"Boulder is out of Control"

By Chris Clark

Control performs with The Tao Jones at 9 p.m., Thursday, May 10, at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder, 303-443-3399.

Boulder has long been known for its plethora of up-and-coming live bands that call the friendly Front Range home. In years past, the countless collective gravitated towards the crystal-toting twirlers (think String Cheese Incident and bluegrass enthusiasts Yonder Mountain String Band), but today's scene leans more on the live electronic side. While rock acts like Rose Hill Drive and Dinosaur Jr. continue to call the land of Boulderites home, fresh, young acts such as Control and The Tao Jones offer the area a slice of futuristic flavor not commonplace among the area's local bands.

Control is a rather clustered presentation. Their music portrays a combination of modern electronics and live instrumentation meshed together through a unique incorporation of two diverse musical worlds. What results is an experimental brew of sound where technology meets musicianship.

Matthew Stafford, Control's drummer, explains it as, "We get really weird and expand an idea. It lets us experiment by incorporating live instrumentation with electronics. We're doing something that's progressive. Everyone can listen to it their own way and feel the way they want to. It hits each person differently—that's what we strive for."

Tonight, two of the area's most promising young bands come together at the Fox Theatre. With graduation rounding out the weekend, this event offers college kids and the community alike an opportunity to support local music while getting a little sweat on.

Bio

Control is a Colorado based electronica powerhouse. Featuring a triple-threat arsenal of electric guitar, various synthesizers, and an impeccable rhythm section, the band carries a spirit that can bring any audience to their feet. Control’s sound represents an aggressive and raucous throwback to a time when live bands played with ferocity and passion. With perseverance and determination, they have emerged as a force to be reckoned with.
Featuring members from successful Colorado bands such as The Tao Jones, Mumbouli, The Menagerie and Critical Mass, the story begins in 2006 when guitarist Freddie Heis, bassist Sean Mahaffey, and keyboardist Ethan Ice came together with one common interest in music—to create original and modern dance music while incorporating plenty of room for live improvisation, tasteful sampling, and musical experimentation.
They soon connected with drummer and music producer Matthew Stafford through the burgeoning Boulder, CO music scene, giving them a unique perspective to the music and wide array of hip-hop, jazz and electronic beats.
With the addition of Stafford, Control got straight to work, writing new material and touring constantly in the Denver and Boulder area. Countless energetic performances resulted in the creation of the true Control show--combining elements of funk, electronica, and hip-hop with an energetic performance and an edgy punk attitude. In early 2007 the band headed into the studio to begin recording their debut ep “This is Control.” With more plans for future touring and recording, this band has both the talent and energy to take the music world by storm.
The Control sound is pure power electronica. Drawing from a wide variety of influences such as the Greyboy Allstars, Boards of Canada, Bonobo, STS9, DJ Krush, and LTJ Bukem, The band has shared the stage with the likes of Pnuma, MFA, Perpetual Groove, Prism, DJ Chordata and Sacred Science. Control’s thunderous brand of electronic music is sure to have the world taking note, and with plans in place for a future release of their album, it won’t be long before the music scene catches on.
