Bio

Ever since his first piano lesson at age six, Colby knew music was his passion. "It's in my blood," he says. "Ever since I can remember, music has been one of my greatest loves."

Raised in Alaska with his four brothers, Colby began his exploration of music. It began with piano, but he soon found himself playing trumpet and french horn, and then as a high school senior, he picked up the guitar and taught himself to play. ("It was much lighter than the piano to carry," he says, "and you really can't sing very well while playing the trumpet.") He was in multiple choral groups while studying music at college, and it was there he gained a deep appreciation for classical composition as well as the great choral works.

When asked what has influenced his music the most, however, Colby does not cite a specific genre or artist. Rather he states, "I think it's probably life that has most influenced my music. Almost all of my songs have specific experiences behind them. I simply write to that which best fits what I'm feeling." And truly, Colby's songwriting blends an honest, optimistic energy with striking insight into the sometimes turbulent turns of life.

In 2004, Colby graduated from college with a degree in accounting and a minor in music. He worked as the controller of a firm in Springville, Utah, before moving to a position in Salt Lake City as an information systems consultant. He is now a dedicated musician. But regardless of what he pursues, his unique enthusiasm and vision propel him to the top. As Grammy-nominated composer and arranger Ron Saltmarsh says, "Colby is a gifted singer and songwriter, but not only that—he is passionate about what he does, and success is his for the taking. For him, the sky is the limit."
