Contagious Vibes

Gloria Miller grew up in Chicago, with a musical grounding that
spanned gospel, jazz and r&b. It might come as a surprise therefore
to learn that she is currently based on England’s south coast in the
naval city of Portsmouth.

For this self-penned set, she equips herself with the aid of ten musicians, although they are often used sparingly. Most of the material is in ballad vein, sometimes rather drifting in search of a tune, exampled by the sax-supported ‘Shine’ and the birdsong-intro’d ‘ So Much More’. ‘I’m Not Afraid’ raises the temperature just a tad and things move up a notch further still with ‘You Made Me’, a keyboard and percussion number with a slight Latin rhythm and a high spot of the album.

Given that the record label is called perky, only the ‘Life Lessons’ closer and the opening ‘He’s The One’ fall into that category, whereas tracks two through five are all downtempo, ‘Because Of Your Love’, ‘Your Touch’ and ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ being nice without being special and bettered by ‘Let Go And Let God’, which benefits from a classy cello and piano arrangement."

'Because of Your Love' is an old school soul/blues song, with a lyric all about all the good gifts love can bring to a life. Portsmouth, England UK -- Sep 16, 2010 -- "Let Go" is a musical journey through love, loss and recovery. Gloria is a prolific songwriter, and each song comes from a deeply personal place covering an eclectic range of genres including, Swing Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Latin Jazz, R&B and Blues.

It's been over 10 years since Gloria's last release and this long-awaited album shows her growth as a singer and songwriter. Production began on this project in May, 2009 and consists of 10 original songs. This recording was a collaborative effort with extremely talented musicians whose work has been associated with the likes of Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and Michael Buble.

Highlights include "He's The One" which is a comedic look at how fantasy often gets confused with reality where love is concerned. Then there's the Anita Baker-inspired "Your Touch" that is bound to be a Smooth Jazz favorite. No CD is complete without the proverbial "brag" song and Gloria does this very subtly with "Shine" which includes a play on her nickname.

"I wrote this album on the heels of a devastating breakup and I saw writing it as a chance to pour out everything I was feeling as I travelled the road to healing. Often pain and suffering causes us to grow," Gloria reflects. "Ironically, when I was recording 'Let Go & Let God,' a memoir of the breakup, I had just gotten engaged to the guy who broke my heart and inspired the song. Needless to say, the tears flowed in the studio during the playback … both tears of sadness in remembering and tears of joy in letting go of the past."
