""No Rules Just Code EP" Review"

C-Mo Dough captures the heart of the Triple D Struggle. The emcee that spent portions of his adult life behind prison walls prides himself on creating liberating music. As far as inspiration goes, C-Mo looks no further than his own life and struggles. His first EP, No Rules Just Code, is a manifestation of his life. It shows a man who went from convict to boss all due to penmanship. Following in line with Southern greats, Correct demonstrates a lyricism that is rooted in the Texas Lifestyle. As Southern hip hop hot beds like Houston, and New Orleans have captured the hearts of hip hop, C-Mo Dough carries Dallas on his back while honoring those who paved the way. His versatility on the microphone is as evident as his passion for his music. His raw stripped down bars are reminiscent of the late Swishahouse roster that brought us the likes of Slim Thug. While his music is accessible, his lyrical abilities shouldn’t be questioned. He cleverly depicts the nature of The Dallas Lifestyle without ever coming across as the average run of the mill park bench spitter. He raps unabashedly about attaining the spoils of life, by any means necessary and judging from his past he has every right to obtain them. While hip hop purists look for the next game changer, Correct reminds us all of why hip hop is the voice of the oppressed. His ability to craft sincere narratives is the type of content that separates him from his peers. The young Dallas emcee, is all heart, all grit, with an undeniable hunger to be great. It’s a formula that has been tested and street approved by the legends that came before him.
No Rules Just Code is C-Mo Dough’s first official release. The EP clocks in at six tracks, but possesses enough attitude to sit in your CD player for months to come. C-Mo Dough shows a rare versatility that has stereotypically avoided Southern rappers. His ability to jump from a flawless smooth flow, to a Chamillionare like double time flow, brings an added element that most new rappers sadly miss.Tracks like,“Swang” demonstrate this point beautifully. In just 20 some minutes of music, C-Mo Dough stakes his claim in multiple scenes.“Anythang” could be an anthem for anyone ranging from your neighborhood hustler, to your 9-5er trying to support his family. “We on Course” sounds like a track that Mobb Deep would have made in the late 90’s. Throw in a healthy dose of wordplay such as,“If your money’s right I can fill your prescription/but I’m not trying to take the fall like Michael Jackson’s physician” highlight the rappers flexibility. C-Mo Dough’s music clearly has the personality to go alongside the artists technical abilities, the result could easily be an impact on the radio.
Luckily, No Rules just Code’s production remains on par with the emcees ability. “Swang’s” melodic horns mesh perfectly with the tracks southern feel. It’s the albums breakout hit that has the potential of exiting car windows for summers to come.Throughout No Rules Just Code C-Mo Dough balances his commercial appeal with artistic credibility. Even on catchy tracks like “So Presidential” the artist known as Correct demonstrates solid penmanship to go along side his verbal skill set. It’s a tough line to balance and while he doesn’t do it flawlessly, he does it extremely well. The result of this balancing act is exemplified on the EP’s final track,“We Gon See.” C-Mo reflects about life over a stripped down track that features a haunting guitar. When he spits,“I got a fist full of money and a heart full of hope” you can’t help but root for the man. Canibus once rapped, “I’d rather be a lion for a day than be lamb who lives forever” On No Rules Just Code, C-Mo Dough attacks the microphone as if there is no tomorrow. While it remains to be seen if the young Dallas born emcee can sustain the quality and energy over a full length project, No Rules Just Code at least gives C-Mo Dough the opportunity to prove that he can. - Luke Gibson, HipHopDX.com

"Cut From A Different Cloth"

C-Mo Dough is a New York native who came of age in Dallas. On the surface that really shouldn't matter, but it does. It affects everything from his diction to his preference in production to his subject matter on his debut release Cut From A Different Cloth. The album is a Long Island Iced Tea of all the necessary elements to produce a hot rap album: blend money, sex, guns, betrayal, hot beats, and a sense of style and then shake. The difference in the libation he mixes is that it's served with an extra shot of lyrical dexterity.
The album opens with his freestyling testament to the world, declaring what exactly he (and this album) is about. It coasts along an ominous-sounding melody, with stop-start punches at the hook. It's not a powerhouse opening, but it's assertive enough to keep listeners' attention before rolling into the dirty south marriage of trumpets and drum-machine syncopation of "Swang." He's joined by DuReel Fresh and Sean Shyst on the track, but C-Mo is clearly the star of the song--his witty, rapid-fire flow rides the track with a cocky surety.
On “Hope to See Anotha Day,” his style pendulum swings to the south side. The drawl comes out, the slang changes, the swag changes, and the sound rides very dirty (south). You almost wouldn't know it was C-Mo if you didn't pay attention to his intonation.
“I'm Gonna Go” takes listeners straight to New York. The production is DJ Premier-inspired, the spitting is Queensbridge fresh. You can almost picture him with a backpack on, performing this rhyme in a cipher. The fact that he experiments with different styles isn't bad more than it's just interesting. It's reflective of his upbringing, and an unwillingness to be boxed in or pledge allegiance to one region.
Overall, Cut From a Different Cloth is a solid debut. “Eye Candy” and “Kut 4 Free” dilute the album, but standout work like “SuperION,” “Bouncin',” and “Thanks To All Da Hustlaz” help fortify the album and demonstrate C-Mo's real talent as a lyricist. - Quia Querisma of Dallas Observer
