Bio

Correspondence is the alter ego of Samuel Wilson, an American singer, songwriter, and rapper originally from Charleston, South Carolina, in the USA. His musical style is a dynamic mixture of hip-hop, soul, jazz and funk and is heavily influenced by hip hop artists like Outkast and Cee-Lo. As a child, he played the piano and developed a love for different musical genres including hip-hop, old-school soul (Motown era), and reggae. As a songwriter, he has incorporated other musical genres like blues, spoken word and poetry, electronic, and jazz.

Samuel’s journey as a songwriter started after he survived a serious car accident in 2002 and began writing song lyrics and poetry while recovering from near-fatal injuries. During his rehabilitation from the accident, he was studying and living in France, where he met some Dutch musical contacts. Over the next few years, he frequently traveled to the Netherlands to write songs and record music.

Since 2008, Correspondence has actively recorded and performed in the Netherlands and recently completed his debut album entitled “Correspondence Music Volume I”. The album is a melodic mix of soul, funk, and hip hop and combines the intelligent songwriting of Correspondence and the musical contributions of Dutch artists including Ivar Vermeulen, Merlijn Verboom, Wim de Jong, and Michael Rorby. “Correspondence Music Volume I” was released on Zip Records in August 2011. The lead single, “Background”, was released to Dutch radio in June 2011.

The energetic sounds of Correspondence’s debut album carry over to his live show, where he again joins forces with Ivar Vermeulen on bass guitar, Merlijn Verboom on lead guitar, Michael Rorby on keyboards and trombone, and drummer Marshall Curtly. His band is currently touring in the Netherlands and was featured at the 2011 Uitmarkt Festival for an album release concert.
