"Cris Cuddy--The Planet--Australian National Radio--Doug Spencer"

Cris Cuddy
Friday 26 March 2004
Presented by Doug Spencer
Audio of The Planet is available for one week after broadcast.
Visit our index of playlists and audio.
Summary:

'Tortured-with-a-twist-honky-soul-twang' is one description (Glenn O’Brien’s, in Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine) of Canadian songster Cris Cuddy. He keeps good company: guitarists Albert Lee & Andrew Hardin & multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin are among the players on Cuddy’s new CD. Keep The Change is the title on the front. Nowhere Town says the back: yes, it's a double-album of original songs. Cuddy (alias – in other musical circumstances – 'Jeremy Dormouse' & 'Max Mouse') is sardonic but definitely not heartless. Reviewer Jeremy Searle greeted his latest offering as 'the kind of wonderful sprawl Ryan Adams might have made if he wasn’t busy pissing his talent away trying to be a rock star.'

"Cris Cuddy "Diamond Shine""

Feb. 15, 2011
Cris Cuddy Diamond Shine
Reviews FOLK & COUNTRY By Kerry Doole
Country-folk singer/songwriter Cuddy's background includes folk band Jeremy Dormouse and roots-rockers Max Mouse and the Gorillas, and he has been receiving accolades for his solo work. That will continue with this, his third solo album. A gifted songwriter, he has had tunes covered by Prairie Oyster, Mickey Newbury, and Tracy Prescott-Brown, and those talents are on full display here. Such perennial themes as drinking, Cadillacs and freight trains are tackled in a fresh and convincing way. "I'm A Cadillac" has something of a John Hiatt feel, while "Long And Lonesome Old Freight Train" (covered by Prairie Oyster on their One Kiss CD) shines here too. The Oyster's ace guitarist Keith Glass and Murray McLauchlan's bassist Dennis Pendrith are able accompanists, joined by special guests Denis Keldie, Emory Lester and Cam MacInnes. Cuddy's voice is a versatile instrument, neatly matching the variety of his tunes that range from sweet ballads like "Lucky Charm" and "Blue Was The Color" to the rousing "Live For Today." The closing tune, "One For Nick," is a sweet instrumental homage to Nick Drake, not the most obvious influence for a country songsmith. Cuddy uses a few co-writers, including Nashville songwriters Sharon Anderson and Peter Cronin and, on three songs, bluegrass veteran Tom McCreight (Silverbirch). An album worthy of attention.

Bio

HISTORY
Cris Cuddy's first recording was with folk group “Jeremy Dormouse” (www.jeremydormouse.com)
The LP is a collector’s item, considered by Ian Tamblyn to be the first independent Canadian folk record and is re- released on vinyl and cd.
He later became the leader of popular Canadian indie roots-rockers Max Mouse and the Gorillas (www.maxmouse.net), whose “Reggae Love” was a summer hit on Q107 once upon a time.
The initial EP was described by Glenn O’Brien in Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine as “Tortured-with-a-twist-honkey-soul-twang”.
Their ranks have included such stellar talents as Dennis Delorme (Prairie Oyster), producer/jazzer Tony Quarrington (CBC,Joe Hall, W.P. Bennett), Roly Platt (Canadian Blues Legend) and Hugh MacMillan (Spirit of the West) and they still perform regularly in dance/concert venues.

PROJECTS
First solo project was “Come Along Carmelita” (“I don't know where it came from. I only know it's so good I don't care” : David Pilot, Rockzilla ), which features friend and multi-instrumentalists Fats Kaplin (Tom Russell Band, Kevin Welch/Keiran Kane), Don Rooke (the Henry’s, Mary Margaret O’Hara), Rusty McCarthy (M.M.O’H), Al Cross (Big Sugar) and George Meanwell (Quartetto Gelato).
Second solo project, a double CD “Keep the Change / Nowhere Town” “This double album is the kind of wonderful sprawl Ryan Adams might have made if…(Americana UK)” was produced by Tom Russell’s guitarist/sidekick Andrew Hardin and Nashville’s George Bradfute (Paul Burch, Richard Bennett, Webb Wilder)
It also features Fats Kaplin, legendary guitarist Albert Lee, and the great Gene Taylor (Fabulous Thunderbirds) on piano along with Keith Glass and Joan Besen (Prairie Oyster) and Kevin Breit (Norah Jones).

SONGWRITING
In addition to his own critically-acclaimed projects, Cuddy has contributed songs to albums by fellow Canadians Tracy Prescott-Brown and Juno perennial award winners Prairie Oyster who have recorded his “Tom Cat” on cd and also in a video version and also “Long and Lonesome Old Freight Train” for their new “One Kiss” CD. Cuddy’s own version is featured on the new cd.
Cuddy's mentor, songwriting great Mickey Newbury, chose a selection from the “Come Along Carmelita” cd (which he loved) for inclusion as a segue on his masterful “Long Road Home”.
Has recorded in Nashville with legendary producer/Americana Lifetime Honoree Brian Ahern (Emmylou,Johnny Cash) who described Cris’s style as “Elvis Costello meets Van Morrison”
