Bio

While most bands sit complacently waiting for something to happen, Counterbalance are actively seeking new opportunities and anticipating something incredible.

The band began with childhood friends Jeremy Rich (vocals) and Jeremy Goldberg (guitar) playing coffee houses acoustically. Different band members were introduced and dismissed, until the introduction through a mutual friend of Rob Burrow (formerly of “Spyll”) to play drums, creating an instant bond. The bass slot however, still remained vacant. Within two months since the origin of Counterbalance in December 2000, fourteen songs were written. When the decision came through to record the demo E.P. “Into the Storm” with Small Dog Studios in Kitchener, Jeremy Rich turned to friend and bassist, Dave Liscombe to play on the CD (both had previously played together in a band called “Sinkhole”). However, after laying down the bass tracks, Dave was hooked. The band was then complete.

Sadly, a year after the band was formed, Dave felt the drive to succeed and to accept a position which would land him at the other end of the country. The guys were sad to see him go, and it actually took six months to find someone to fill his shoes, but the time finally came, with a fellow named Kris Somers. The band was now complete. Again.

Counterbalance are expecting their albums to capture the spirit and emotions of their musical influences. To follow in the footsteps of their idols (Pearl Jam, Tool, Incubus, Silverchair and Finger Eleven to name a few), while remaining a clearly unique musical presence is their number one goal.

Band members bring diverse musical backgrounds to the band. The performing history of all members includes previous performances with Canadian acts such as Econoline Crush, Finger Eleven and hHead.

Last year they were one of three finalists in a contest hosted by www.beer.com entitled “Jam with Pam”. Not only was their song “Nonsense” number one with voters to the web site, Pamela Anderson chose Counterbalance out of the top six bands as her personal “Pam’s Pick” for April. This brought extensive media attention to the band (i.e. CBC, National Post).

With the drive to succeed, rigorous practice schedules and the talent and creativity to back up their grand designs, Counterbalance is prepared to be catapulted “Into the Storm".
