"DJ Col Denton"

Name: Col Denton

Age: 24

Where are you from? Manchester

How long have you been DJing? Six years.

Why did you become a DJ? By accident, although looking back I think it was inevitable. I was brought up on an eclectic diet of good music. I used to listen to old rave tapes, wonder what it must have been like to be there and find out the names of tracks. My passion only got stronger when I started going to clubs and would travel all over the country to various events.

How did you get started? I started collecting vinyl. I'd get anything from old skool hip-hop, hard dance to piano house and eventually managed to get myself a set of turntables. I've never looked back.

What sort of music do you play? Across the house music genre. I don't like to be pigeon-holed or tied down to sub genres but I do have my own style which I would best describe as groovy, raw-sounding “momentum-driven” house

What has been your best gig to date? The most recent would have to be playing in Portugal this summer, that was a lot of fun!

Who are your music idols? I'm an old soul when it comes to music although I don't really look to individuals, more towards different eras such as the acid house movement in the late 80s and early 90s, to record labels such as Defected, Saved and Global Underground and clubs and events like the Hacienda and Fantazia.

What is your “in case of emergency break glass record”? That's a tough one, once again it depends on the crowd but I've got an a few cappellas which always seem to have the desired effect

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to be a DJ? Be passionate about the music you play. Focus on your tune selection and sequencing. Your mixing skills are important but too many people seem to value this more than the music itself. Learning to produce will help define your own style but producers don’t always make good DJs. Good DJs, make good DJs.

Laptop, vinyl or CDJs? Three CDJs and a DJM800 mixer.

Where can we see you play? Hopefully in Liverpool soon! I have my own night called It's All About House at Rumours on Deansgate Locks in Manchester every Saturday and a residency for Relentless at Avici White.
