I have been given the privilege of a pre-release copy of the new EP by Welshpool based Indie-Rock band Colour Sunday. When I was informed that the record had been produced by Gavin Monaghan, who has also worked with the likes of ‘King’s of Leon’ and ‘The Twang’, it only added to my excitement. The boys have been putting videos and teaser clips of the songs on their Facebook and Myspace pages over the past month or so to help raise the profile and I must say, for those avid ‘CS’ fans out there, it has been worth the wait and most certainly lives up to expectations.

The title track to the EP ‘Create the Space’ opens with a lively drum introduction, and drops immediately to subtle guitar work, the verses are bass [Ben Picken] and drum [Aled Lloyd] driven, with a catchy vocal melody provided by Rob Picken (also playing guitar) and Tom Carter. The chorus is huge, filled with ‘whoa's’ and ‘ah's’ that makes you sit up and take notice. Just as the song feels as if it can offer no more, a change in tempo and direction takes you into a ‘middle-8’ section that is as good as it is unexpected. Track two is "Tonight…We dance!" This is surely single material. The lyrics talk of long shifts and deadlines in the workplace, summing-up "that Friday feeling" perfectly. A house-dance section in the middle of the track paints a picture of the lads enjoying a night out on a weekend, once again not something expected from a predominantly guitar-based band but very affective and really adds another dimension to the track. The third song, in my opinion shows real song-writing talent, "You will never know" is a huge piano/rock ballad that shows off the band's ability to write beautiful harmonies and lyrics. The chorus soars, with a stunning vocal performance by Tom, whilst the verses are kept low and neat with cleverly written lyrics by Rob. The phone call effect in the middle of the song is very 'tongue in cheek' but works well. Definitely a song that could easily feature on a big-budget movie soundtrack.

'Armour' completes the record by offering an aggressive, but emotional take on the end of a relationship. An up-beat and alert verse is the main appeal to this song, with lines split perfectly between the two vocalists. The song drives from start to finish with only a slight breather mid-way through. An ideal end to the EP that leaves you wanting more. I am already looking forward to a full studio album for these boys and would be greatly surprised if they don’t make it big soon! A real local gem of a band which I insist you go and see whenever you can! The whole EP oozes class with a real Foo-Fighters / Kings of Leon vibe whilst managing to be very distinctive and original. A definite purchase for any Indie / Rock / Pop fan.
