"Award winner - November 27, 2023"

Cory Coons brings home ‘Best Rock Song’ award for ‘Long Hard Rain’ at the 2023 Josie Music Awards in Tennessee. “I think I’m still processing it” Cory said as he recounted receiving the award on the stage of The Grand Ole’ Opry. “I think I was waiting for my name but they said the song first, and my daughter lit up. Took me a second, oh that’s me.” A surreal experience in totality, it is obvious that Cory was moved by the experience although still passing off the success to all the musicians he’s worked with and inspired by. - Seaway News - By Paula Labonté

"South Mountain musician wins Josie Music Award for Song of the Year (Rock)"

Family and music are centre stage for Cory M. Coons. The South Mountain musician got to celebrate both at this year’s Josie Music Awards (JMA), where he won Song of the Year (Rock) for his single called “Long Hard Rain.” He attended the ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville with his wife, Leighann Coons, and daughter, Charleigh Coons.

“I never expect to win and when you do it’s almost surreal,” said Coons, who has been nominated for the JMA in different categories for the past four years. “We’re sitting there and I didn’t even catch on at first that it was me.”

He explained that Charleigh knew right away when the song name was announced: “I was kind of blank for a second and then, oh right, that’s my song.”

“She was super excited,” Coons continued. “My wife said the look on her face was priceless. And she was like, 'Dad, we won!' It was very sweet and we had a great time when we were down there.”

He noted that it was “very cool” to stand in the iconic circle and accept an award.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever been on that stage or in that building and I’m getting an award in the circle — pretty crazy,” added Coons.

He worked on “Long Hard Rain” with two of his bandmates: Marc Muir and Kevin Eamon, of Cory M. Coons and the Dirt Road Gypsys. The track can be found on his latest album titled “Across the Great Divide.”

“I’m pretty proud of that CD and to have that single win Rock Song of the Year is just an amazing feeling.”

The JMA, which is considered the most prestigious awards in the independent music industry, saw over 59,000 submissions this year.

“Just to be in the one to two per cent of nominees was phenomenal to me,” Coons commented. “It’s so nice to be involved with all the independent artists from everywhere — all around the world.”

He referred to the experience as humbling: “We don’t do it for the awards — we do it to reach people with the music. That’s what it’s all about as a songwriter.”

Coons first picked up a bass guitar at the age of 13 and discovered a “passion” that would span over 30 years and counting.

“It’s a big part of my life,” he said. “My slogan is family and music are centre stage. Music is a big part of it, but family is an even bigger part of it.”

He called the award “another stepping-stone” in his musical journey that made him “feel honoured to be respected within the independent music community.”

Coons also won an award at the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2014. The Producers Choice Honour was in recognition of his EP called “Share A Little Time.”

“I want to thank everybody who has followed, supported and paid attention,” he stated. “It means a lot. As a struggling musician, when you start out, you don’t know where things are going to go, and you just keeping doing it if you’re committed, and I guess I have been.”

"Cory M. Coons receives award in Nashville By Brandon Mayer -November 2, 2023"

The tunes of South Mountain musician Cory M. Coons are known for delighting ears all over the world, but it was just last month at the famous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville that Cory was given a significant honour, and one that would make even the most famous of musicians glow.

At the annual Josie Awards ceremony, presented at the Grand Ole Opry, Cory’s song “Long Hard Rain” was awarded Song of the Year in the Rock category.

Cory lives on a farm that once belonged to his grandparents on Pleasant Valley Road, just south of South Mountain. He has been local to South Mountain most of his life, and is now a third generation resident who is proud to still call the community home. He also teaches guitar lessons at Kevin Eamon’s music school called “Rock My House” on South Gower Drive in North Grenville, in addition to other private teaching.

“My greatest accomplishment would have to be my family life with my wife and daughter,” Cory told the Times. “I always say, ‘Music and family are centre stage!’ They go hand in hand in my life.”

Musical accomplishments come in as a close second for Cory, with the most recent award for “Long Hard Rain” being “up there”, Cory said.

“Since it was held at the Grand Ole Opry House, I received the honour and accepted it in “the circle” right on the Opry Stage! What a thrill!” added Cory. He had previously won Producer’s Choice Honors in Los Angeles at the former Los Angeles Music Awards.

Cory first became involved with music as a bass player when he was just 13. He performed in high school bands at Christmas assemblies and talent shows, and began creating his own songs and writing lyrics early on. “I have travelled and toured in Ontario, and across the southeastern US in the late 1990s in different bands,” said Cory. “Then I released my first CD in 1999 under the band name “Tycoons”, and my first solo album in 2004. I have continued to pursue music and release albums and EPs since then, and have had the opportunity to work with many different professional studio musicians and record producers in various locations in both the US and Canada over the years.”

As with all artists, Cory’s success is not about luck, it’s about hard work and determination, combined with a healthy amount of musical instinct, of course. “I have been very fortunate, but I have also worked very hard in the independent music industry for over 30 plus years,” Cory added. He recently released a compilation album of most of his singles and some other album tracks from the past 10 years on a new album called “Across The Great Divide” (Singles and Album Cuts 2012-2022).

Have there been challenges along the way? Of course! Money is always a challenge in the arts, and having the proper budget to do recording projects, etc. can always be a sticking point. Cory promotes the value of working with the right people who are in it for the right reasons, and the local area has delivered wonderfully in that department.

When asked how it feels to win such a prestigious award, Cory didn’t hesitate to share his excitement. “It feels wonderful to win a Josie Music Award!” said Cory. “It is a fantastic event with amazing independent artists from all over the world who come to attend! I have been nominated a few times in other categories over the years, but this year was extra special to win and to accept the award at the famous Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville with my family in attendance!” Cory was also thrilled to be in “Studio A” of the Opry for the pre-party gala, where the show “Hee-Haw” used to be filmed. Cory watched the show as a child, and being there gave him memories to last a lifetime.

Last month was not Cory’s first time in Nashville, and it almost certainly won’t be his last. He hopes to continue writing and recording new material in the near future for release. He also still performs live locally in the area and out of town. “I am always looking to expand my horizons in new venues or festivals and events as well, and I want to thank all my friends and fans for their amazing ongoing support over the many years of my career,” Cory added. “It means the world to me, and I am truly blessed and grateful for everything!”

"[Music Review] I Saw Mommy Kissin’ Santa Claus – Cory M. Coons"

[Music Review] I Saw Mommy Kissin’ Santa Claus – Cory M. Coons

Just in time for the holiday season Cory M. Coons releases his rendition of a classic Christmas am; I Saw Mommy Kissin’ Santa Claus. This upbeat Country rocker is fun, energetic, and vibrant, perfect to get us in the mood for holiday cheer.

Featuring his daughter Charleigh Lynn Coons, the finale of this track steps back the tempo and offers a child’s perspective as she sings the main theme of the track. Adding the child singing the main verse at the end just works so well as the music from the rapidly strummed acoustic guitar reaches a tension level that seems to not be able to be released.

As Cory M. Coons abruptly drops out allowing the young girl to sing the song feels like it has reached a very satisfying conclusion, along with a very pleasant feeling to carry on afterwards. Coons’ vocals on this track are very clear as each phrase and stanza are shaped well, his voice almost forcing a smile on the listeners faces as some invisible force brings happiness to all that listen to this track.

As he poses the question of what would Daddy say if he walked in on them, even though we know Dad is in the suit, we get a hint of taboo and naughtiness in the undertones of his voice. This is clever as it really adds to the entertainment of this classic track.

I Saw Mommy Kissin’ Santa Claus just gets us in the mood for Christmas; the presents, the tree, and the magic of Santa are all encapsulated within this track. This version of a traditional pop hit would serve well on any Adult Contemporary, Country, Pop, and Soft Rock commercial radio first this holiday season, and one we can revisit every year hereafter. The production on this track makes it perfect for radio, as the vocals in contrast with the guitar are well separated allowing all the overtones of both lyric and string to be heard crisp and clear, all while being blended perfectly to give a fullness to the overall sound. A staple of pop holiday music I Saw Mommy Kissin’ Santa Claus is a favorite among many, and this version is right up there as one
the best versions I have ever heard. Cory M. Coons brings fun, warmth, and happiness to the approaching holiday season. A very enjoyable track, and not the last time I will listen to it this season.

"New Single From Cory M. Coons “Long Hard Rain”"

Sometimes it is very refreshing to know that good old-fashioned Rock N’ Roll still has a place in the indie music scene. Guitarist, songwriter, and troubadour Cory M. Coons proves the rock vibe is still alive on his latest release Long Hard Rain. At the surface this track channels a Heartland rock with a heavy Country influence, reminding me of classic Seger, Earle, and Springsteen yet under this lies a musical mixture of intricate harmonies and subtle but highly effective guitar work. Long Hard Rain features a dynamic vocal performance that spans multiple keys encapsulating the overtones of the steel guitar creating full and interesting harmonies. It is that roots rock feel, that slow blues, however, that keeps the momentum as the guitar explores the many different concepts allowed by the vocals as each cadence creates unique tension while resolving back to that comfortable space which makes audiences relate to the subject matter of the lyrics. In regards to the lyrical content, Cory paints grim imagery of hard times as he casts the metaphor of the stormy emotional ride we all take during our darkest times, yet presents a reactionary vision throughout his coda of better times ahead. This stark subject matter being shaped as a visionary piece uplifts the listener and makes Long Hard Rain very replayable. As Cory signs primarily is a bright major key the juxtaposition to the subject matter challenges his audiences yet makes the experience enjoyable.

The guitar work on Long Hard Rain is the primary sound that captures the attention of the listener, yet not enough can be said of how the vocals are mixed very well into the dynamic range of the underlying chordal tones. This polyphony fills the listening space in a way that suggests a full band is accompanying him. The back line in perspective is incredibly tight. The underlying groove and funk keep this track moving forward, as the clever walking bass suggests the journey will come full circle as the lyrical structure guides us around this theme. Long Hard Rain would fit in perfectly in any Adult Contemporary, Rock, Country, or Middle-Of-The-Road commercial radio playlist. The clever hooks, and catchy rhythms elicit a movement response from the listener and the previously mentioned replayability of the track will ensure success on radio. I really enjoyed Long Hard Rain, and as a fan of this style of songwriting am left feeling refreshed and excited for the next release. - Skope Magazine

Cory M. Coons is a veteran independent performer, musician and award-winning songwriter. The acclaimed musician boasts over 30 years of performing and working in music and his array of contributions have been recognized by music fans and industry professionals alike.

As a Roots-Rock/Americana blend of singer-songwriter, Cory has amassed significant support on the major digital streaming platforms for his melodic brand of roots-flavored rock. His catalog consists of several critically-acclaimed full length albums and EPs, as well as a handful of well-received singles.

In addition, his work with famed legendary record producer Ron Nevison, has earned him industry recognition from the Los Angeles Music Awards, the Producer’s Choice Honors, The Josie Music Awards, International Singer-Songwriter Association and the Radio Music Awards, among others.

Cory has added another spectacular song and composition to his thriving discography with his latest single ‘Freedom Road” which was released October 1 via MTS Management Group / MTS Records.

Cory M. Coons
Cory explains the concept behind the song, I feel the song talks about never taking freedom and the simple things in life for granted in these current difficult times we are faced with.

He explains further, It doesn’t come without a cost… I think it portrays the fact that there’s a lot of built up frustration, anger and confusion in the world right now, and sometimes we must brave the storm on our own, while standing up for our beliefs and speaking our own truth. It’s also a little about a loss of innocence, and finding that common ground with the “common man”, and asking God for strength and healing from above on our journey of faith on this current path.”

The thing that strikes you when you listen to “Freedom Road” is how pensive, reflective and personal it is as you absorb the thought provoking lyrics. Cory does an outstanding job lyrically of writing a song that muses on a variety of relatable topics such as core values, faith, principles and truly appreciating the freedoms we enjoy….also standing up for those freedoms when they’re challenged.

Freedom, it don’t come without a cost

And all the simple things just wind up getting lost

In those forgotten days of innocence and youth

When we used to speak our hearts and hear God’s truth

Excerpt from verse of “Freedom Road”
One can pick up on a number of gems and words of wisdom as you make your way through this track. The sincerity in Cory’s vocal performance goes a long way in masterfully conveying the crux of the song.

I also find it impressive that even though “Freedom Road” contains a number of references to faith and religion, it is not at all a type of song you can regard as “preachy” or “judgmental”. Once again, I attribute this to Cory’s authentic vocal presentation and adept songwriting which anyone, regardless of faith or belief can learn from and be uplifted.

“Freedom Road” is an incredible single and carries an empowering message which resonates profoundly given the social and economic turmoil that is gripping the world.

Kudos to Cory and everyone involved in this project. Show your support by streaming it (Spotify link below) and sharing it with friends and loved ones for an enjoyable listening experience.

"Cory M. Coons Delivers Enjoyable “Freedom Road”"

Building on an already impressive catalog of Roots-Rock/Americana hits, Cory M. Coons has released “Freedom Road” to much anticipation and delight from his fans. A traditional rocking track featuring the prominent vocals way up in the forefront, the massages of taking the simple things in life for granted plays ever-present throughout this track. A song of redemption, as we are all faced with tumultuous times, and uncertainty at every step, “Freedom Road” presses the point of “sometimes we must brave the storm on our own while standing up for our beliefs and speaking our own truth”. With an underlying theme of faith and spirituality, “Freedom Road” also uses metaphor and imagery to detail the “loss of innocence, and finding that common ground with the common man, and asking God for strength and healing from above on our journey of faith on this current path.” Musically, “Freedom Road” offers many tasty snippets of creativity and talent, I especially enjoy the performance from drummer Chris Golden as he has some pretty intricate and well-timed fills, and rolls to resolve each cadence of the track, allowing Cory M. Coons to explore more of his vocal phrasing without fear of slipping off that downbeat. The perfectly tight, and in the-pocket playing of Marc D. Muir keeps the rhythm very tight as he also adds the melodies which accompany the many grooves of the track.

The production on “Freedom Road” is well-executed, as stated, the vocals are ever-present and easy to follow-along, sing-along, and absorb the meaning of each lyrical phrase. Each frequency is well represented throughout the listening space, while the allotted headroom allows all the overtones from the 12-string guitars to ring out true and clear. “Freedom Road” is an excellent track for a laid-back Sunday, cruising down the highway, or even as a jam track at a family picnic. “Freedom Road” is enjoyable, lighthearted, and does not push the boundaries too far allowing the audience to embrace the subtleties with ease. Yet, the underlying metaphor of the track, should not be lost on the audience as “Freedom Road” delivers an uplifting message each of us should be reminded of.

"Cory M. Coons – “Freedom Road” – Single Review"

Been a long time since we last checked in on artist Cory M. Coons – all the way back to 2018 when I was listening to & reviewing a handful of singles from a record he was working on called The Long Road Home. Always great to welcome someone back to our pages again, no matter how long it’s been…I dunno…call me crazy but I just sleep better at night knowing folks are out there doin’ what they’re meant to be doin.’ Cory included, of course – he’s sounding solid on this new single of his called “Freedom Road” for sure.

Somewhere in between a Bon Jovi ballad and the earnest sound of an artist like Neil Young, Cory finds his way through a plethora of emotions, thoughts, feelings, and insightful observations that muse on the state of humanity & where we seem to be at currently on this planet. It’s a really well assembled track – pretty much Adult Contemporary in many ways, which is a little outside of my realm, but I generally listen to a piece of everything here & there throughout my travels. You’ll hear what I’m talkin’ about here when you have a listen for yourself though – there’s a stoic & steady confidence that comes along with the way Cory and his cohorts play this song, which is essentially required if “Freedom Road” was ever going to live up to the full potential in the writing, which it does. A lot of that comes from the reliable beat from drummer Chris Golden…it’s such a sure, confident, and powerful hit on the snare he’s got that it kind of gives this single its own unbreakable backbone that the rest of the music can respond to. You’ve got Marc D. Muir rockin’ the lead & rhythm guitars, plus a 12-string acoustic, which Cory also plays himself along with the bass & singin’ his song on the ol’ microphone – together these guys all put a ton of focus into “Freedom Road” and from the sounds of the results, that’s totally paid off for them. While it’s fair to say that it might not be a song that makes you jump up & down out of excitement, there’s still an inherently triumphant, tried, tested & true spirit that runs through the veins of this song, providing a professional dose of stellar songwriting and execution that’s a perfect pairing with the concept. And c’mon now y’all – that solo around the 3:20 mark? You know you love it! You. Know. You. Love. IT! In fact, it’s so good that it’d be really hard to argue that it’s not the ultimate highlight to be found on “Freedom Road” in my opinion – but the reality is, the performances all-around from the music to the microphone don’t leave you wanting in any way, shape or form. Cory’s vocals are great, his harmonies hit the mark – it’s an endearing and empowering track every bit as much as an engaging one, giving you plenty for your mind to consider through the lyricism and how it relates to our lives today, while the melody in the music & main hooks go to work on your heart with soothing & comforting vibes.

Think of “Freedom Road” like a values-based tune…I think that’s the key. Within the lyrics, you’ll find a lot of wisdom that speaks strongly on behalf of Cory’s good moral compass and commentary on how crucial it is to stand up for what we believe in, no matter what it takes. The uplifting feeling that you get in the chorus vibes ends up being a direct reflection of all that…you get something out of listening to a song like “Freedom Road” and the way it makes you feel inside – that’s always worth a moment of your time ain’t it folks? While conceptually “Freedom Road” might follow a path you’ve heard within music before to a degree, Cory does a great job in handling the material with genuine care and communicates his sincerity when it comes to the core values that he’s singing on behalf of throughout his new single. Sure there’s a religious aspect to it as well, and all the more power to him & to you if God is your jam; I didn’t end up feeling like I was excluded from enjoying this as a person that has no idea what he believes in, I didn’t feel like “Freedom Road” was preachy in that sense, or overtly nationalistic in any kind of an annoying way either – like I said, it’s just a really well executed single from start to finish that gets to the heart of what Cory wanted to sing about in a very all-inclusive way that we can all connect to on some level. Whether it’s the musicianship, the vocals, or the lyricism – or quite potentially all three at once as intended of course, there’s pretty much something for everyone here in a song like “Freedom Road,” and especially for you singer/songwriter types. Cory’s crafted a well thought-out single that sounds great & supplies a sentiment you can believe in, absorb, and learn from – “Freedom Road” is a stellar addition to his catalog that delivers an earnest dose of humble heartfelt wisdom, light, love, and hope.

"Reflections on Home with Musician Cory M. Coons"

Cory M. Coons is an award-winning local musician who hails from South Dundas. His acoustic and electric rhythms blend melodic rock with influences of country, folk and even 80’s metal hair bands. Over his extensive career, he has travelled widely to perform throughout Canada and the United States with such artists as April Wine, Styx, Kim Mitchell and Glass Tiger. “All of my music has come full circle,” reminisces Coons, who after all his miles travelled, made the decision to return to his family homestead where his roots run deep. “This is where I grew up. It’s home for me. It’s where I began playing bass
guitar and joined my first band with neighbours in the seventh grade.” Home is also where the singer/songwriter recorded a holiday track called Burning Bright at Christmas Time near the end of 2020 with his sixyear old daughter Charleigh Lynn singing harmony. “Then,” Coons says, “in February, I released another single she and I recorded together called Far Away. This was very special because it was a song that I first wrote 30 years ago.” Coons is in his element when he is at home creating in his studio, and when he sits down to write, it is from the heart. “Some songs come to me quickly whereas others have to marinate and grow. I try to take
listeners on a journey, to create a memory and touch home.” In his song titled Leavin’, he sang about what it was like to take his career on the road. He wrote Remember Me in honour of his parents. “My Mom’s Magnus organ played in these walls,” he smiles. “She’d have country tunes on the radio, while Dad preferred singers like Dean Martin.” Coons is grateful to have worked on award-winning albums with producer Ron Nevison (known for working with bands like Heart, Styx, and Led Zeppelin), but has since made the switch to producing independent music with MTS Records. When asked if he will tour again after being nominated for the 2021 International Singer Songwriters Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year category, Coons has to grin. “Yes, of course, and I am open to collaborating with new independent artists too. But the whole family will be making a road trip and vacation out of it this time.” Cory M. Coons plans to continue writing over the summer ahead. "CORY M. COONS SPECIAL CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION"

South Dundas native, and popular singer-songwriter, Cory M. Coons is celebrating another award-winning year with a Christmas song featuring the next generation of the family. Cory’s 6 year old daughter, Charleigh Lynn, joins her father on “Burning Bright at Christmas Time”, singing backing vocals on the chorus of a joyful celebration of Christmas. The track is on MTS Records and is a wonderful antidote to the isolation and uncertainty so many will be experiencing this year. Cory has talked about his reason for releasing a special track for the season.

“I believe ‘Burning Bright at Christmas Time’ is a song about reflecting, sharing and celebrating the power of healing through our spirit, and the love we share for both family, (the younger and older generations) in our lives at this time of year,” says Cory. “I feel it’s as much for both those who have so much to be thankful for, as well as for those who maybe aren’t so fortunate these days, over the holidays… Many may be suffering through difficulties this year, and hopefully this song brings some peace, good will, joy and healing to the ones who might need some spiritual uplifting at Christmas time.”

It is a warm and friendly sound: my favourite kind of ringing acoustic guitar, mixed with seasonal sleigh bells, and the video to accompany the song follows the same theme, with clips from Upper Canada Village, Christmas lights, school concerts, and a family-centred declaration of joy.

All in all, it has been another great year for Cory, professionally at least, in spite of a pandemic and the loss of so many live music venues.

Cory’s presence on Spotify is quite something too. Listened to by over 90,000 people in 53 countries, his music has been streamed more than 110,000 times. His talent is clearly recognised far outside his South Mountain roots.

And there’s still radio: and Cory has been nominated in the Male Artist of the Year category for the Music Mafia Radio Awards for 2020. It is not surprising that he seems to garner award after award, nomination after nomination, as his songs, singing, and playing have a unique style and substance.

But better yet, there is one final chance to see Cory play live in 2020, when he appears at the South Branch Bistro in Kemptville for a gig on Saturday, December 19, for what he is calling the “CMC Acoustic Christmas” Show. - North Grenville/North Dundas Times

"CORY M. COONS – “BURNING BRIGHT AT CHRISTMAS TIME” IS EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED TO BOOST OUR SPIRITS!"

Cory M. Coons grew up in Eastern Ontario (South of Ottawa), Canada, where he cut his teeth playing guitar, bass, and singing in his High School. Now 30 years into his career, Coons has gone on to become an independent musician, singer, performer, as well as an award-winning and nominated songwriter. A melodic, roots-rock and Americana craftsman, Coons a series of full-length albums, EP’s and singles, working with top class musicians and technicians along the way. He has also often worked with Producer Ron Nevison (Heart, Bad Company, Chicago, Damn Yankees, Survivor, Styx, Night Ranger).

Cory M. Coons’ latest single, is titled “Burning Bright At Christmas Time”, released via MTS Records, the introduces Cory’s 6 year old daughter, Charleigh Lynn, on backing vocals. “I believe this is a song is about reflecting, sharing and celebrating the power of healing through our spirit, and the love we share for both family and friends in our lives at this time of year,” says Cory, continuing: “Many may be suffering through difficulties this year, and hopefully this song brings some peace, good will, joy and healing to the ones who might need some spiritual uplifting at Christmas time.”

Christmas songs have been more popular than ever in 2020. Since the calendar hit December 1, the Christmas anthems have been climbing up the charts, and they’re already dominating the airwaves. It’s understandable: given the year we’ve all had, a little merriness and festive cheer is exactly what we need to boost our spirits.

Crammed full of sleigh bells and jangling acoustic guitars, “Burning Bright At Christmas Time” brings the spirit and warmth we all need this year, given the absence of Christmas parties and endless days spent traipsing around the shops looking for the perfect gift. When it comes to making your own festive playlist, you’ll probably want a perfect blend of tried-and-tested festive favorites, and some fresh new originals like this one to refuel the Christmas fire.

Today, Christmas music runs the gamut from silly to revolutionary but Coons stays grounded. Simple, tuneful and to the point, Cory M. Coons has created the kind of Christmas song you can sing under the tree, or in the shower. Full of humanity and goodwill, his words will ring a familiar and nostalgic bell, with everybody who can remember a better time than the one we’re having right now.

Without a doubt, Cory M. Coons plants some relatable truths under the tree this festive season, with “Burning Bright At Christmas Time”, while his daughter Charleigh Lynn, adds just enough pure innocent sweetness to make the whole project sound fully authentic. The end result is a perfectly packaged festive song, which doesn’t sound like you’ve heard it before.

Christmas songs are always better when the artist makes a whole new song, instead of the obligatory cover. “Burning Bright At Christmas Time” sounds exactly how would expect a Christmas song from Cory M. Coons to sound. Warmly engaging. - Jamsphere.com

"Music Existence Single Review: Cory M. Coons “Leavin'”"

Resplendent in effervescent indie pop guitars and layered vocal harmonies, ‘Leavin’ by award winning Canadian artist Cory M. Coons superbly showcases his songwriting and performance ability. Musically, the track sounds at home with big budget studio recordings, but retains an independent spirit which appeals to the listener as genuine and sincere. Coons delivers the tale of a tumultuous relationship, resulting in a journey through American cities and towards the ultimate destination of self-realisation. Like the tempo of the song, the lyrics are constantly moving the listener forward at a steady pace, never looking back. This is a familiar story for Coons, and his voice carries the melody with an almost fatalistic sense of resignation to the fact that he is ‘…leaving, again’. Nothing could be further from the truth in terms of this artist’s career. Cory M. Coons is only beginning his musical adventure, and fans of indie rock / pop will no doubt welcome his future endeavours with open ears. – TMC - Music Existence

"BandCampDiaries - Cory M. Coons - Leavin’"

March 2020 - Artist and songwriter Cory m. Coons is back on the scene with a brand new studio single titled “Leavin’.” This song kicks off with a country-rock arrangement, tipping the hat off to artists as diverse as John Mellencamp, as well as Tom Petty and even Neil Young, only to mention but a few. What I love about this song is the fact that the guitars and drums bring some heft to the arrangement, yet the even pace of the song and the bright vocals add a mellowness to it, which makes for a truly special contrast! Cory M. Coons is all about creating music that’s heartfelt and spontaneous, and this song is a great example of what listeners and fans can expect from the album as a whole!

"Indie-Review.com Single Review - Cory M. Coons "Leavin'""

The track “Leavin” by Cory M. Coons has a very strong 90s country-rock styling to it. If that’s your thing, you will appreciate how well put together this song is. The mid-tempo song is a mixture of both peaceful and sad notes, carried by Coons’ soothing voice, that melds well with the tone of the song. The guitars are strong and the drums are powerful, holding everything together perfectly with the vocals.

“Leavin” is heartfelt and meaningful. It tells the sad story that happens to a lot of musicians, which isn’t as overdone as one would think. It’s really cool to hear all the tiny details in the lyrics too. It makes the song have a very personal feeling to it, like Coons is truly burdened and is sharing it with the listener.

The flow of the song is wonderful. As “Leavin” goes on, the listener really gets comfortable. As I mentioned before, Coons has a soothing voice. It’s smooth and tender, dripping with emotion. He has great talent and as the song continues, his impressive range is put on display. For those who are into emotional, rootsy classic rock, I think it will stick in their minds and connect with their hearts.

"Exclusive Interview With Top 20 iTunes Rocker Cory M. Coons"

Indie-Music: First off, thank you for taking the time to sit with us Cory. Please
take some time to introduce yourself to our readers. Who IS Cory M. Coons?

Cory M. Coons: Thank you for the opportunity! I am a Recording and Performing Artist, & Singer/Songwriter of many years from South Mountain, Ontario, Canada!

IM: You’ve released several projects produced by Ron Nevison, legendary producer. How did that partnership come about?

CMC: I started sending some ideas to Ron through a couple of different music platforms online where his profile was posted as the legendary rock producer that he is… And we started having some conversations in around 2012/13 I think it was, as he really enjoyed my work and that eventually led to us working together on my 2014 E.p “Share A Little Time” in California, and then again on my latest album “The Long Road Home” in 2018 in Vancouver, WA.

IM: Tell us about your latest single, “Love Will Fire the Flame.”

CMC: This is the 5th and final single being released from TLRH album on MTS Records… I think it talks mainly about having the strength and tenacity to keep pushing through all the adversities we face, and of course having the element of love to fall back on which can stir up our desires when we face these challenges and struggles.

IM: You were nominated for a Josie Music Award this year in Dollywood. How was that whole experience?

CMC: It was amazing for both myself and my family to experience going to Tennessee this past September for the 5th Annual show. Dollywood was great for my daughter to experience for the fist time, and also to have both her and my wife with me on the red carpet as I was nominated for “Male Album Of The Year” was awesome! It was a true honour for me to have this body of work of mine nominated this year. - Indie-Music

In fact, Cory's music has been streamed more than 34,000 times on the leading streaming service.

Now, the prolific melodic roots rocker returns with his fourth single from "The Long Road Home:" "Break The Fall" (MTS Records). Coons says, "Break The Fall' is a romantic tale of heartbreak & loss, with hints in the story of one that got away...And the power of one's words bringing a belief in truth and change."

"CORY M. COONS – THE LONG ROAD HOME SAMPLER"

Cory M. Coons – The Long Road Home – Album Sampler/Singles Review

According to legend, Cory M. Coons has been out there making music since he was about thirteen years-old. Kind of a relevant fact…though I have absolutely no idea how old he is now…but what I can tell ya, is he latched onto the style & sound of music he grew up loving and clearly never let go. He’s human! Face facts…whether you play music professionally or not, you’re likely the same way…you still love those classics from your youth and more than likely still hold a lot of those bands/artists you were digging on way-back-when dear to this day. Cory M. Coons wears the sum of his influences well…this suits him.

That being said, there’s no doubt an uphill climb coming for the man in the modern-day era…there’s an audience for this style/sound he’s got, but it’s changed…and the majority is harder to reach, now relegated largely to the online realm. But make no mistake…there’s a whole lot of lighters-up fist-pumpers out there still waiting to strap on a headband and rock right out…just takes a bit more work to find’em, but they are out there. While the sound Cory might be rockin’ might not be what you typically hear on the surface of the mainstream these days…let’s not forget where this music has come from and how it spent years & years & years dominating the charts…it’s a timeless style for a reason.

So let’s see here…we’ve got a sample of Cory’s new album The Long Road Home with a couple of recommended tunes in the mix here to review and a couple of dealer’s choice cuts from the record that I stumbled upon on my own. We’ll start with the tracks I’ve been directed to and go from there…

Production & performance-wise, there’s nothing to fault Cory or his band for or take away any points for any reason…which essentially leaves you with personal taste and what you do/don’t like yourself. A track like “Once Too Many, Twice Not Enough” has a bright melody & sweet energy driving the chorus hooks…I feel like they’re memorable enough. There’s a grandeur in this track that sounds like it’s about to build and explode into a cover of Tom Cochrane’s “Big League,” but ultimately “Once Too Many, Twice Not Enough” heads for a more pop-inclined approach. Great tones on the guitars, solid spirit in the music & meaning behind the lyricism…the structure is designed to expand and open-up widely to create those big sing-along moments. If I’m being truthful, I’m probably more of a fan of everything that’s not the chorus on this particular tune; I can acknowledge the strength of the hooks, but they’re probably a bit too bouncy & playful for myself. Excellent musicianship in Cory’s backing band, Cory sings the tune with passion & heart, and the production has a remarkable clarity that invites you right in.

“Long Road (Dead Man’s Dream)” adds some real definition to the groove & sound of the music – and my ears really dig that. This second cut had more of the beef I was looking for than I was getting on that first track…this is meatier. The low-end riff is freakin’ magnificent and really keeps this cut movin’ strong. Like a rhythmic version of G&R at times, Cory has that slight Axl-ish sound to his vocals…which again, for people that love the music in similar bands/artists of that era, well, they’re pretty much guaranteed to like this based on that comparison alone. By comparison to the first cut though, I think “Long Road (Dead Man’s Dream)” probably stands a bigger chance of reaching a wider potential audience…let’s face it, no matter what you normally listen to, those are some ear-catching riffs that demand your attention. The balance on this cut is excellent…I couldn’t decide if I liked the verse or the chorus more, and I always love having that problem whenever I can…it tells me that each part of the song has its own strength. And when you’re real lucky, those main elements fit together perfectly and you get a great jam like “Long Road (Dead Man’s Dream)” to come out…it’s rare, but it does happen! Cory actually reminds me a bit of the vocals in Ugly Kid Joe on this cut…been a while since I thought of those guys…used to really love that band and I’d suppose I’d say I still do, even though it’s been a long time since I’ve put it on. Killer guitar solos and instrumentation once again…like listen to moments around the 1:20 spot and acknowledge that killer tone and the grinding groove busting in to separate the verse & chorus & light up the musicianship for a moment or two along the way – same thing around 2:25 only bigger, better, longer, & stronger…but you get the idea, lots to take in on this wild experience.

Even though the familiarity in the approach to the guitars on a track like “Would You Stay?” will remind you of several hit-songs from the past – again, there’s a reason you’ll feel like you recognize that sound – it’s because it WORKS. Personally, I don’t know how people resist it…there’s just something seriously charming about the pace and way that sound hits us…you know, the whole like, what is it…”Every Breath You Take” style of approach…you know what I mean, equal doses of melody and rhythm, suppressed & controlled brilliantly in a way that really lets the sound shine right through to your soul. So did this catch my attention when sifting through the rest of the record to collect a couple more samples? You bet. Again – I don’t know how it wouldn’t catch EVERYONE’S attention…”Would You Stay?” has that melodic magic that makes moments last a lifetime…a song that you instantly want to become part of your own personal soundtrack. Cory’s put together a decent melody & vocal flow to add to the music – but full disclosure, it’s the music on this cut that is likely the most defining factor in what pulls us in to listen. Highlight solo just before the three-minute mark too…short & sweet but highly effective; if anything, from what I’ve heard on these tunes whenever a short solo is busted out, all I want is a few more bars or a few more seconds of it…the musicianship in this band of Cory’s is excellent and I certainly wouldn’t shy away from including more of that in the future. In any event – I like me some “Long Road (Dead Man’s Dream)” – there’s a great chance that would have walked away as my favorite of this set were it not for the smooth rhythm & sweetness of “Would You Stay?” – love this tune.

“Break The Fall” was another great tune I stumbled across in this set of songs from The Long Road Home. Even though “Would You Stay?” is fairly gentle & subtle, “Break The Fall” probably dials back the energy arguably even further…but again, these ingredients stand out…each element of the musicianship contributes to the song. Kind of like a combination of what you’d imagine you’d get from a collaboration of something like…hmmm…like Bon Jovi, Heart, and The Pretenders. You get that ballad-rock approach of a Jovi with the writing, the production of a band like Heart, & melodic sound of a band like The Pretenders…and ultimately, that leads Coons to a seriously lighter-up moment to finish this song on real highlights that make for a memorable impact. You get a couple different aspects of Cory’s overall sound on “Break The Fall” though…you get that melodic rock-ballad dude providing the smoothness on the mic…and eventually, you get the wilder-side of his persona as the song heads into its finale. The lyrics are solid, the pace is comforting, the sound is warm & inviting…there’s a melancholy in this tune, but it’s got equal parts hope in the mix as well…nothing desolate here, just relatable & real. The final forty-five seconds of this song…are perhaps my favorite moments…I love the fireworks in this finale and how it raises the stakes one last time and I dig the final acoustic deconstruction to the end. Overall…this Cory M. Coons guy seems to know what he’s doing when it comes to the art of songwriting and delivering on the potential of his efforts through the performances on these recordings – dude writes a solid tune and he plays them with all the passion, skill, and heart you’d hope to find in any kind of music you listen to.

"Cory M Coons Delivers Melodically Rich Roots Rock, Listen to Once Too Many, Twice Not Enough"

Let me open with Cory M Coons’ accolades. Ready. Set. Go: nominated at the Producer’s Choice Honors (formerly Los Angeles Music Awards) in the Rock Artist Of The Year category in 2015, recipient of the Producer’s Choice Honor for Studio Album Of The Year in 2014 for his EP Share A Little Time, and he also received nominations for Male Singer/Songwriter and Record Of The Year. Cory is also a respected instructor in the St. Lawrence Seaway Valley and at Rock My House Music Centre in Kemptville, Ontario. He has performed alongside Canadian favorites such as April Wine, Kim Mitchell, Glass Tiger and David Wilcox.

With that out of the way, Cory M Coons recently released a melodically rich roots/country rock album titled The Long Road Home, produced by Multi-Gold and Platinum music veteran Ron Nevison (Heart, Bad Company, Damn Yankees, Survivor, Styx, Night Ranger).

Today I want to highlight the single Once Too Many, Twice Not Enough.

As mentioned above, Cory’s music is melodically rich. Guitar driven Once Too Many, Twice Not Enough does not disappoint in that department. Blending elements of classic roots rock with hints of country rock, Coons delivers a familiar yet refreshing sound that will resonate with more mature listeners without excluding the younger demographics who might have missed the great music that came from this genre in the 60s, 70s and even the 80s.

A powerful, potent rock jam, Once Too Many, Twice Not Enough is going to stick with you long after the song ends. The array of guitar tones woven so perfectly with upbeat rhythms and an uplifting atmosphere provide the engaging soundscape where Cory M Coons‘ performance acts as the icing on this sonic layer cake. - MiddleTennesseeMusic.com

"Cory M. Coons Gives Roots Music Fans One To Remember On "The Long Road Home""

We are not going to discover Cory M. Coons at this stage of his career; the Canadian has been recognized and won a lot of accolades in recent years, cementing his place as one of Country rock's hottest properties. His 2018 new album, The Long Road Home, gives us what we all expect from Coons, but also providing a wide variety of influences, such as Folk or classic Rock, to name a couple.

Could this be a new musical direction for Coons in the foreseeable future? I don’t know, but this album is composed of eight pretty solid tracks, finding a pretty healthy balance between styles, melodies and rhythm.

One point worth taking into consideration is that this album has been produced by the world-renowned Ron Nevison, who has worked in the past with the likes of Styx, Night Ranger, Bad Company, Heart, among others–this has provided "The Long Road Home" with some stellar production, thus making it sound perfectly in every single aspect. Whether it’s on soulful and heartfelt tracks like "Long Road (Dead Man's Dream)", where Coons also allows himself some room to showcase his skills as a guitar player, or in the exotic charms of "Chameleon Inside" (a track that may as well be a metaphor of Coons’ own growth as a musician), the production sounds stellar and a musician of Coons’ stature deserves no less.

One of the things that I love about this album and Coons overall as a musician, is the fact that he can provide a lot of really organic music; this album is composed of eight solid tracks that reek of classic Rock ‘n’ Roll–no auto tune, no massive editing, no nothing. Just good quality music and this is something that has made him in one of Canada’s finest exports in the Country rock genre.

If I had to point out something about this album it would the following: you don’t normally hear the word “epic” thrown around in Country rock albums, but then you hear the song "Love Will Fire the Flame" and you understand why Coons is the proverbial fish out of the water that this genre really needed. A touching mix of acoustic and electric guitars, this is, at least to me, the finest piece of the whole thing and it’s a real testament of this man’s talents.

I think this is my favorite Country rock album from 2018 and Coons’ finest so far: it’s compact, it’s well-written, has a stellar production and it has a very organic feel that makes everything much more powerful.

This is one to remember.

"CORY M. COONS: “THE LONG ROAD HOME” – A FANTASTIC MIX OF ROCK SONGS!"

Award-winning Canadian recording artist and songwriter, Cory M. Coons has been performing, writing and recording music since about the age of 13. The release of his latest album “The Long Road Home”, sees the Eastern Ontario creative collaborating with veteran Multi-Gold and Platinum decorated music producer, Ron Nevison, (Heart, Bad Company, Damn Yankees, Survivor, Styx, Night Ranger), along with additional tracking/overdubs, and driving force on guitar on this new record, guitarist/engineer Marc D. Muir. As a performer, Cory has opened and played alongside such treasured National Canadian Artists like April Wine, Kim Mitchell, Glass Tiger and David Wilcox. With its catchy hooks, thoughtful lyricism and great instrumental work, this is a great, extremely accessible melodic rock album.

Sure, this stuff isn’t in keeping with the current club-beats that are being pumped out by today’s pop-rock scene, but who cares, it feels good to just have some straight-up radio rock that wasn’t done by some teenage ‘rock stars’ riding the waves of computer generated soundscapes, singing with auto-tuned wobbles their mouths and putting out mediocre tunes for pseudo fans, who quite frankly wouldn’t know good rock n’ roll music if it kicked them in the balls. “The Long Road Home” is a fantastic mix of songs, most of which the casual rock listener would undoubtedly enjoy.

When I finally listened to “The Long Road Home” in full, I was in a daze; this music was just so emotional. It didn’t rely on screams or trippy vocals, loud guitars or menacing beats, it just was captivating, due to its expansive melodies and all-embracing arrangements.

Cory M. Coons creates extraordinarily enthralling pieces that range from lighthearted romps to melancholy ballads to epic up-tempo motifs. In fact, I can’t honestly say there is a single weak moment on this album. Moreover, Cory has a voice for the ages, one that is radio-ready for the mainstream, yet unique and powerful.

As evidenced by this album, Cory can pull off an incredible variety of singing styles, he can rock out on “Long Road ( Dead Man’s Dream”, and “Trail of the Chosen One”, and then croon on “Would You Stay” and “Shame On You”, where he even shows off his reverberating falsetto, while leaving the heartfelt emotional smoothness for “Break the Fall”.

His voice just seems to carry a tone not present in many singers of today, and it’s apparent in nearly every song. With the backing band also supplying a fervent bluesy rock feel, and epic builds that perfectly suit Cory’s singing style, which has many similarities to Jon Bon Jovi’s timbre and phrasing.

The special occasion to hear all of these mesmerizing elements, occurs on “Once Too Many, Twice Not Enough” and the flawless final song, “Love Will Fire the Flame”. This for me is the album’s magnum opus. Awash with both acoustic and electric guitars, a melody that soars, and a fleshed out arrangement that covers diverse tempos and moods.

This is the kind of warm epic sound that made mega group, Kansas, such a household name. There’s something timeless about good rock music, and its all here. The tracks are ripe with traditional goodness; bold heroic choruses, deep rich guitar tones in brilliant incandescent chords and muscular riffs.

“The Long Road Home” is a melodic rock album of, and for our times, delivered by a talented singer-songwriter, and while it would be an absolute delight to see him ever overtake this album, to do so would seem like a daunting task. What Cory M. Coons has done here is create an album completely devoid of filler, while also crafting such meticulous pieces that you never want it to stop. - Tuneloud.com

IROQUOIS – “I think the title says it all, “ said Cory Coons, song-writer and singer. “I’ve come back to my roots: some of these songs were nurtured over several years. And for the last four or five years, I’ve been on the road quite a bit.

I needed to get feeling “at home” again with my song-writing.”

Cory has just released The Long Road Home, his latest album. The songs are all original to the album, except for a re-worked version of a song from 2012.

This, Cory’s fourth full-length album, was developed in Vancouver, Washington, where Ron Nevison, his producer, is located.

“We worked out of a studio called Crossroads,” Cory explained. “Ron uses an old analog sound board for the sessions as he feels it makes the sound warmer when you start recording. The digitalization comes later.”

At guitarist Marc Muir’s Cornwall studio, adding in Allen Hunter on bass and Thom Sullivan on drums, they overdubbed the harmony vocals and added other instrumentation ‘colour.’ The final mixing was done in 2018 in Los Angeles at DNA Mastering.

“I’m an emotional song-writer,” Cory said. “Sometimes in my music I tell stories or describe feelings. “Eyes of Blue” was written for my four-year-old daughter. “Dead Man’s Dream”, a key song on the album, I leave to the listener to interpret. The true test for any musician is what does the listener think one of my songs is about?”

Cory has been a professional musician for 25 years, although he confesses that he’s been playing all his life.

Guitar is his instrument.

“I’ve been building on the melodic rock since 2014, when my EP Share A Little Time won a Producer’s Choice Honour at the LA Music Awards. Bon Jovi, Styx, Neil Young, these are some of the artists who have inspired me,” he said.

The Long Road Home has been getting air time on streaming internet radio, on Kingston radio and lately at select rock stations all over Canada. CDs are available at Rock My House, Sandy Row Golf Course and Shelley’s Kitchen. “We’ve been getting a really positive response on the internet, and we’re climbing on the charts. I’m also on iTunes.”

Still passionate about playing live (“I love that connection you can make with an audience.”), Cory performed June 9 at South Branch Bistro in Kemptville and will be part of an acoustic show at the August Brockville Ribfest “with a full band.” He also teaches guitar and bass at Kevin Eamon’s Rock My House.

“I look to touch people with my songs,” Cory explained. “I want them to take something home with them. After all, a song becomes everybody else’s, not your own, once you put it out there. Hopefully the songs in The Long Road Home are insightful and relateable.”

"Cory M. Coons’ “Timeless” launches tonight at McCloskey’s"

MARCH 18, 2017
CHESTERVILLE — Local rocker Cory M. Coons drops his fourth solo CD here this evening, on the heels of a recent trip out west to lay down tracks for his fifth project — a full-out professional studio album set for release later this year.

Tonight’s 9:30 p.m. celebration at McCloskey’s (March 18) serves as the launch for Timeless, an EP “already in the can” for a couple of months when Coons spoke with Nation Valley News at the end of February.

Recorded at two local studios, Coons says the resulting EP is a largely acoustic collection of five tracks. It’s a product of Bob Windsor’s Soundbox Studio in Kemptville and Marc Muir’s Cornwall-based Muir’s Music Manor.

Muir, a longtime associate of Coons’s — they once toured together with a band in the early 1990s — has lent his guitar-playing talents to the latest recording as well as the upcoming studio album recorded this month in Vancouver, Washington. “It’s great to have him involved,” says Coons, a resident of Pleasant Valley Rd. near South Mountain.

Three of the songs on Timeless are entirely new to the listening public. Though it has one full production track, the rest of the EP features “a lot of acoustic flavour” and a “stripped-down” sound, says Coons, adding, “One of the songs, Crumbs, was actually released in ’04 and was on my album back then. So this is a stripped-down acoustic version of it.”

Another track, Eyes of Blue, written for the artist’s soon-to-be three-year-old daughter, has been on Youtube for a while. “That’s the one that’s been out on the Internet, but it hasn’t been on a CD yet,” he says.

Tonight’s two-set show will open with titles from the new EP, says the artist, moving into other material in the second set. “We’ll be playing selections from Timeless and a few cover songs thrown in, too, in the second set, he says. “We’re hoping for good things, get some people out. Hopefully it’ll be a combination of an intimate setting, with the second set a little more danceable.”

At the time of the interview, he was eagerly anticipating his Feb. 28 through March 6 trip to Vancouver, Washington — accompanied by Muir as guitar-playing wingman — to record the bulk of his next album with famed music producer Ron Nevison. Coons last worked with the Led Zeppelin, Heart and Ozzy Osbourne producer on his third CD, another EP, in January 2014. The following November, Share A Little Time went on to be recognized as Studio Album of the Year by the LA Music Awards.

“Working with Ron is going to be cool again because he’s so connected to everyone in the industry.”

Coons says the new work — tentatively titled Long Road Home — will be a full studio-album LP of eight tracks, employing real session musicians on bass and drums for an authentic sound. “The new album will be more like commercial rock, radio friendly, and melodic.”

He adds, “It’ll be a little edgier…. The songs are pretty fast, driving type songs. A little more electric guitar oriented with lots of harmonies that I like.”

Coons suggests he may even compete again in Tinseltown’s latest version of the LA Awards this November — the Producers’ Choice Honours Awards. His last trip to Hollywood saw him perform on the famed Whisky A Go Go stage as a precursor the 2014 awards.

But for tonight, catch him at McCloskey’s. - Nation Valley News: By Nelson Zandbergen

"Coons brings home L.A. music award"

W. Gibb – Leader staff MORRISBURG – It was a dream of South Dundas composer/singer Cory Coons just to be nominated for one of the 2014 Los Angeles Music Awards. But he returned home to South Dundas with more than just the honour of performing with other independent artists at the legendary Whiskey A Go-Go as part of a musical show case. Cory was presented with the Producers Choice Award for Studio Album of the Year in 2014 at the November 12 gala held at the Avalon Theater. “I am very excited and happy,” Coons said. “I wasn’t expecting this award, and was just thrilled to be involved in the whole nomination and performance process. It is really a great honour to have been recognized among independent artists.” Although he was originally nominated in the Male Singer/ Songwriter and Record of the Year categories, Coons was thrilled that his 2014 album, Share A Little Time, was regarded as outstanding by members of the music industry. The Producers Choice Award
honours quality material and recording. He was presented with the award by Al Bowman, founder of the L.A. Music Awards, the Hollywood Fame Awards and the Phoenix Awards. In his acceptance speech, Coons thanked his family, his parents, his sister and his many supporters here at home. “Remember Me”, a cut from the album, and written in honour of his parents, Mervin and Doris, has been receiving heavy rotation from the internet radio station, The Globe, in Hollywood, and getting increasing air play in California and other states. Coons’ work is also garnering good reviews. “An award like this is another fantastic tool to use in moving forward in my musical career,” Coons explained. “Currently I am at work on some new musical material,” said the South Dundas recording artist and songwriter, and freelance guitar instructor. Cory Coons’ award winning, Share A Little Time is available at Kevin Eamon’s Rock My House, on CdBaby.com, Cory’s own website and on iTunes. - W. Gibb – Leader staff MORRISBURG

"Coons hitting the right notes"

South Mountain’s Cory Coons recently accepted the Producer’s Choice Award for studio album of the year at the 2014 Los Angeles Music Awards at the Avalon Theatre in Hollywood Wed., Nov. 12

SOUTH MOUNTAIN – South Mountain crooner Cory M. Coons is moving on up in the music world. On Wed., Nov. 12, Coons took home the Producer’s Choice Award for studio album of the year at the 2014 Los Angeles Music Awards at the Avalon Theatre in Hollywood. Originally nominated in two categories, Coons travelled to Los Angeles (L.A). in Septem- ber to par-ticipate in the event’s nomination night at the legendary Whisky A Go-Go. While there he performed songs from his album, Share a Little Time, which was produced by multi gold and platinum veteran music producer Ron Nevison with Grammy Award winning program- mer and arranger Jeff Bova, and among those who performed on the album was one of L.A.’s top ses- sion guitarists, Tim Pierce. It has been roughly two weeks since Coons and his sister, Shel- ley, spent close to four days in L.A. for the awards ceremony, and the singer is still raving about the ex- perience. “[It] was fantastic,” he said. “Just being around all the other art- ists and past celebrities who were also receiv- ing awards, like lifetime achievements and such… was really fun and excit- ing. And, the show was great. All the perfor- mances, as well. And also getting to hang out with
my producer [Nevison] of the new songs was great too.” As for what is next on Coons’ music agenda, he said he plans to “continue what I’m doing, and keep performing more shows, writ- ing more songs, and promoting the new [album].” Coons said it is important for him and his music to reach as many potential new fans as possible, and it sounds like that might already be in the works, as the title track from Share a Little Time has already been released as a single in the U.S. Now, with a prestigious award under his belt, and a song from his newest album hitting the air- waves south of the border, Coons is primed and ready to kick his mu- sical career into full swing. “It is awesome to be recog- nized,” he said. “And I feel hon- oured to be in such great company with the L.A. Music Awards.” Coons’ new album can be pur- chased online from his website (www.corymcoons.com), as a download through CD Baby, iTunes, and their digital partners. - Winchester Press Nov 26/2014 - by Sandy Casselman Press staff

"Rising star Cory Coons, nominated for two L.A. Music Awards"

Rising star Cory Coons, nominated for two L.A. Music Awards W. Gibb – Leader staff IROQUOIS – It’s a chance every musician hopes for: a nomination at the prestigious Los Angeles Music Awards, scheduled for September 25, 2014. However, well-known and very talented independent artist Cory Coons has learned that he has two reasons to be pretty excited about this year’s Music Awards. Coons has just been notified of his nomination in two categories at the ceremony: Male singer/ songwriter and Record of the Year for his Share a Little Time. He will be flying out to L.A., to take the stage on Nomination Night at the Whiskey A Go-Go September 25, during the gala 2014 Los Angeles Music Awards. This will be followed by the actual Awards night on November 12. It’s a pivotal moment in the hard-working young artist’s career. “I know that in the end, it’s where the road takes us,” Coons said, “and I’m trying to stay grounded. But I’m pretty excited. The nominations are a big step for me. These awards are a kind of spring board into the professional industry and the Grammies. I would really love the support of my community in this endeavour. Fan support really does keep artists doing what they do.” Joining Cory on the L.A. journey will be his long time friend and associate, a noted musician himself, Kevin Eamon, owner/operator of Rock My House. Eamon will be Coons’ official sponsor at the first of two red carpet events. The road to L.A. is the latest result of years of hard work and dedication on the part of Cory Coons. He has honed his talent, his voice and his writing skills through effort and persistence. This year, he flew out to Los Angeles in January for two intensive weeks working directly with famed producer Ron Nevison. Nevison is one of the top producers in North America. He has worked with mainstream rock groups like Heart, Meat Loaf, Chicago, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Bad Company, Night Rangers and many others. “I submitted music to Ron over the last two years, and when I reached out to him about producing some material, he readily agreed to it. This was hugely significant to me because Ron can work with any artist he wants to in the music business.” Ron oversaw Cory’s time in Los Angeles, setting him up in the studio with back up artists Jeff Bova and Tim Pierce. Bova is a producer/arranger who’s already won a Grammy. Pierce was the original session guitar player on Bon Jovi’s Runaway, and Rick Springfield’s guitar player. Cory described it as “an honour” to work with these artists. In fact, Bova created a beautiful string arrangement for Cory’s Remember Me, a cherished song that he wrote as a tribute to his late parents. In the L.A. studio, the musicians laid down tracks for a new EP Cory is releasing to jibe with the September trip stateside. Coons felt that “Ron helped me a lot, especially on vocals. He took the time to get the best out of my voice. And he’s an advisory panel member (with other producers like Eddie Kramer) with the L.A. Music Awards. He was both a connection and a help to me.” There is voting ballot system in place on the L.A. Music Awards website. Cory needs the support of voters in this community to help him score well in his two categories. By going on line, and voting (more than once is acceptable!), local fans could really help Cory make his dreams come true. “If things go well on nomination night, I will need the support of voters and fans all over Canada and world wide. Should I win in one or both of the categories, then the sky’s the limit. Things could go in many directions.” Again, the young South Dundas musician remains grounded. “Even if I don’t win, the experience of taking part, the media exposure, the publicity is immense. It’s all going to be really exciting to me.” People can vote for Cory Coons right now, with the polls closing on November 12, just before the Music Awards broadcast. Fan support can make a big difference. The link is http://www. lamusicawards.net/nominees. html. - W. Gibb – Leader staff IROQUOIS

""Share A Little Time" - Cd Review at NoDepression.com"

The soaring choruses and choirboy vocals of Boston and Styx leave indelible fingerprints in this five-track EP from Canada-based singer/songwriter Cory M. Coons. The title track even opens like a Boston tune, with a chiming acoustic guitar that would’ve made “Amanda” swoon. Unsigned or independent artists usually don’t have songs with this kind of immaculate sheen so it’s no surprise that Coons managed to corral ‘80s AOR producer extraordinaire Ron Nevison to polish his recordings. For those unaware, Nevison helped revive Heart’s career in 1985 with a self-titled effort of Top-40 blockbusters (“These Dreams,” “What About Love”). Nevison’s slick style is a perfect match for Coons’ music, heavily influenced by ‘70s and ‘80s rock-radio anthems but with a rootsy undertow. Coons’ vocal style is reminiscent of Dennis DeYoung of Styx, Steve Perry of Journey, and the late Brad Delp of Boston. It is emotionally fragile yet percolating with unyielding optimism. On “Seven Year Itch,” Coons and Nevison capture that magical moment, when studio wizardry blends effortlessly with pop hooks. “Don’t let your music die alone and unsung,” Coons sings, a message to all to pursue your dreams before the “fountain of youth runs dry.” Appropriately, there is a killer guitar solo. Slower tracks such as “Remember Me” and “When a Dream Was All We Had” recalls the power ballads of the ‘80s, veering towards Bon Jovi at their commercial peak. Traces of country, folk, and the blues are filtered within the EP but this is classic rock at its finest and most attractively produced.

"Interview with Cory M. Coons - NoDepression.com"

Q: When did you decide to become a musician? How old were you at the time, and was it something that you intended to pursue as a career?

A: In about 1985, I was 13 when I started playing bass. I was a bass player for about 12 years, professionally and semi-professionally. Played in high school bands, then afterwards in the mid '90s I travelled and toured in Northern Ontario and the southeast U.S. in retro-rock cover bands. Music has always been something I have pursued as a passion and potential career.

Q: Who were your earliest musical influences? In what ways did they inspire you?

A: Primarily I would say '70s and '80s melodic commercial rock, like Styx and Bon Jovi, more of the rock scene then, even as far back as Duran Duran and the Beach Boys, and a little bit of older country up to newer artists like Keith Urban. I just love good harmonies and very memorable melodies in songs.

Q: How did you end up working with renowned producer Ron Nevison?

A: I had been sending songs to Ron Nevison for a couple of years previous to my working with him and his team of session guys this past January 2014 in L.A. and San Rafael, CA. We agreed to work together on some new material, and it turned out great.

Q: How would you describe the music scene in Canada?

A: Where I live outside the small town of South Mountain, ON (south of Canada’s Capital of Ottawa), there isn’t much of a music scene; you have to travel to the cities of Toronto or Montreal. Ottawa has an OK scene, but a lot of well-known venues have disappeared over the last decade or more. But there are a few that have emerged and are cool places to play. There are also a couple smaller cities and towns that still have a somewhat active music scene, like Cornwall, Brockville, and Kingston.

Q: Your music crosses the boundaries between country and Adult Album Alternative. How would you describe it?

A: I think my music, at least in the past has been a cross between country rock and melodic pop/rock or “AAA” as you say. I think my direction right now is a little more leaning towards the melodic rock and acoustic rock-oriented style, with radio-friendly commercial overtones. Although I am still rooted in the electric rock elements as well.

Q: What inspires your songwriting? There’s never one thing for sure that inspires me, it can be a combination of things.

A: I’m sometimes an emotional songwriter drawing on personal experiences in my life, or how I may see myself and my surroundings. And other times I like to come up with a good story in my songs. Often times people can really relate to something that touches home with them in a song. So I really try to create something memorable for people to enjoy and remember, both lyrically and melodically.

Q: Have you been able to find much success in Canada, especially on the radio? I have had some success in Canada.

A: Mostly in my region locally in what we call the St. Lawrence Seaway Valley region along the 401 Highway, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties, and Ottawa region. Of course the Internet, online radio, and some normal radio play here has helped with a broader reach to a wider audience. I always like to keep a solid fan base and supporters of my music here at home locally. And with the involvement I now have with the L.A. Music Awards Nominations this year in 2014 (I'm nominated in the Male Singer-Songwriter and Record of the Year categories), it feels great to be in such good company with this scene, too. I’m really looking forward to the awards show on November 14th in Hollywood at The Avalon Theater.

Q: What are your goals for the future?

A: To continue performing, creating, writing, and recording more of the music I like to write. To continue to try and carve out an identity and a living with my music and career. It seems it’s all you can do these days in a very tough business. I also teach guitar at a local music center and here at home. I’m just following what I love to do, and be who I am, a working musician and a singer/songwriter, and a happy new father to my 6-month-old baby girl and my lovely wife. Family is everything.

Tycoons - July/Aug 2008
July 17th, 2008

There is more than a hint of nostalgia in the music of four-piece rock act TYCOONS.

Fronted by lead vocalist/guitarist Cory M. Coons, TYCOONS has existed in one form or another since 1999 when Coons cut his first record.

Coons’ current bandmates include bass player Francis Thibodeau and drummer Barry Billingham, both of whom have played with him for a number of years, and guitarist/songwriter Sean Page, who’s a relatively recent addition.

Together they crank out a brand of gritty guitar rock that owes a great deal to the inspiration of classic rock stalwarts like Bon Jovi, Rush, and April Wine and draws as well on proponents of southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Grinderswitch.

The sound is big and full with soaring vocals, tight harmonies, and plenty of slick licks.

Coons and company have the kind of honest, straight-ahead rock sound that a large chunk of the population over 30 is still looking for.

TYCOONS has been regular at venues throughout the St. Lawrence Seaway Valley circuit since 2000, but could likely hunker down in most parts of the country and find an audience with tracks like “Crumbs,” “Rhythm Train,” and “Too Many Nights.”

Although touring has been limited to Ontario, western Quebec, and northern New York state, bits and pieces of the music has found its way elsewhere. A number of songs have been used in corporate advertising campaigns – electronics giant Philips has utilized three of songs to promote its consumer media products. The band has also opened for a score of artists like David Wilcox, April Wine, Prairie Oyster, and Glass Tiger.

TYCOONS is gearing up for another CD due for release later this year or early in 2009. On deck is noted producer Gary LaBarr. - Canadian Musician

"Cory M. Coons Plays Papa Gus, Sat, Feb 16th"

Nelson Nandbergen
Record Staff
CHESTERVILLE —

Fresh off the release of his latest radio single, veteran local performer Cory M. Coons brings his repertoire of original and cover tunes to Chesterville this month.
“We’ll be playing a few selections off the new CD and some older stuff as well,” says the 40-year-old South Mountain resident of his Feb. 16 show at Papa Gus Bar & Grill.
A mainstay on the local music scene, the lead singer and guitar player last month dropped the debut single, “Roses Need The Rain”, off his third and latest solo album, Here & Now.
The CD is “kind of country, pop and rock all in one,” says Coons, also describing his style as “rootsy rock meets country rock.” He counts a range of influences from his years growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, from Bon Jovi to John Mellencamp, Bryan Adams and Keith Urban. While admitting to being a professional musician for the past 15 years, he’s been playing in bands since his
graduation from Seaway District High School, touring Northern Ontario in ’92-’93 with one outfit and later travelling the southern U.S. with another.
More recently, Coons was known as the frontman for local retro rockers, The Tycoons. Through a lengthy career, he’s opened or shared the stage with such Canadian greats as April Wine,
Kim Mitchel, Glass Tiger, David Wilcox, Prairie Oyster and Danick Dupelle. His current backup band includes musicians from the Kemptville area, among them Bob Windsor of local
Eddie & The Stingrays fame and proprietor of Soundbox Studios. Windsor co-produced Coons’s latest album and single, which were independently released, making full use of the online digital
distribution techniques available to self-starting artists these days. “Roses Need The Rain” has garnered some airplay on “community and college-type” radio, according to Coons, who
looks forward to returning to Papa Gus’s. He last played the venue when it was located in Finch. “We’d like to see a lot of people coming and supporting local talent.”
Another local band from the Finch and Berwick area, Shot in the Dark, will open at 9:30 p.m. Tickets to the show are $10 at the door.
Coons’s recordings are available at corymervincoons.com as CDs and as digital downloads via links to Cd Baby and their online partners, including iTunes.

"Cory Coons Hitting The Airwaves With Single From Latest Album"

Cory Coons hitting the airwaves with first single from latest album by Sandy Casselman - Press staff.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN – For fans of South Mountain’s Cory M. Coons, hearing the
latest song written and sung by this local musician is as simple as turning on the radio. Coons, who has been writing, recording, and performing music locally for more than 15 years, has just released the single, “Roses Need the Rain,” from his newest album, Here and Now, to radio stations across Canada. Coons’ musical career has gone through several incarnations over the years, beginning with well-received performances as a member of several different teenage bands during his years as a student at Seaway District High School in Iroquois, back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. While Coons has spent a good portion of his musical career as part of a band, most recently as front man for the local cover band Tycoons, he is enjoying his work as a solo artist, and plans to continue on this path for the foreseeable future. When asked about the inspiration for his newest single, Coons said, “I like to write in a way that leaves room for the listener to take on their own interpretation of the story.”However, Coons said, the song essentially tells the story of two young lovers and their experience facing the world together. His style, he said, is a mix of pop, rock, and country with a roots-y, southern-rock element to it. He’s also been told that his music has a bit of a ’70s/’80s flair. According to Coons, hearing one’s song on the radio for the first time is quite exciting, and while he’s looking forward to hearing “Roses Need the Rain” playing on the local stations, his main focus right now is on reaching as many new listeners as possible. Here and Now, which was produced at Soundbox Studios in Kemptville by owner Robert Windsor (Eddy and the Stingrays), is Coons’ third official solo album to date. “I think it gets more exciting with each new release,”he said. “I think you grow as an artist and a writer with the more you create.” As for his future plans, Coons will continue building and fostering the relationships he has created here at home with family, friends, and fans. This, however, doesn’t mean he won’t consider branching out to a wider market if the opportunity presents itself one day. “I love it. As long as I stay true to what I love to do, and not try to be something I’m not… be as real and honest as I can… then everything will work out the way it’s supposed to,” he said. In addition to being heard on the radio, Coons can also be heard playing live at any
number of local venues. For performance dates and locations or to purchase his new single or CD, visit www.corymervincoons.com. - Winchester Press - Sandy Casselman - Press Staff

Every singer songwriter goes through phases of wondering whether the struggle and the sacrifice necessary to make a career out of music are worth the rewards of the work. For true singers, the struggle is insistent but not quite as insistent as the persistent internal need to make music. There is something within the heart of those singers which compels the music to keep coming despite any challenges the singer may face. Cory Mervin Coons is a shining example of a true singer.

Coons began his singing life in his small Canadian hometown, branching out as he grew musically. His singing career spans fifteen years, during which time he has had numerous musical successes, but he has never strayed far from the simplicity of his roots. His lyrics exemplify this, as he sings with a simple nostalgia commemorating a time gone by, a time when simple ideals were enough to satisfy the desires of individual men.

For example, in Crumbs, Coons sings about a father who works all day and into the night and a mother who puts the kids to bed in a town where there’s a morning dew out in the fields and you can smell the pancakes on the grill in a time when you won’t find a lock on my front door. This possibly idealized vision of life is matched with a similar idealized appreciation of love, which is exhibited in "Unanswered". This love song is a blend of country and rock melodies which says that Love’s the silent laughter that rings in your head And true love is still the answer, in your unanswered prayer.

Though he sings about such simple country ideals, Coons does not come across as naive. In fact, he uses the strength of his ideals to support actual change in the world. His most recent success in this venture was to have Crumbs used to help market the Alesse birth control pill, showing that he is not going to shy away from harsh truths despite his hopeful ideals. Similarly, he speaks simply in Faded Glory about the uneasy truth that With war and hate among us / There’s a cry for love and peace. This Canadian may be singing about modern American political issues, but it is almost as if he is speaking simple truths about the state of any society at any rough time in their history. It is almost as though he is timeless.

This sense of timelessness extends to the sound of the music as well. Coons says that his musical influences include the older songs of Elvis Presley and the newer songs of bands like Bon Jovi. In Crumbs, there is a hint of old Aerosmith in the sound of his voice. What rings through all of this music is the sense that these are merely influences affecting his style and not bands that he actually sounds like or makes any attempt to imitate. It seems that he is a singer who knows the solid core of his own sound but isn’t afraid to experiment a little bit here and there to see if another style might augment his own.

MORRISBURG –

Ten years of recording, seemed like a good time to celebrate the work of Cory M. Coons and The Tycoons Band.

Well known locally, Coons is a writer, performer and recording artist, originally from South Mountain.

The CD celebrating the recording efforts of Coons and The Tycoons Band, entitled Retrospective is available at various retail locations throughout the region.

Coons will play a special lunchtime acoustic show at one of those retail locations, The Basket Case in Morrisburg, on Sat., Feb., 13 from about noon until 1 p.m.

Retrospective, has 20 tracks, including one new release, Every Time I Think About You.

Retrospective also includes crowd pleasing tracks like Crumbs and other popular tracks along with different, previously unreleased studio outtakes.

In 10 years, five CDs have been released under the Cory M. Coons and The Tycoons Band titles.

Coons sees Retrospective as a great opportunity for people to pick up his and the group’s best work in one package.

“Each song has a different story to share,” said Coons. “I like to tell stories that touch people.”

Since the work ranges from the intimate nature of acoustics to the showmanship of being part of a band, Coons has worked to showcase both aspects in this Retrospective package.

“This CD is not an end, just a culmination of work,” said Coons.

Looking to the future, He hopes that his work with Gary LaBarr, of Niagara Atlantic Entertainment Group, on his new track will help expand distribution and he said that he may even shoot a video for one of the tracks.

Coons says their style of music is a mix of rock and pop. “I would say southern rock, with a little folk rock.”

In addition to the Feb., 13 lunch hour show, Coons has a number of small events planned. He will be part of the Feb., 20 show at the St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage and has a show planned in March at Boomers Sports Bar in Prescott.

"Local musician and singer/songwriter introduces new CD"

Dated: Wednesday, June 23, 2004.

Cory Mervin Coons (CMC) has for some years been associated with the Tycoons, a group of local lads from the South Mountain area who enjoy playing music. In fact this young man has been the driving force behind the cover band. Now he has taken the big step to a solo career. "I am very excited to be releasing my first solo CD" smiles CMC as we begin our interview. Although not a stranger to studio work, he released the CD titled, "Tycoons" in late 1999, but a renewed excitement and enthusiasm are evident for this solo effort. "The Tycoons sort of moulded themselves into more of a cover outfit (playing other people's songs) playing all the local clubs with your classic rock standards. With the new CD I am certainly more excited because it will be the majority of original material for each show." He goes on to explain that recording began on the new solo CD in January of this year at Little Chicago Studios in Smith's Falls. Produced by Tim Greencorn, Cory hopes to have it ready for release independently in July of this year.
Titled, "From the Ground Up," the official CD release party will be hosted later this summer at a venue in the local area. Keep your ears and eyes open for this announcement and be a part of it...
Members of the CMC band include: Mike Kelly on lead guitar and vocals, Bryan Deruchie on drums and percussion and Francis Thibodeau on bass and vocals. Mike helped with the solo CD, and Cory adamently pays tribute to his song writing skills.
As we speak about the music on the CD, Cory explains that a lot of the songs on disc get back to his roots as he was growing up near South Mountain listening to all kinds of music. He feels there is a bit of accoustic rock and a bit of folk as well as a little blues tossed into the mix. "My style is very melodic, but with an edge that Mike and I like to describe as a "Southern Ontario Sound"...I like to keep things as simple as I can. Sometimes though, I tend to experiment a little," says Cory with a hint of enthusiasm in his tone.
He talks about his relationship with Mike, "I am very proud to have worked with Mike, an Iroquois native who did all the lead guitar work on the CD. He brings a wonderful dynamic to my sound. He did an awesome job helping create the CMC sound. "I hope we can collaborate more in the future, he is a great song writer in his own right and he plays a mean guitar to boot."
The other band members are also featured on the tracks. An added bonus for Iroquois fans is the fact that Mike Anderson of Strings and Things in the Plaza is also featured as part of one of the songs as he plays banjo, a unique addition to the music. Cory tells us his sister-in-law, Michelle Arthurs from Johnstown does some great backup vocals on another song.
Listening to the CD at Cory and his new wife's home on a hot summer evening, it is clear this one is good. The sound drifts across the lawn and it is evident this one could just be what Cory Mervin Coons needs to kick start a solo career in the music business. Writing all the songs for the CD except the one Mike Kelly provided, Cory had ideas he wanted to turn into songs and if "Crumbs," the first song on the CD is an indication of his ability, there is little doubt, about his talent.
Most of his songs tell a story, usually drawing on previous experience and building on them, his work develops over time into what he wants to share. References to "A Strong Pair of Hands" would point to his dad whom he admires. "Faded Glory" has a line, "If you teach your children well, maybe we can live to tell.." gets quite philosophical, be he hastens to say "I am not preaching, just telling tales."
Hints of Southern USA can be detected in lines of songs as can the influences of those he admired as he was growing up: Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Johnny Cash, etc.
A song is included that is dedicated to his mother ("Violet") whom he lost to cancer two and a half years ago and "Unanswered" is dedicated to his wife Leighann, since she inspired him to finish this tune. He categorizes the choruses of some of the songs as melodic folksy and sees his music as hopeful. "I write with hope, not too depressing, trying to remain upbeat in my outlook." Keeping his music flavoured with Canada sounds, he works in bits and pieces from the local area and if you listen carefully you will recognize places and people familiar to you. CDs will be available on Canada Day at the Point as well as at Strings and Things in the Iroquois Plaza.
His enthusiasm is contageous and I can hardly wait for Canada Day when Cory and the Tycoons will be on stage at the Point. Part of the celebration, CMC will debut the solo CD between 2 and 3pm and then later in the evening from 7:30 through 9pm, CMC and the Tycoons will entertain the expected crowd. Upcoming shows this year include the South Mountain Fair Show, on August 20 and the Chesterville fair on August 27. We wish this young man all th - Sandra Lee Johnston - Chieftain Staff Reporter

"South Mountain Musician Goes Solo"

South Mountain recording artist Cory M Coons has just released his first solo CD, entitled From The Ground Up. It's an 11 track CD, of which 10 of the compositions are his own.

The 11th selection was written by his friend, lead guitarist, Mike Kelly, an Iroquois native. Music for the CD was recorded at Little Chicago Studios in Smith Falls.

Coons is branding himself and his original music as CMC, to reflect his full name Cory Mervin Coons. When Coons and his band give a performance featuring only his songs, the group is billed as CMC. The group plays as CMC at festivals and other special occasions.

CMC members include Mike Kelly on lead and rhythm guitar and vocals, Bryan Deruchie on drums and percussion, and Francis Thibodeau on bass and vocals. Other artists included in the recording of From The Ground Up were Mike Anderson, Michelle Arthurs, John Locey and David Moquin.

Some of the band members have also performed as "Tycoons" with Cory when playing more established tunes that others have recorded, mostly from the1970's and 1980's. Even during group performances the band mixes in some original music by Coons. Both CMC, and Tycoons can be found playing at local clubs and fairs.

The band was recently one of the big attractions at the South Mountain Fair. It tends to give high-energy performances, encouraging audience participation. This is actually the second CD Coons has recorded. His first, entitled Tycoons was released in 1999.

Coons, who has been performing since his teen years, classifies his sound as light rock with an acoustic flavor, or southern rock. He said he was influenced greatly by Bon Jovi and John Mellencamp. It's clear that Coons is looking for more than just being part of a cover band that plays other people's music. He is determined to continue writing his own material and is looking forward to collaborating with lead guitarist Mike Kelly on his future compositions. - Winchester Press - Oct. 13, 2004

Then later formed his own Classic-Melodic Rock band “Tycoons”, releasing two independent recordings and performing throughout Eastern Ontario, Northern NY State, and Quebec in the 2000’s.

Cory has amassed more than 350,000 plays on Spotify for his melodic brand of roots-flavored rock. His work with legendary record producer Ron Nevison, has earned him industry recognition from the Los Angeles Music Awards, the Producer’s Choice Honors, The Josie Music Awards, International Singer-Songwriter Association and the Radio Music Awards, among others. With a catalog that boasts several critically-acclaimed full length albums and EPs, as well as a handful of well-received singles since 2004’.

In recent years he released the album "The Long Road Home" in 2018, produced by Multi-Platinum Veteran Music Producer Ron Nevison, (Heart, Bad Company, Damn Yankees, Survivor, Styx, Night Ranger). The album was nominated in 2019 for "Male Album Of The Year" at the "Josie Music Awards", and he also had 4 nominations at the 2020 JMA's, 3 more in 2021, and was nominated at the 2022 JMA event again in two categories, "E.p of the Year", & "Single of the Year" (Americana) for his song Freedom Road. This year, Cory had 5 more nominations once again at the JMA event in Nashville, and most recently took home the 2023 Josie Music Award for Song of the Year (Rock) for the single "Long Hard Rain"!

The single "Leavin" was released early in 2020, and the follow up single "Good Times Gone" in June of 2020, from the same Ep. In December of 2020, Cory released “Burning Bright at Christmas Time”. The enchanting blend of acoustic guitar and sleigh bells captured the spirit of the holiday, and Coons’ melodic sensibilities remain intact with another rootsy release that feels at home next to his finest releases. “Burning Bright” also featured Coons’ then, 6-year-old daughter, Charleigh, on backing vocals, giving the track a real family touch. Another independent single "Far Away" was released in early 2021, which also featured Charleigh Lynn Coons, along with his single "Freedom Road" which dropped in late 2021, and another single was released in July of 2022, "Long Hard Rain". A second CMC Christmas single and cover rendition of the 1987 version of John Mellencamp's "I Saw Mommy Kissin' Santa Claus" was also released just in time for the holidays at the end of 2022, with Charleigh Lynn Coons taking on the lead vocal to close out the track!

Currently in 2023, a brand new 18 song compilation album, (with 2 added bonus Christmas songs on digital platforms, and 1 on Cd), "Across The Great Divide" was released on Feb 10th with MTS Records as well. The music will span the years from 2012-2022 of CMC music.
