On Tuesday night, August 3rd, something happened at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano that seems to happen very often in the music business. Many would think that the music business is so large
that how could somebody keep track of it all, let alone remember people, places, and all those songs out there. But when Michael McDonald showed up to perform his concert to a sold out crowd of 500 people at the cozy and seasoned Coach House, he ran into his opening band, Kumar’s Cosmic View. And with a light of recognition, remembered Ernest Straughter (Cosmic View) from when he was the pianist in Michael McDonald & Patti LaBelle’s hit song from 1986 “On My Own” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsH63qJlIMM

COSMIC VIEW: Cosmic view…. Is Our Spiritual Life Goal: our purpose is to Honor our Teachers / Mentors: Our Legendary Musical ancestors: By holding True to Heartfelt Musical Expressions; 1st by honoring and giving thanks to our mentor Horace Tapscott: As students of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix & Burt Bachrach; and Apprentice of Earth Wind & Fire; We have Heartfelt Moral Certitude, in This Music:
Ernest & Ray Straughter; Lovers of Music from birth the sons of “2” piano players their mom & dad; singers with Nat King Cole; We became serious in music at age 18 & 19 upon joining the Horace Tapscott / Gerald Wilson summer Jazz Camps – Midtown L.A. Henry Grants Music School. In 1974 after Ray S. left Cal Arts performing Arts school to record and produce Azar Lawrence, his 1st Solo recording “Bridge into the New Age” on Fantasy Records. It was then the 1st Cosmic View was Born: COSMIC VIEW*** Cosmic View seeks Healing, Unity & Strength for all: Our unity is about our Vision: On Love & Harmony for all. Our Purpose is to Inspire All Peoples to (joi devri) …. To Live Life to its Fullest: To be a part of Gods Creative Expressions that’s GODS GRACE

As Horace Tapscott expresses in his Memoirs _ The Dark Tree: We want the tree of music to grow into the future thru the youth: as our mentor, Horace Tapscott would have it. What we’ve gained and learned is to be shared with everyone, especially the youth of today so that the music will have a richer future for tomorrow.

Ernest, Ray, Azar & Oscar Brown have performed and written for and with: Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane, Patrice Rushen, Earth Wind & Fire, Pharaoh Sanders, Horace Tapscott, Sun Ra, Gil Evans & Coolio: there is a Transformation and an Magical Experience that occurs at Cosmic view Concerts. Each member is a Spiritual & socially conscious player in the group: and use the stage as a forum: a gathering and expression Divine; of Universal Love: where people say their lives are Transformed by the Positive Effect of Cosmic views Creative Expressions: Cosmic View breaks up the old thinking and gives Inspiration and Hope when They perform; giving Birth to the New Way of Thinking. In his book: “Songs of the Unsung” 2001 …. Horace Tapscott tells us in his own words: That Ernest Straughter was his first assistant Bandleader in the Arkestra; Ernest also wrote and arranged most of the music besides Tapscott.

Ernest is a graduate of U.C.L.A. Motion Picture Entertainment Academy; His professional credits span (40) forty years of accomplishments – as a Musical Director for Aretha Franklin, Fifth Dimensions an has conducted the Gil Evans/Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra at the world famed Montrose Jazz Festival. Ernest’s live performances & record recordings include him playing piano live at Carnegie Hall with Miles Davis. He’s also conducted the N.B.C. Johnny Carson Show Orchestra live from the New York Philharmonic. Ernest studied piano under the tutelage of Joe Sample.

Ray is a graduate of Walt Disney’s Cal-Arts: Majoring in Classical & Popular Composition, Jazz Performance & Orchestral Transcription. Ray’s first professional recording was upon graduating from Disney’s Cal Arts-1974.
