"Have you heard..."

1st April 2009

Can you please give us your full name, the name of your band, and the instrument you play?
courtney barnett. i play guitar and the singing.

What do you think is your band’s greatest strength?
probably the drummer

What was your worst gig ever and why?
years ago...the "venue" was like a concrete cell, all the furniture was made from concrete and i sounded like reverby concrete. my support act was a four-year-old with a ukulele (he was really good). the champagne tasted like vinegar. and then, the last guy who played, took all our money.

If you could time travel back to any gig in history which would it be and why?
folsom prison, johnny cash.

What movie do you think your music would best accompany and why?
some sort of comfortable medium between something like "mermaids" with cher and something a bit fucked up like "natural born killers"

What are your plans for the immediate future? And the rest of the year?
immediate future: i have to clean the house. rest of the year: finish recording my EP. find a house larger than a milk crate but cheaper than a mortgage.

What is your favourite song lyric and why?
"na na na na na na na na na na na she's got the look." catchy

Favourite “pick me up for a big night” drink?
cascade pale ale. because it's from where i'm from.

Favourite hangover cure?
a spiced up bloody mary will do it. and if i still have taste buds maybe field mushrooms with poached eggs and goats cheese from Arcadia.

When and where is your next gig?
wednesday 8 april @ the drunken poet 8pm

"Wine, Whiskey, Women"

8th April 2009

As the "wine, whiskey, women" saga continues at the Drunken Poet, Courtney Barnett will be gracing the stage on wednesday the 8th of april at 8pm. Not as soppy as your everyday folk singer and minus the misery of the blues, her lyrics are soaked in soul with enough over-exaggerated metaphors to keep every english teacher satisfied. Her honest voice and modern charm are only amplified by the growling, percussive guitar playing that will take your breath away. Don't miss this show! - Inpress Magazine

Bio

based in melbourne, courtney barnett plays guitar and sings along. she writes coke-bottle summertime pop. courtney tried to grow a herb garden this year but doesn’t like to talk about the outcome.

oliver mestitz plays the percussioned instruments and hums along. sometimes he sings and/or harmonises and when he does it’s like angels bathing in sweet morning mildew. on top of that, he is a rhythm fiend and award-winning bread maker. sometimes he dabbles in fruit loaf.

the mood is light-hearted bordering on semi-serious, and the music is undeniably intriguing. they deliver seductive tones, infectious melodies and it's all tied together in a sort of song structure.

together they whisk up a mean toe-tappin, knee-slappin version of a pop song with an intensity that seems effortless. receiving airplay on triple j radio, radar radio, triple m and charting high on triple j unearthed, this is music to fly kites, drink soda, and do handstands to.
