"Hair In My Eyes Like a Highland Steer"

"When you think of cowboy's and rodeos, images of Texas and the Southwest usually come to mind. But, they also do those things up in Alberta, in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. In many ways, the kind of music they like is American as you can get--North American, that is. Enter Corb Lund, a fellow who uses the roots of country and instincts of the folksy storyteller to create down-to-earth, entertaining music." - Radio and Records

"October 2006 "Best Of" Edition"

“.. the coolest cowboy to drift down from the Great White North for a good, long time… album of the year. No wonder, Lund writes of the homeland... and ranching life he knows insie-out with a dry, droll wit and music that has, to paraphrase his album’s irresistible title cut, spring in its step like a whitetailed deer...” - Nashville Scene

"Hair In My Eyes Like a Highland Steer"

“Corb Lund arrives with a disc hailed as Album of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association. The land figures prominently in Lund's songs, and his vivid evocations of man in and against nature, along with his character-driven stories, evoke the Texas singer-songwriter tradition -- or suggest a new tradition based further north. With a history in farming, ranching, and rodeo, Lund comes by his artistic conceit honestly. Like George Strait, he is a credible cowpoke who lets the life into his music. Strait is an interpreter, not a writer, but he would surely appreciate and recognize the calamity memorialized in Lund's sprightly, wry talking blues.” - BN.com

"Hair In My Eyes Like a Highland Steer"

“Corb Lund's Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer (Stony Plain, 1309) features everything you'd expect from this Western Canadian Roots music staple: elements of Texas & Western swing, Talking Blues, bits of Southern Rock, Country wisdom and cheeky humor. The well-played music focuses on familiar themes of trucks & truckin', love, rodeos and home on the range -- all of which I'm sure translates very well at his many, many live performances to packed rooms.” - AmericanaRoots.com

Bio

"Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer" runs the gamut of roots music forms and flavours, from western swing to Waylon-esque country rock to ragtime to acoustic blues. The album continues in the vein of the band's previous release "Five Dollar Bill" by combining traditional western and acoustic stylings with incisive lyrics in an 'innovatively traditional' style. The album is in part upbeat and fun ("Hurtin' Albertan", "The Truck Got Stuck"), wistful and moving ("The Rodeo's Over", "The Truth Comes Out") and outspokenly dissident ("Counterfeiters' Blues"). The lyrical content of his new work continues to reflect Lund's unique life experience, blending a Western upbringing with a decade on the indie rock scene with his previous group, the smalls.

"Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer" features 13 songs written by Corb Lund and includes guest vocal performances by Western icon Ian Tyson and living folk legend Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The album also showcases performances by producer Harry Stinson, steel player Scotty Sanders (Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson), guitarist Kenny Vaughn (Lucinda Williams, Marty Stuart), fiddlers Stuart Duncan (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and Tammy Rogers (Dead Reckoners, Reba McEntire), Gordon Mote (Porter Wagoner) and master yodellers Ranger Doug and Too Slim. Also prominently featured on all tracks are the members of Lund's longtime touring band, "The Hurtin' Albertans" - Kurt Ciesla (bass), Brady Valgardson (drums) and Grant Siemens (guitars, etc).
