Heartfelt, well-crafted, acoustic-driven songs honoring the songwriting tradition of Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Neil Young, Greg Brown, Dylan, and the Grateful Dead, with touches of Springsteen, Son Volt, the Frames, and more.

Biography

Born in a sea of corn and soybeans in central Illinois, Colin Black has moved around a lot since -- living in Spain, Holland, Puerto Rico, and various cities in the United States at different times. His music, however, is plainly rooted in the Mississippi River Valley and the American Gulf Coast, where he spent five years as a student in New Orleans and innumerable summers and holidays on the Alabama Gulf Coast. He now lives, works, plays and writes in Washington, DC.

Lyrics

Banks of the Tennessee

Written By: Colin Black

I was walking aimlessly along the banks of the Tennessee
When I got my first good look at you
Hazel eyes and chestnut hair, long brown legs on a folding chair
Pretty as the river, and I knew

CHORUS:
That there was only one girl in the whole wide world for me
I saw her on the banks of the Tennessee
Yes I had only one love, and she stole my heart from me
Right there beside the banks of the Tennessee

After that most every day I’d walk down there by the Tennessee
Hoping for another glimpse of you
But always from the other side, that big ole water fast and wide
Seemed to separate my love from you

CHORUS

Then upon one winter’s day, from the other side of that Tennessee
I thought I heard you calling out to me
In a fog of love I jumped right in, forgetting that I could not swim
That ferocious current swallowed me

CHORUS

I was struggling in the current there, when a golden plume of chestnut hair
Seemed to fall upon me from above
And a smiling pair of hazel eyes led me on to the other side
And I surrendered my life to your love

CHORUS
+
Yes I had only one love, and she stole my life from me
Right there beside the banks of the Tennessee

I Didn't Wanna Miss You

Written By: Colin Black

Didn’t want to wake up in the morning
Feel your pillow cold beside my head
Didn’t want to lay down every evening
Feeling like a stranger in my bed

CHORUS:
I didn’t want to live my life without you
I didn’t want to miss you when you’re gone

Didn’t mean to give up on tomorrow
Hole up like a hermit in my head
But it seems my dreams had all been borrowed
And your leaving me it’s left me in the red

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
There’s lots of things that I didn’t get to choose
Yeah there’s lots of things I didn’t get to say
There’s lots of things that I might like to do again
Oh where you’re concerned I wouldn’t chance a thing

Didn’t want to wake up again this morning
But every day I wake up just the same
Listen to the whistle of that northern wind
And I swear I hear it calling out your name

CHORUS

If Only Just to Say Goodbye Again (Grandpa's Song)

Written By: Colin Black

Grandpa can’t go home today though he’s done nothing wrong
Lived a love so lyrical that it’s ending like a song
Grandma passed away today and he just can’t go home
Cause he can’t face the morning there alone
So he walks and smokes in circles outside in the drive
I guess he must be wishing that somehow she was alive
He mumbles little words and phrases that I can’t seem to hear
Intended for other ears

He just wants to wake up in the morning
Tell her how he’s feeling
Feeling in the end
He just longs to hold her
If only just to say goodbye again

Every year since Mom was born at night he’s held her hand
Now they’re saying she’s gone and he just can’t quite understand
He can’t find the strength to just give up and let her go
But then again how does any man just let love go?
Instead he lights another cigarette and he looks up at the stars
Tilts his head as if to say I wonder where you are?
I think he must be crying by the way he rubs his eyes
And dries his hands on his thighs

He just wants to wake up in the morning
Tell her how he’s feeling
Feeling in the end
He just longs to hold her
If only just to say goodbye again

Grandpa can’t go home today though he’s done nothing wrong
Probably stand there smoking in the driveway til the dawn
Grandma passed away today and he can’t let it in
None of us can blame him

If he just wants to wake up in the morning
Tell her how he’s feeling
Feeling in the end
If he just longs to hold her
If only just to say goodbye again

The Last I Saw of You

Written By: Colin Black

I remember when we met / I remember what you said / When I stood next to you / I remember how you smiled / And the way my heart went wild / When you bought drinks for two / And leaned to me and said I know something we could do / And darling, I ran away with you

I remember how we drove / How the night was low and cold / And I sat close to you / How you held my body tight / And we laughed all through the night / And through the morning too / And you leaned to me and said I know something we could do / And darling, I fell in love with you

Now I’m laying in my bed / With a picture in my head / A sweet portrait of you / I remember every smile / I remember every mile / I got to spend me with you / I remember you saying you still had some things to do / And darling, well I guess that I did too / So you leaned to me and said I’ll always dream of you / And darling, that’s the last I saw of you

Goin' Dancin'

Written By: Colin Black

Sipping on tequila on a Saturday night / You’d beg to differ but I know I was right / I was right to leave you and your crying behind / I was right to eject from your suicide ride / I think I’m goin’ dancin’ tonight / Believe I’m goin’ dancin’

Build me a cabin on that Tennessee line / Set it all on fire and leave it behind / Leave it all in ashes like you done me each time / Left me in flames along that Tennessee line / I think I’m goin’ dancin’ tonight / Believe I’m goin’ dancin’

I tried to tell but you just turned away / Left me with a mouth full, nothing left to say / I believed in angels ‘til you gave it all away / I believed your lies and now I’m paying today

Sipping on a soda on a Sunday morn / Something ‘bout the sky, it’s like you’ve never been born / Couple more like last night and my pain’ll be gone / Couple more like that and I’ll be dead ‘fore long
