Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Colyer is ready to unleash his debut single "Out for You," and Exclaim! has got the exclusive premiere.
Born Steven Colyer, the songwriter is now going solely by his surname; he was born in the South, raised in the Midwest, and is currently based out of Los Angeles. Colyer has spent years bringing his experiences together for his upcoming debut release, blending rock'n'roll with R&B grooves into a raw, visceral sound of his own.
"I've kept my writing and recording process solo for a while, now," Colyer said in a statement. "It's the only way I can feel like I'm completely authentic in what I put out. I've spent years working on my sound and it's time now. It's all happening."
You can hear the results on the gritty, blues-infused inaugural single "Out for You." It officially drops tomorrow (August 25), but you can give it an early spin in the player below right now. - Exclaim!
Delivering smooth, silver vocals and a gritty west coast sound, LA newcomer Colyer’s breakout single, “Out For You,” is your new drive ’til the wheels fall off anthem. “There’s something about the way you hang your legs out of that car window,” he sings wildly through a distorter, he voice writhing above classic, thrashing guitars.
The music video channels this same cinematic nostalgia, packaging Colyer’s lyrics into a visual that feels like slipping into a forgotten film where the plot centers on a couple who’s loaded up their vintage two-door to embark on the road trip of their life.
“After I had an expected rough first year in LA, I met a beautiful soul named Naomi,” Colyer said. “We’d go on spontaneous road trips and she’d bring her camera. We’d head toward the ocean or the desert and just stop along the way. The film, which she directed, doesn’t just reflect that, it ‘is’ that. Everyone has a story and this is ours.” - Bullett Media
Born in the South, raised in the Midwest and currently based in Los Angeles, Steven Colyer is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who writes, records and performs under the mononym Colyer. His debut single “Out For You” reveals a sound that’s both contemporary and timeless as it seamlessly meshes dirty, gritty, boogie blues, soul, R&B, pop, and swaggering hip-hop that equally channels George Thorogood, The Black Keys, Metal Moon-era Dirty Ghosts and about half-a-dozen contemporary male pop stars. Simply put, it’s arena-friendly, populist-leaning rock with an infectious, larger-than-life hook. And just from this song, I expect that the blogosphere — and of course, you — will be hearing from this man, as a debut release is forthcoming. - Joy of Violent Movement
