"A Satisfyingly Dark Take on Shoegaze..."

New London band Concubines bring together a massive range of influences from Toro y Moi to Talking Heads and mix it into one satisfyingly dark take on the shoegaze sound, ‘Darkness’ is an especially good indication of this mash of sounds, starting with a simple guitar line which transforms into a synth laden ritual chant of a chorus. Being played by John Kennedy on Xfm is always a good indication you’re doing things right and Concubines certainly seem to be. - Shinyshinynew Blog

""Hits From the Box; Brooding Synth Swathed Number Grabbing Elements of Bowie""

Concubines is a one-man indie band that straddles the pop spectrum of the past 30 years. In late 2010, having spent the past four years touring and sleeping in the back of a beaten up old van, the last other founding member of Andy Death's (AD) then noise rock band, Ono Palindromes quit. With the only seeming option being to begin searching for another new member to join the fold, AD retreated into the converse worlds of pop and experimental music. The result? 'Darkness', which is a brooding synth-swathed number that grabs elements of Gary Numan, New Romantic pop, and David Bowie. AD is now penning more material with recording due to take place in late February, with an initial EP release pencilled in for May 2011. AD is currently in the process of recruiting members to bring Concubines to life in a more intuitive/ natural way befitting a live show. - Sonic Masala Blog

Bio

Formed in 2011. Concubines is the brainchild of Andy D. The band is essentially a real life attempt to flesh out the term "hypnagogic pop". Influences are varied between songs producing an eclectic live show with a party atmosphere. These influences include; Talking Heads, Toro Y Moi, De La Soul, Hype Williams, the Velvet Underground, Salem, Scott Walker...

Concubines first set of live shows are currently being booked, but already include slots supporting John Peel faves the Nightingales, Thomas Tantrum and shows for indie blog Gold Flake Paint...

Live the band use stunning visuals and mix traditional instrumentation (guitars, bass, drums) with more electronic sampling and synth equipment (mpc 500, roland groovebox, microkorg, drum machines and triggers).

Andy D recruited friends, Sol, Serge, and Andy W to complete the line up- between them the band have played over a thousand gigs and have played in the likes of Load.Click.Shoot! (Vacuous Pop), A Thousand Natural Shocks (PIAS) and Ono Palindromes.

The bands debut EP has been recorded fleshing out their influences and is due for release later in the year...
