"Song of the Week: This Local Artist's Drake Cover You Have to Hear"

Tom Freeman, who records under the pseudonym Covey, is an English-born indie artist who attended Berklee College of Music here in Boston. After growing up in multiple countries – from England to Indonesia to China – and developing his personal sound, Freeman now resides in the US where he's currently building his career as a musician. We came across his slowed-down take on Drake's hit, "Hold On, We're Going Home," and the intimate video shows Freeman at work in the studio, demonstrating his acoustic strength.

Watch the video below, and continue reading to hear more about Covey from Freeman himself. - Hilary Milnes - Staff Writer, BostInno

"The Deli Magazine's New England Band of the Month"

Covey’s “Comes and Goes” starts off with handclaps and reversed guitars before the singer’s silky voice takes the spotlight. The song is a soft, introspective number; “life only bruises those who want to spend theirs alone,” he remarks on the bridge. The song reaches a perfect conclusion with the deep bass and tinny bell of its final understated chorus. Last month’s cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” proves the singer a versatile one as well. Before attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music, the London native spent time in Indonesia and Hong Kong, which he credits to his unique sound. If you like what you hear, catch Covey at The Red Room @ Cafe 939 at the singer’s alma mater on May 14. – Jake Reed, @jakejreed - Jake Reed - The Deli Magazine

"Listen to Covey's Acoustic Cover of Drake’s “Hold on, We’re Going Home”"

If you are looking to add a new acoustic artist to your music library then you might want to check out the indie artist known as Covey. He’s brand new to the online music scene, but he’s already pushing out some great jams. Not that long ago he released the music video for his single “Comes And Goes,” and yesterday he premiered an acoustic cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” You can stream that cover by taking a look below the jump.

"A Talk With Covey"

Growing up did you play in a band?
Yeah, I played in a couple of bands throughout high school and so did Dillon. I played in mainly rock projects and Dillon did all sorts ranging from Hip Hop to blues.

How did the band members meet each other?
Everyone we have had play in the band we have met through Berklee. Dillon was my roommate for 4 years so that set a solid foundation for us to continue working together on all this music.

What was the meaning behind your song ‘Stranger’?
I wrote it when I had just come out of a rough place, not taking care of myself and simply neglecting things I needed to be doing to keep myself happy. I felt like I had become someone so far removed from who I used to be that I felt like a stranger to myself. I put some people close to me through a rough time during it all and the song was my way of acknowledging that I know that wasn’t who I really am.

Describe the process of writing and making music as a band?
I usually go ahead and write/record the outline to a song with melody, chords etc and then Dillon will head over and we will finish the songs off together adding drums, touching up lyrics and anything else we can think of really. Then we send off the track 70% done to a producer called Andrew Seltzer out in NY and he cleans it up, and adds the cherry on top.

What was your inspiration in your music video, “Comes and Goes”?
I really like Bon Iver’s videos and some of them tend to have a theme of travel. Moving from one point to another. Which i thought worked very well with the song. We didn’t plan out a whole story, we just kind of drove out to new Hampshire with cinematographer Lauren Foley and she made it all purty and stuff. - C-Heads Magazine

"Sunshine and Snow: Covey and Weather"

When local indie folk stars Covey swung into the room with upbeat, foot-tapping tunes, the crowd pushed forward as if drawn to the warmth in their songs. The laid-back “Comes and Goes” was a welcome respite from the harsh weather outdoors; gentle acoustic guitars conjured up visions of frolicking in a sunny meadow, banishing any thoughts of the howling winter wind as people swayed back and forth. The set was relaxed, natural, and infectiously uplifting. Fresh tracks from their upcoming EP sounded polished but not stale as the band played one of their first shows since being in the studio all winter. - Sound of Boston

"Song of the Week: Comes and Goes by Covey"

Now that winter has officially arrived the need for some snuggle worthy tunes has arisen, ‘Comes and Goes’ by British singer songwriter Covey is the perfect listen. With his warm and soothing vocals and charming good looks, Covey is slowly starting to stand out in the crowded indie music scene. This track has a rich sound and upbeat rhythm and really does warm your soul as you listen. You will get lost in the lyrics and be transported somewhere special.

With experiences growing up all over the world, it is clear Covey has a unique maturity and array of influences in his voice, working together beautifully and allowing for a powerful sound to shine through.

"Covering Covey: Single Premiere + Interview With Tom Freeman"

He’s lived in England, Indonesia, Hong Kong and now Boston, where Covey was formed and reformed. Tom Freeman is no stranger to change, but in his new song “Stranger,” he is to himself. It’s the first single off Covey’s upcoming EP, which Freeman is taking on without his six former bandmates. The local indie project is now a solo one, where songwriting and vision purposes above all else.

We spoke with Freeman by wire about downsizing his group—and what that means for Covey moving forward. He also gave us some insight about Berklee dynamics and the not-so-slow death of Mumford & Sons. Check out the interview below alongside the premiere of “Stranger.” - Allston Pudding

A songwriter for 9 years, Freeman has lived in many places throughout his life including England, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. Moving from place to place caused him to explore a wide breadth of cultures and influenced him artistically. This breadth of experience was implemented into his music at an early age, and lead to experimentation with different genres such as folk, rock, indie, and electronic. Freeman eventually found a voice and a home in Boston, Massachusetts while attending Berklee College of Music, where the Covey project was born.

Ultimately influenced by a wide variety of genres, Covey’s sound has a distinct personality. Folky lyrical driven songwriting is complimented by textures of synth and distorted guitar. As described by Sound of Boston, the vocals are “relaxed, natural, and infectiously uplifting”. Musical influences range from artists such as Ben Howard, Youth Lagoon, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

Covey has been featured on the BIRN radio network, and online publications such as Under The Gun Review, C-Heads Magazine, and Allston Pudding. Their premier track “Comes and Goes” has won BostInno’s “Song of the Week”, “New England Band of the Month” feature on Deli Magazine, and was recently featured in an national Expedia commercial.

Only in its third year, Covey has opened for national touring artists such as Hoizer, The Last Bison, High As A Kite, Gabriel Kahane, Lighthouse And The Whaler, Soak and has played across the Northeast. Look for Covey’s debut album, in the fall of 2017 on Spotify, Bandcamp, and iTunes.
