"Rap n****s are superheroes”, Cortez says in a recent interview with VSLS TV. He speaks on how he feels obligated to carry the torch for his family all while minding his influence. You see, Coupe Cortez grew up on the Southside in a small Chatham home that produced big hit music acts. His uncle Arrowstar was a rapper/producer in the legendary Chicago group The Go-Getters, which also included Kanye West and GLC. Coupe sights his days around the group as his birth to hip hop, often still receiving advice on his own career from the OGs. Grit and beauty is the best way to describe Coupe Cortez as an artist. His two most recent projects make perfect sense of the description. First in the 5 track EP titled “CREATURE” Coupe gives his twisted edgy take on being a Chicago creative, over super producer Dj L drill drums. Songs like Dead Rapper where Cortez chants “they want to see ya favorite rapper dead” give credence on what it’s like being an Artist that’s forced to create through the madness. On his most recent Album “TABLOID” Cortez adds to his story of trying to find creative peace through some of the tragedies associated with being a Chicago rapper, but this time having the added struggle of local fame. Lyrics like “don’t exploit me/swear don’t nothing matter keep my business off the camera” from the song WSHH , further capture the contradicting paranoia that Coupe Cortez creates with to continuously bring dope hit music.
