Texas Platters
By David Lynch

Mr. Brown
Boderation (Coinhead)

Hardcore reggae fans may recognize the name Mr. Brown, the title of an early Wailers track. Boderation, meanwhile – "troubles" – is both a lyric in that song and a Bunny Wailer cut. While this Austin outfit doesn't quite reach those lofty heights here, these dozen reggae/dancehall/dub cuts compose an irie diary. Mr. Brown also refers to singer/strummer Kris Brown, who leads this riddim big band, with Shelley King and Leeann Atherton on vox, through his original tunes. Courtney Audain (Tribe 13, Timbuk 3) is a key ingredient in the success of this debut, offering up his formidable bass skills, along with recording, mixing, producing, and mastering the platter from his Coinhead Studios in Windsor Park. The aural gestalt is three-dimensional (live horns!) with ample amounts of headphone candy like the opening title track. Overall, songs may not possess the gravity of the classics, but lyrics are conscious, spiritual even ("Don't Stray Far").

"Fuze"

COURTNEY AUDAIN

Fuze (Coinhead)

Fuze is the self-produced album by Austinite Courtney Audain. The title is appropriate because each of the 11 well-produced original tracks drip with Audain's ability to seamlessly blend reggae, soul, R&B, blues and other styles into his own signature sound. The irie-laden Fuze also signifies Audain's genius in hosting musical friends to enhance the work, such as the gorgeous flamenco intro and outro by guitarist Teye in "The Longest Years," a tune that also features Charlie and Will Sexton, or the Jimmy Cliff-like version of Lennon and McCartney's "We Can Work It Out," replete with powerful vocal gesturing by Austin's own MC Overlord. Suffering at times from lyrical repetition, the righteously superfine Prince-y groove of "Born to Be a Star" is well-complemented by Malford Milligan's sweet soul backing vocals. More? "Let Our Love Grow" and "Give Love a Try" bring to mind Lenny Kravitz's Let Love Rule. Audain, who sings and plays at least seven instruments on Fuze, is surprisingly humble and credits God for his talent. In less-developed hands, these many influences and contributions might result in a hodgepodge of samples and examples, but Fuze wins as a uniquely accomplished debut.

"Girly Action"

By MARGARET MOSER
"Another luminous offering comes from Kathy Smock with Sweet Nothing. It's as good a rock debut as Mina Mauldin's SuperPsychoticQueen last year, but layered more percussively. No surprise there, as Austin percussive dynamo Courtney Audain produced and arranged the album, yet it's Smock's songs that really shine; she wrote or co-wrote all 12. Standouts include "I'm Falling Down"; "Shoe Song," with its Southern rock feel; and the title track, all of which signal that Smock is something else."

FUZE
Just as life is a collection of many experiences and moments in time, the songs on this album give you a unique glimpse into Audain's passions, spiritual beliefs and his searching soul. His refusal to be pigeonholed by any single musical style has resulted in a tasteful disk that combines power pop and R & B with reggae and soul, along with plenty of stylish colors and nuances gained throughout his lifelong musical career.

Fuze is a stunning display of Audain's prowess as a songwriter, producer, singer and versatile musician. The combinations and changes of musical directions succeed in keeping the listener pleasantly off guard and wondering which persona is lurking around the next bend. Truly, this is music for lovers of sound and form.

Courtney Audain is the Entreproducer of Coinhead Media Studios. In addition to his impressive musical career, Courtney has over 20 years experience as a sound engineer and producer.
