could easily make it onto radio.

While ey does not go immediately into a country or pop style, the middle-ground blending of genres will mean that individuals will listen by the barrelful to "In-Her-State". The track is three and a half minutes, which is enough time for Marks to go forth and get individuals inculcated to eir specific musical style, as well as get a general sound staked out for the rest of the EP. The country style of "The Hidden One" dissipates for "I Can't Wait For Heaven", which is a track that moves Marks back to the early nineties. I can completely hear hints of Joan Osborne in Mark's style during this track, another one that could easily be on radio stations throughout the United States.

Each of the tracks on "In-Her-State" give listeners a slightly different aspect of Marks. For example, a throaty set of vocals awaits listeners of "The One That Got Away". In a sense, it is like Marks is trying to call forth the style of acts like Bryan Adams and Warren Zevon for this track. Again, what Marks does during all of the tracks on this EP is create songs that will have a life longer than the three or four minutes that the tracks would normally run. The four tracks paint a strong picture of Cody Marks' work. There is little doubt in my mind that ey could make a strong challenge to artists like Kelly Clarkson and Gretchen Wilson. I believe that a disc of eleven or twelve songs would be more of the same solid material that individuals should come to expect by the end of this EP. Keep an ey on Cody Marks, as it should only be a matter of time before eir name is plastered on billboards and in magazines, extolling a sensible, smart approach to pop music that is not impeded by some of the problems currently associated with the genre.

"Cody Marks @ The Roxy"

Ex-SKID ROW Drummer PHIL VARONE To Perform With CODY MARKS In Hollywood - Sep. 11, 2006
Former SKID ROW/SAIGON KICK drummer Phil Varone will be sitting behind the kit for up-and-coming female singer CODY MARKS (MySpace profile) at her September 15, 2006 appearance at The Roxy in West Hollywood, California.

"I have blown the dust off my drumsticks and oiled up my limbs," Varone said in an online posting. "Remember, I'm delicate, but still amazing. This should be lot of fun. I recorded three songs for Cody's new record, and I can't wait to get on that stage behind the drums."

In a recent interview with Glam-Metal.com, Varone had the following to say about Cody Marks:

"I just did a record for an artist named Cody Marks who is a new artist over here, and she's fucking great. She's a good friend of mine and she called me and said 'Hey, I've gotta do some song's for my new record, would you wanna come in and do it?' I haven't played drums in a long time, and I said, 'Yeah, that would be cool.' We did it at this place called The Village, and like 'Rumours' was recorded there, and NINE INCH NAILS, and all these great bands recorded there, so that was cool, and I had a blast! So anyways, I'm actually gonna be doing a live show with her on the 15th of September I believe. I don't wanna be a band member, or a rock star, I just wanna be a drummer. That's why I was able to do this with her, just be a drummer, have some fun and just play." - Blabbermouth

Bio

A runaway boards a bus with a few bucks in her pocket and heads anywhere that is not where she was and arrives in Hollywood nearly broke.

Dramatic, but this is no movie. When singer/songwriter Cody Marks got on the bus, she was in a hurry. "I was running away from Miami as all my friends were going to jail or dead from drugs and car theft," Marks says. "I was released from Juvi Hall and split."

Her destination was Chattanooga, Tennessee, but she never got there. Instead, she turned up in Hollywood, California with 60 bucks in her pocket and a guitar.

Marks waited tables, danced in rock clubs and, ultimately, formed Honey House-which she describes as her "college" in the music business. Her band became a hit on the Los Angeles scene, game was survival, and Marks formed Honey House, which she describes as her "college" in the music business. She graduated: the band was a hit, regularly selling out clubs.

Sensing it was time to evolve, she disbanded Honey House to pursue a solo career. After appearing as a singer/songwriter on VH1's "Hollywood Hills," Marks headed to Nashville.

"I loved Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson when everyone else was into grunge," she says. "I wanted to learn to write like them."

While collaborating with songwriters Bobby Pinson and Daryl Burgess, she found her voice. Fans describe it as a rich blend of Janis Joplin and Cash, and intensely personal. Marks wants her audience to feel like they're kicking back on a Southern porch and just having a good time.

On stage, she fulfills a desire she's had for years through a profound connection between Marks and her fans. "It feels like I am home, communicating to my family and finally being heard," she says.

Marks looks forward to being signed by a major label, but doesn't believe that it will affect her creativity or music. "I know what kind of songs I should and shouldn't do," she says. "My voice is not the normal 'chick singer's' voice."

Listen to Marks songs like "Tiny Little World" and "The Hidden One," and you'll understand what she means. Her powerful voice ranges from a quiet to raw-edged, but it's always honest

"The song 'Dear Life' is about me holding on for my own survival," she says. "All the songs are about something that happened to me."

In a competitive market, Marks is ready to work hard to succeed. But considering what she's already seen as a child, you'd be hard-pressed to find something that can hold her back.
