Bio

"New acoustic chamber, folk with a nod to traditional Americana, definitely a breath of fresh air, well thought out and excellently performed, very original."

-Richard Greene (Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys)

"Silkweed is great! This is the kind of music I like to listen to: very delightful. I like the eclecticism and the unusual instrument voicings. Brilliant!"

-Brooks Williams (recording artist: Green Linnet, Signature Sounds)

SILKWEED is a New York-based acoustic collective that features Rob Moose on guitar, national guitar, mandolin and violin and Colin McGrath on guitar, dobro, banjo and vocals. The group creates original instrumental music reflecting its diverse interests. Traces of rural southern flatpicking, Middle Eastern improvisation, and contemporary American composition blend themselves seamlessly in the music. The end result is the unique sound of Silkweed’s musical conversation between members and with its audience.

The core members of Silkweed perform with a rotating set of guest artists. Originally conceived as a trio, the collective often performs with a clarinetist and cellist. This combination of instruments yields a range of musical colors and allows Silkweed to function as a sophisticated chamber ensemble without abandoning its traditional sound.

An ideal ensemble for accompanying vocalists, Silkweed enjoys frequent performances with ObliqSound recording artist Tama Waipara. This collaboration resulted in a taping for WBAI’s Wednesday afternoon Light Show program, which ran multiple segments on the band in April and May of 2004.

Silkweed is increasingly active in the New York music scene, performing at venues such as Tonic, the Knitting Factory, and CB’s Gallery. One of the staples of its live repertoire, “The Early Game,” was recently licensed by Converse® for use in a television commercial. The group is currently developing a collaboration with veteran guitarist Brooks Williams which will yield numerous performances throughout the Northeast.

Influences: Norman Blake, Bill Frisell, Shakti, Igor Stravinsky, Chris Thile, Anouar Brahem, Aaron Copland, traditional Irish music, West African kora ensembles.
