"Common Thrill's "textural brilliance", by the Noise."

Common Thrill 6 songs
More apparent in these songs than on their first demo CD a few years back, is that vocalist John Courduvelis is the illegitimate bastard lovechild of jim Morrison and Jeff Buckley. Common Thrill have
had their fair share of lineup changes, but this EP proves that those changes were definitely for the better. There are moments of this disc that recall the textural brilliance of 10cc circa 1976 ("I'm Not in Love"). Very few bands can be rootsy ("Whiskey Glow") and atmospheric ("Morphine Drip") in the way that this band is. While their influences may be easy to spot by the more cynical, Common Thrill doesn't sound like anyone, or perhaps they sound like a lot of different things, but filtered very well. It is a shame that two of these tracks are hidden as they are pretty cool, though not as meticulously produced. commonthrill.net

"Interview of Common Thrill by Overplay.com"

Who are COMMON THRILL and how would you describe your music?

Neil: Common Thrill is a 5 member rock band from Boston, MA, U.S.A. The band was started by myself, Neil Bowman, and the singer, John Courduvelis, in 2001. Currently, the other members include Rich DeCaprio on guitars, keys, samples, Brian Furlong on guitars, and backing vocals, and Mark Kelley on bass. I'm the drummer. Our music is spacey, beautiful, passionate and rocking.
John: There are heavy guitar layerings and countermelodies, ala Radiohead, and I sort of croon over the songs in a voice that recalls Bryan Ferry, Jeff Buckley, and Muse. I also love Jim Morrison's growl and poetic spoken style as well, so sometimes I employ that.

When were you formed and were you in other bands before?

Neil: We formed in 2001 when John answered my ad in the Boston Phoenix. I loved his voice and style and we built from there.
John: I was briefly in the band Braindance but was mostly writing my own songs with an engineer named Jere Faisen. But I wanted a band that could play my songs and that understood them. Rich was the David Gilmour part in a Pink Floyd tribute band, Eclipse. Brian has led his own band for a few years, singing lead as well, and Mark is a Berklee student who has played with several bands and even toured the U.S. We also wrote much material with Eric Downing, a great singer/guitarist who was in a U2 tribute band called One Tree Hill, as Bono. And our bassist before Mark joined was Dr. William Cohn, a famous heart surgeon who worked as one of the top cardiothorasic surgeons at B'nai Brith Hospital in Boston! He's since had to leave us and move to Texas to head one of their hospital departments. Quite a bizarre line-up for sure!

What would you say would be COMMON THRILL biggest achievement so far?

Rich: By far, working with Radiohead's producer, Jim Warren. He flew over to the U.S. after finishing up as FOH (front of house) sound engineer on their Hail to the Thief tour, just to work with us! That was in March of this year. The fact that he even gave us the time of day still boggles our minds. But he brought that brilliant, anything-goes Radiohead sound and attitude to our music.
Brian: And two of our tunes are doing great on Garageband.com. "Whiskey Glow" is number 25 on their Rock charts as we speak. That's out of 1,400 songs worldwide.
It looks like it's starting to do well on Overplay, in the Top 10!

What are your aims for the future?

John: To expand our audience even more, keep gigging and getting tighter, hopefully selling some of these CD's and getting some airplay and label attention. Actually, we've been solicited by a major major label already, and we're not even sure how they came across us. We assume it's because of "Whiskey Glow" charting so high on Garageband.com. It became a Song of the Day the first week we posted it. But, we'll proceed cautiously.
Neil: Jesus, it sounds like we're boasting a lot! We're not, we're more stunned and speechless about some of this stuff than anything. You know how it is, when you wish for stuff it never happens!

Your favourite music album/influences?

John: The first Doors album. Jeff Buckley, Bono, Jimmy Gnecco.
Rich: Pink Floyd - Meddle. Radiohead, David Gilmour. I'm a big Jonny Greenwood tech-head.
Mark: Rich here got to play on Jonny Greenwood's guitar on our CD! The engineer, Matthew Ellard, had bought the guitar years ago from Jonny, and when he found out Jim Warren was producing it, he got the guitar out and asked Rich if he wanted to pay it on 'Whiskey Glow'. So if it sounds a LOT like Jonny, it's because it was his guitar and Jim Warren, Jonny's soundman, producing us! Well, I'd really have to say Radiohead "OK Computer" as my favorite. Everyone is my influence.
Brian: Jeff Buckley - Grace. David Gilmour, Jimmy Page.
Neil: U2 - The Unforgettable Fire. Radiohead, XTC, Roxy Music, Buckley, U2, tons of them. Interpol and Coldplay more recently.

Last album you bought?

John: Shawn Mullins - Beneath the Velvet Sun.
Rich: Radiohead - Comlag.
Mark: Trixie and the Merchgirls - Dazzle and Flash.
Brian: Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane.
Neil: The Libertines - Up the Bracket.

Favourite all-time film and book and why?

John: "Betty Blue", and 'Grendel'. Sublime, both are magical.
Rich: Radiohead's "Meeting People Is Easy". I could watch that a million times. I probably have. Book would be "Where the Red Fern Grows".
Mark: "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", and the book would be "Trout Fishing in America" by Richard Brodigan.
Brian: "Donnie Darko", and "Ghost Rider" by Neil Peart. 'Ghost Rider' because it's fascinating and strikes a chord in me about how to deal with loss and getting back on track. And "Donnie" just because it blurs the line and there's no film like it.
Neil: I don't have a favorite book. I just finished "Live from New York", about the history and cast of Saturday Night Live. - www.overplay.com

bar band greatness!
now this is swimming in bar band swagger! straight ahead solid rock and roll with bluesy overtones.the guitar lead has got a stevie ray vaughn feel to it.i cant seem to think of who this reminds me of.solid performance by all the instruments.this makes me want to head out to the bar for a nite of drinkin and rockin!

Love it...
... and I don't even usually listen to this sort of cross-over-southern-style rock. More proof that not everything sucks on garageband.com (although there are an awful lot of dogs, you have to admit). The mood is great. Some talented-ass musicians right here. The melodoes and the guitar chords doing that cross-note shit - very impressive. This is pro-level stuff in my opinion. Fucking great! Good luck with the dream, you guys - you deserve it!

a cool song
I can see why people would like this song, beccause it's original and interesting. the hook line is really there for high commerial appeal i think, but it would definatly sound good live, i think your on the right track definatly a cool song

very good i love it... that's the pure roots sounds i like to hear it makes think about the doors and that's more than a compliment coming from me. Nothing to change, hang on there...

Western style
I like the guitar riffs, very cathing western style!
The mood I can't follow, it seems like there's no story it the vocal, I can't read his feelings in the voice!
I think that the band sounds a little like a danish band called DAD.

Free flowing rock bliss..
This song has that real rock charm that stems from performers the likes of tom petty, the doors and stevie ray vaughn. There is a nice story to the song that draws the listener in. Kudos to the songwriter here, overall band effort is solid and produces a good distinct atmosphere. Excellent effort.

This song isn`t bad as far as beat and melody. I think the lyrics are pretty cool. The only thing that was hard to swallow, was when the singer was just talking.

Wicked.
This is very unoriginal. I guess the lyrics is what the band focusses on - and they are good. But the music is not great. The singer can sing, but seldom show it. Good melody in chorus though.

Jim Morisson is still alive!!!
This is the stuff I like. Great song. I would definitely buy it. Great guitar parts ... esp. this scratching stuff! The voice is .... nothing to add. Though I feel that you break the "doors-style" in the refrain. Keep up that work. This is the first song I rate a 5! It reminds me a bit of Tito & Tarantula too.
...it's great!

Right on Johnny Cash!
The guitars are definately hitting. Just the right amount and not blocking out the vocalist.
The mood is pretty interesting. I kind of got the feeling like this song should be used in one of those Lost Boys, Near Dark - www.garageband.com

Morphine Drip
Band: Common Thrill
Genre: Alternative

Dark Shadows
From the deep dark mystery synth, this audio dreamscape lays out an ethereal field of flowers, and provides the vocal partner to float slow-motion through the flowers. There is a trip in store for all who drift the distance and experience the musical ecstasy.

What a masterpiece of passion!
- Film_Director from Portland, Oregon on 30Jul2004 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dreamy and trance like
An interesting sound that reminds me of Jeff Buckley.

The song builds up well and keeps you interested all the way to the end. The contract between the chorus and verses is also song adding to the effect of the song.

I had troubles focusing on the lyrics as I found the rest of the production distracting me too much. Having said that I loved the vocals, but have little to say about the lyrics as you requested.

All in all one of the best songs I have come across on GarageBand.com
- StudioEd from Perth, Western Australia, Australia on 24Aug2004 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Press play (again and again)
Wow! The somewhat androgenous vocals are worth waiting for. I was just thinking how the start was somewhat similar to Dark side of the Moon by Pink Floyd through a glass darkly and then I get blown away.
The reference to PF is probably the use of open space in the song (nice)! and the reverb permeating the instruments. The vocals, which also drop down to a voice similar to Bono's in some ways) are a great compliment to the music (and vice versa).
An intelligent song which has its own internal dynamics. It's over! That can't be 5 minutes!!! Top marks from me! PRESSES THE START BUTTON AGAIN!

What a beautiful trance I fell into when the musical intro got underway... and how delighted I was when the vocals started and melded so well with the mood and instrumentation... really pretty sounds. Enjoyed the ride.

Soothing and Melodic.
At first I didn't think I'd like this song. But I gave it a chance and actually trully enjoyed the song. I actually find the song rather soothing.
First off, you remind me of a band called Red House Painters. If you haven't heard of them try downloading a song named Katy Song. I think you'll enjoy it a lot.
Second, I love that background noise/affect. Without a doubt the best part. Your mixing job seems to be quite spectacular. I think I might find it hard giving you ideas on what to change.
As far as I can pass on to you is the following. I don't really see much in my opinion to change with this song. What I would do however is have a careful choice regarding your stable of other songs. Most people aren't going to want to hear many songs like that. It will be too repetitive and too much of the same thing is never good.
Good Luck, and I wait with anticipation until I might download this mp3.

Very nice lush, dramatic piece with thick int..
Lush synth/piano intro -- perfect nod song for the Rush/oxy set (morphine drips down, in the first phrase).

Dramatic falsetto vocals with guts. Very nice feedbacky/distorted guitar gives it even more heart.

Strains of American Music Club here. I would run your next lyrics through the mill a little more.

Discography

"Common Thrill" produced by Jim Warren (Radiohead). The CD was released April 30, 2005. Thrill is currently being featured by Clear Channel radio station websites (over 144 nationwide) through December 2005, during their Discover New Music promotion that highlights the hottest unsigned bands. Common Thrill were chosen by Garageband.com to be promoted by Clear Channel because they were the one of the most highly rated and charting bands on the website. "Whiskey Glow", produced by Warren, was featured on the PBS series, "Road Trip Nation 2005". It reached #3 on the Rock charts on Garageband.com, and was awarded both Song of the Day (TWICE!) and Track of the Week on GB.com. 'Morphine Drip' is being featured by the legendary Boston radio station, WFNX, one of the very first Alternative rock stations in the country. 'Morphine Drip' also was Track of the Day twice and Track of the Week on Garageband.com.
An early EP,"may", was released in Aug. 2000 and resoundingly hailed by the Boston Globe.

Bio

Common Thrill creates intense musical moments that carry many emotions; anger, joy, sadness, confusion, etc.
They are influenced by Pink Floyd, Radiohead, the Doves, Snow Patrol, Interpol, Muse, Jeff Buckley and U2. In fact, Common Thrill just worked with Radiohead's producer/live soundman, Jim Warren ("The Bends", "I Might Be Wrong"), finishing a six-song EP in Spring 2005. They are the rare rock band that can put you in a beautiful dream state ('Morhpine Drip') or rock you where you stand ('Whiskey Glow', 'Like It Is'). Singer John Courduvelis sings beautifully and with passion over the blending, whirling guitars of Rich DeCaprio and Brian Fernald, and the sexy grooves of drummer/co-founder (with Courduvelis) Neil Bowman and bassist Mark Kelley. Very few bands can write great songs in many moods and genres that don't sound all the same. They are a common thrill to those who let music speak to them.
