"Daily Disc: Creature, No Sleep At All"

No Sleep At All,
Creature
Universal

Out of the sea of Montreal’s indie-rock next-big-things arises a revelation: an air-tight, dance-rock party band ready to take over the world. Creature has been ready for its close-up for nearly three years, so it’s a delight to see the band finally put its chips on the table with this pumping, bumping and super-fun debut. Think B-52s, Talking Heads, Metric at its grooviest and Blondie. Think pop art, power-pop, old-school hip-hop, all laid over a driving rock bottom. The party is, as the album title implies, non-stop. There are no lulls, and there is no lazy groove-riding. Creature is a pop band first -- and this album pops! T’Cha Dunlevy, Canwest News Service - National Post

"The Gazette, 2007 Bands to watch"

« Creature. If there is any justice, dynamic dance-rock foursome Creature will be the next Montreal band to break it big. »
- T’Cha Dunlevy, The Gazette

"CRITIQUE DE VOIR"

ARTICLE - 6 mars 2008
Olivier Robillard-Laveaux

"Brooklyn Vegan"

« Montreal dance-punk at its finest. Long before The Arcade Fire and The Stills came out of here, Montreal had a well know DJ/House scene. Creature bridges the gap between these two genres. »
- Brooklyn Vegan

"Creature - from Montreal, MP3, video, Tour Dates (SXSW)"

I spoke of Creature in last year's Montreal/SXSW feature, but for those not in the know, definitely check them out now. Buzz for their upcoming album No Sleep At All has reached critical mass, and is getting great pre-release reviews. Ecstatic dance-punk with a heavy house bounce. Grab the MP3 above. Check out a video and tour dates below.... - Brooklyn Vegan

"Boston Globe (SXSW 2007 review)"

« Creature from Montreal was inventive and ecstatic. The two-gal. two-guy combo also favored cowbell but it in service of old school rapping, day-glo melodies, punk energy, and danceable tomfoolery. It was like the B-52’s jamming with the Sugarhill Gang. »
- Boston Globe

"Thomas Burgel, Les Inrocks, Octobre 2007"

« Explosif et sexy, pop et élastique, réponse aux !!! ou à The Raptures. »
- Les Inrocks, Octobre 2007

"SXSW 2007 Spotlight: Creature"

I caught these guys at the Montreal Artists' Showcase, where Les Breastfeeders was headlining, and I have to say that Creature is a riot. And when I say riot, I mean riot in the silly euphemistic way that people like David Cross and Bobby Torrance (the kid in your third-grade class who made all the bodily function jokes) are a riot, and not in the "Oh my, here comes the tear gas!" kind of riot, which seemed dangerously close to happening outside, as it seemed like there was going to be a clash between evangelists and the supporters of Leslie Cochran, Austin's famous resident crossdressing vagrant (more on that later). But I digress.

If the members of Missing Persons were long-lost cousins of the Family Stone, and they had their first big reunion at a disco, you'd have Creature. It's not overly punk rock, but it has enough beefy disco grooves and silly funked-out B-52s-styled moments that you're soon shaking your groove thing too much to realize how unpunk you're being.

Check out the band's myspace site and commence with the jiggling. When you're done there, the band's records are available at Sugartune.

Bio

Creature joined forces in 2005 when Kim Ho, Sid-Z, and Lisa Ivvy experienced a potent chemistry they hadn’t felt in previous bands. Their mission: To chew you up and spit you out. Their self-produced debut album, No Sleep at All, was a liberating, hook-heavy record that impressed the brass at Universal, who signed them on the spot. But they weren’t the only ones impressed with Creature’s fresh sound. The Queen of New Wave herself, Debbie Harry of Blondie, called the band “fantastic” after catching their show in New York, just one of many stops on a tour that saw them travel the world.
On the back of hits like the punch-drunk knockout, “Who’s Hot Who’s Not,” No Sleep was a sensation in Europe, Mexico, and Canada, culminating in a 2009 Juno nomination for Pop Album of the Year. Finally, when there was no stage left unplayed and no breast left unsigned, the road-weary band (you try taking 11 plane rides in 14 days) returned to their Montreal lair and began planting the seeds for their second album.
Though the experience of producing their debut album was one they’ll never forget, Creature knew that on this record, they had to take it up a notch. They sent six new demos to their dream-collaborator, legendary producer Stephen Hague (New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Blur, Peter Gabriel), who was so taken by their sound, he had them on the first plane to England. It was the summer of 2010, and Creature found themselves recording with Hague in the notorious SARM Studios, where Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, and Madonna had laid down tracks before them. Though the recording process was heavy and damn near broke their backs, it was worth it.
Sick Imagination is Creature’s sophomore album, expanding on the playful power pop of No Sleep with tracks like the pulsating “So High,” and the controversial, “Prom Prom,” whose radio-ready chorus (“It’s prom prom and you’re a lesbian”) has artists eager to land the first remix. With Stephen Hague’s trademark flourishes littered throughout the record, this is Creature at their most robust. If No Sleep was their introduction to the world, Sick Imagination is their statement.
Their EP called No More Pretending contains 3 songs from Sick Imagination along with 3 remixes by hot DJs, including Cherry Boom Boom. It has garnered serious US and UK label interest, and Rich Isaacson, NYC-based manager of Mika, and the brain behind Wu Tang clan, now manages them with the help of Luc Vergier in England.
