Costello

BandPopPunk

Costello write and perform Indie Style Power-Pop, and deliver it with an attitude that is unmistakebly British. With a stage performance that has been described as "Babyshambles pop via The Clash....but with better songs", we are here to lay claim to the ancient art of the 3 minute pop song.

Biography

Formed late in 2006, in Leyland, near Preston in Lancashire. A powerful, yet extremely melodic three piece band, we perform with fire and skill, and have an armoury of songs that are destined for greatness !!!

Catchy, dance-able bass lines, and super tight drumming, underpinning melodic, indie style, power-pop anthems, gritty, witty lyrics and choruses so catchy, they should come with a health warning….this is Costello.

“They take the British tradition of Davies/Weller/Albarn songcraft, and make their own unique sound.” Chorley FM

Within weeks of performing their first gigs, Costello have found themselves a very large local following, with the strange experience of crowds of people singing along to songs that only sprang to life a few weeks ago !

In mid 2007, our track, “Back to the Noughties” was made demo of the week on the Steve Lamacq Radio 1 show, and since then, things have been very hectic !

Every generation has held the pop song close to its collective hearts, a “pop song” was a thing of beauty, which becomes a soundtrack to your life. This was taken away in the mid nineties, and replaced by auto-tuned computer spew out songs.

We are here to change this.

Listen to the songs.

Back To The Noughties

Written By: J Coleman

There was a time when we all were young,
When all the songs on the radio really meant something,
Always looking for fun,
No more worries, in our heads, until the phone rings

Nineteen sixties dreams,
Evolved into the seventies way of life
Or so it seems….

Although my age is against me now,
I know the lessons that you`ve learned, think about it maybe,
You wont need to ask me how,
E F#
Always seem to say the things, that are relevant to me,

Nineteen Seventies dreams,
Evolved into the eighties way of life
Or so it seems….

All this time thinking of our future, you and I always together,

Greed is good said the man Gecko,
Junkyard bonds setting up the general public,
I`m sorry Maggie but you have to go,
We had our fill of iron hair, and your empty rhetoric
Nineteen nineties and we had it all,
Didn’t know it at the time,
We`re still crap at football,
Maybe its definitely time to sing,
All the voices in my head always think we`re winning

Nineteen eighties dreams,
Evolved into the nineties way of life,
Or so it seems

So the calendar has finally turned,
The time invested in ourselves,
Has got to mean something,
What have we all learned?
Give to get, when all you get`s nothing …..?

Will our noughties dreams,
Evolve into a naughty way of life ?

Its Not Funny Anymore

Written By: J Coleman

When you`re sixteen, you don’t give a damn,
Too busy messing around, trying to be a man,

And when they come up to you, you`re gonna knock em to the floor,
But its not funny anymore

Joke away, at my expense,
Once we laughed together oh…the best of friends,

But now the laughings over, and you`ve become a bore,
And you`re not funny anymore

I guess, this is the end,
Who wants, who needs, that kind of friend?

I`ve had my fill of bullshit and liars,
What gets me is, that they can’t see what their fucking crime is,

And when they come up to you, you want to knock em to the floor,
But its not funny anymore….

The Morning News

Written By: J Coleman

In these hope and glory days,
Never thought about,
Hear the masses shout,
We must be heard,
Thoughts of ignorance,
A bliss that always calls your name,
You`re never quite the same…..

The truth is, I guess you never cared,
Can you see, or have you been impaired ?
What`s black and white and red all over ?

So from Wapping`s favourite sons,
They show you all the puns,
Tell you whats on the TV
Smiling airheads on page 3,
Fleet Street hacks withdraw their swords,
The chairmen of the boards
Can all come out to play
Lonely hearts again today

Time to read the morning news,
Catch the train on time,
8.30 line
And at your desk, you wish your life away,
Influenced by all you read,
Its wrecked your head

The truth is, I guess you never cared,
Can you see, or have you been impaired ?
What`s black and white and red all over ?

So from Wapping`s favourite sons,
They show you all the puns,
Tell you whats on the TV
Smiling airheads on page 3,
Fleet Street hacks withdraw their swords,
The chairmen of the boards
Can all come out to play
Lonely hearts again today

Clever Disguise

Written By: J Coleman

Stop talking to me, like you`ve really got something to say,
For the last time I tell you, get the hell away,
And I know that you will go, back to his bed
And I know that you wont remember, all the things we said
You`re easily led , wrong in the head

And don’t think its what I`m going to do,
I have had my fill, of believing in you
If you go, you go, its for the last time,
You have your heart, you left mine
There is no way, I`ll take you back again

Right from the start, I should have noticed all your signs,
Your half smiling eyes, proved a clever disguise,
From the first time you touched me, electricity,
I fell like a good un, pure transparency, that was it for me,

So where did it end, infatuation doesnt seem like a friend,
Does he love you the way I do ?
From the first time you touched me, electricity,
I fell like a good un, pure transparency, that was it for me,

And don’t think its what I`m going to do,
I have had my fill, of believing in you
If you go, you go, its for the last time,
You have your heart, you left mine
There is no way, I`ll take you back again

Conform Now !

Written By: J Coleman

Conform now, you know you have to,
Conform now, you know you want to,
Conform now, its all you`ll have to show

Tow that line, it really makes sense,
The place that you love, is up there on the fence,
Don’t make waves ever in your life

So what happened to your plans ?
I could never understand,
You took your dreams out for a walk,

And dropped them in the sea,

Conform now, you really want to,

Conform now, you really have to,
Conform now, or you will be erased.

We know your name and we`ve got your number,
Keep in line don’t you ever stumble,
The script is ours….go memorise.

It starts so young, while still at school,
The sharpest box still becomes a tool,
Theres no room for self expression,

So what happened to your plans,
You never really had a chance
You took your dreams out for a walk,
And dropped them in the sea,

Conform now, you really want to,
Conform now, you really have to,
Conform now, or you will be erased.

We know your name and we`ve got your number,
Keep in line don’t you ever stumble,
The script is ours….go memorise.

Conform now, you really want to,
Conform now, you really have to,
Conform now, or you will be erased.

Living The Lie

Written By: J Coleman

So successful, all the years you wasted,
Where did it go ?
Fame and fortune, and all the things you`ve tasted,
How could you know ?

First you said it wasn’t that way , and everything fell into place,
I realise now and you demonstrated how, by putting this look on my face,
So you better listen up and make an effort to try and stop,

Living the lie
Living the lie
Don’t ask me why,
You`re living the lie,

Money grabbing ,socially quite awkward,
I know your sort
You think you know it all you stupid loser,
You act without a thought.

And now your sussed I`ve bubbled your plan,
The smile drains away from your face,
The cash that you earned, and the lessons you learned, might as be out there in space.
So you better listen up and make an effort to try and stop

Living The Lie

The Ballad of Gordon Bennett

Written By: J Coleman

So, tell me how was your day ?
Did you stand up and tell them,
What you meant to say ?
Or did your nerves disappoint you, and send you red,
Back home too early, the promise of an early bed ?

Gordon, what were you thinking of ?
Did you really expect, to find your one true love ?
Take this experience, cos its all you get,
You missed your chance, Mr Gordon Bennett

Gordon Bennett, where will you go now ?
You got from 12 to 40 in record time,
Turbos on your clock, but not on mine.

Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Bennett.
Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Bennett.
Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Bennett.
Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Gordy, Bennett.
Gordon Bennett, we`ve messed it up now

Sunshine, starts another day,
Confidence rises, morning glory play,
If you cant get it right now, you never will,
Legs may shake, but you’d better keep still.
