"International celebration uncorks wine, music, art in League City"

League City is continuing its campaign to establish the city as a festival and special events destination with the launch of League City Uncorked this month.

The celebration, featuring food, wine, music and art, follows League City's 50th anniversary gala held in March 2012 and Boogie Blues & Brews, held last September.

League City Uncorked will take place 1-10 p.m. Saturday, March 23, and 1-7 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Walter Hall Park, 807 Texas 3 N.

"We think it's going to be something very different for this area," said event producer Latonia Wilson of Gulf Coast Public Affairs.

This year's international focus will be on Australia, South America, South Africa and Europe.

"We will have more than 40 international wines, along with U.S. wines from Portland, (Ore.), California and from Texas," Wilson said.

"I wanted art to be just as significant as the wine, so we will have art in every facet of the event from the food to art cars to glass etching and sculptures to the people who perform."

Artist Laura Lopez Cano will be overseeing an interactive mural with her son. She will sketch the design and those at the park that weekend will be invited to work on it.

Featured artists also will include painter Kevin Thomas of Houston.

The music line-up on Saturday will open with Grifters & Shills at 1:20 p.m. followed by Tony Henry at 2 p.m., LGM at 3:10 p.m., Collette Bruhn at 3:45 p.m., Australian Band at 4:20 p.m., Arabella Jones at 6 p.m., In Altum at 7:10 p.m. and Mambo Jazz Kings at 8:30 p.m.

The Sunday music line-up will include Grifters & Shills at 1:30 p.m., Andrew Bateman at 2 p.m., D.R.U.M. (Divine Rhythm United Motion) at 3 p.m. and Mango Punch! at 5:30 p.m.

Bruhn, a 12-year-old Clear Lake resident, has been spending the weeks leading up to her League City Uncorked performance waiting for a callback from the producers of "America's Got Talent," who are considering her for the show.

Last year around this time, the singer, songwriter and model was making her singing debut in Nashville. Since then, she has been invited to return to Nashville this summer to work with RareSpark Media Group Inc.'s songwriter team.

Bruhn said she's looking forward to performing in her community during League City Uncorked.

"I like doing any event I can," said Collette, who also is a Junior Girl Scout with Troop 7651. "I'm excited to do it. There's going to be lots of other artists, so it should be interesting."

In addition to on-stage entertainment, League City Uncorked guests will see an eclectic mix of strolling entertainers including stilt walkers, bagpipers, flamenco guitar artists and belly dancers.

Also planned are a mini beer garden, daily grape stomps and an "I Love Lucy" Look-Alike Contest.

Participation in the grape stomps will cost $5, and entry into the contest costs $15.

There will be learning opportunities at League City Uncorked, too. Winemaker Marta Sanchez Lastowska of Santa Fe-based Haak Vineyards and Winery will be speaking to guests about her work.

"I'll be making a small presentation on the basic winemaking process; the differences between wine making for red wines and for white wines; and the different wines of Europe, Australia and the United States. Then I'll talk about wine tasting and pairing."

Sanchez Lastowska, who also plans to speak about Texas wines, said she loves the idea of a food, wine and music experience.

"People will be able to learn about wines and buy wines, and it will help the wineries in Texas."

Also to be featured at the event will be Clear Creek Winery, Vineyard & Resort of Kemah.

Foodies will find activities geared to their interests, too. Four free food demonstrations will be held Saturday, with three more to be held Sunday. Samples and recipes will be available, but admission only is open to the first 100 people to sign up at each demonstration.

This celebration has been in the planning stages for more than six months.

It ties in with League City's efforts to host events that help bring the community together and bring outside visitors to League City, said Kristi Wyatt, League City's director of communications.

"We're very excited about having an event of interest to the city that spotlights local wineries and artists," Wyatt said. "We're excited to bring people here to show them what a great city League City is.

"This will be different than the typical wine festival. You can really make it your own."

Until March 21, League City Uncorked tickets will cost $20 for general admission, $15 for adults age 66 and older, $30 for weekend passes and $100 for VIP admission.

Advance tickets are available at www.leaguecityuncorked.com and www.extremetix.com.

They also can be purchased at South Shore Harbor, 2500 South Shore Blvd.; Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 E. Main St.; and Bacchus Wine Bar, 601 E. Main St.

Tickets at the gate will cost $25 for general admission, $15 for senior adults, $40 for weekend passes and $100 for VIP admission.

VIP ticket holders will have access to a Moroccan-themed cigar room and other special privileges.

Event parking is free and will be available in the field by the park's north entrance.
