"Artist Interview – Coffee Blue"

Artist Interview with Coffee Blue. - Song Revelation

"Spotlight On: Coffee Blue"

Article By: Tim Leonelli
Coffee Blue’s music is simple, yet they attract and mesmerize listeners with their driving pulses and atmospheric sounds. Their music cannot be slotted into the rock genre, because it has a freshness that the popular music scene tends to forget, and in a time where imitating artists is at an all-time high, this group is far from the industry norm. It was a pleasure to sit down with Dany Orozco, one of the band’s co-founders and drummer, to hear more about this group and their future plans.
The name Coffee Blue, unique and minimalist, seems to embrace the sound of their music. They chose coffee because of the “dark tones, but great energy,” and blue because of the “moods and state of mind” this color can create. She explained that the band formed just as organically as the sound of their name, with herself and Brie Capone – the band’s vocalist/guitarist, causally meeting in open mic sessions and feeling a spark, that would bring Dany into asking Brie to start a band together. After a few temporary musicians, they completed the group with Stefan Mabarak (bassist) and Camilo Gomez (guitarist).
Waiting For You To Move, the title of Coffee Blue’s newest CD, released mid-October, is the end product of this group’s great ability to make new music. A great example from this CD is their piece “Round and Round,” which starts with a floating and ethereal feel, and then has the drive of a percussion feature with the emotions of a ballad. Recorded in Boston, MA and Asheville, NC with the help of former Berklee student and producer and recording engineer, Camilo Rodriguez, the band identity was completed. And to add to the great skill of the recording engineer, the mixing and mastering was done by very respectable Mexican producers and recording engineers, Mauricio Garza and Ricardo Gutierrez, who were both very impressed when first hearing this group. Coffee Blue has had may doors open for them to get them where they are now, and in tough economic times, this CD proves that great things can still happen for bands.
The band has their eyes towards the future, planning to stay together for many years to come. They are already sketching out ideas for their next CD, Dany explained. The ensemble is looking for new sounds and ideas in addition to their natural style of music. The band recently had their New York City premiere and is planning on returning to the city as often as they can. They also plan on gigging in Chicago, though for now they will continue to play thoughout the Boston-area.
Coffee Blue’s CD, Waiting For You To Move, can be purchased on their website as a digital download. You can also find free downloads of their music, band information, and a list of their upcoming shows. - The Berklee Groove

Bio

Studying at Berklee College of Music, Dany Orozco heard Brie Capone sing at an open mic and knew they had to play together. After doing the necessary investigation and finding out they had a friend in common, Dany approached Brie and they started jamming. Soon after, Camilo Gomez and Stefan Mabarak joined them and Coffee Blue was created.

The band has made a unique sound with their original music incorporating folk, rock, blues and acoustic styles; with influences that range from John Mayer to Ryan Adams, Crowded House to Bonnie Raitt.

Mixing interesting hooks and powerful sounds with the emotional side we all have, Coffee Blue will surely make you remember events of love, heartbreak, anger and friendship.

When you’re all burnt out, when the only thing that will make you feel human again is a cup of coffee, when you've drank the last drop and cried all you could, it’s four in the morning and you’re blue. This is what you want to hear.
