Cristen Grey and the Moving Dunes

Cristen Grey and the Moving Dunes

 Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
BandRockAdult Contemporary

Acoustic-gritty guitars mixed with Coldplayesque orchestrations, an edgy sultry alto female vocal make this adult contemporary band a no-brainer guaranteed to hook any listener from baby boomer to gen x and y alike. Sounds like Classic Heart meets Lucinda Williams meets Coldplay, yeah kinda crazy.

A veteran musician with a touring history, Cristen opened up for the likes of Quiet Riot, Cinderella, Missing Persons and a few other Glam bands during the late eighties as a rhythm and lead guitarist for the regionally successful metal band All Eyes. Under the auspices of All Eyes she flourished as a songwriter and artist paving the way for her most recent incarnation as Cristen Grey and the Moving Dunes.

An award winning writer and producer in his own right, Brian Widger who co-produced the bands most recent CD entitled 10,000 Things allied with Cristen to help form the band and since then Cristen Grey and the Moving Dunes have demonstrated a superlative talent for blending adult contemporary rock with everything from americana and blues, to metal-tinged power ballads.

Not only can they perform as a fully electrified band with up to seven pieces, they also can incrementally reduce down to an acoustic duet.

Their newest release entitled 10,000 Things reflects the flow of unique life experiences and the themes that tie us togetherfear, love, joy and sorrow and how we manage to somehow draw the resiliency needed to pick ourselves up when we weve hit the ground hard. Grey's smoky alto voice gives her a hard rock feel, while acoustic guitars soften the sound, taking the dullness out of adult contemporary. Drawing from a myriad of influences, a few such as Classic Heart to Sheryl Crow, these influences are but one component of irresistible rock adult contemporary laced with the bittersweet lyrical true-grit of life experience perfectly reflected in this current release.

Over the past few years, many of their songs have received recognition from the New Mexico Music Awards: Absolute and So Much Better were awarded Best Rock-Adult Contemporary Song in 2007 and 2008 respectively, also 2009 garnered a nomination for Bad Emotion under the Mainstream-Rock Category and 2010 garnered nominations for Best Pop CD for 10,000 Things and Rock Bottom under the Pop category; all of which were produced and engineered by Cristen Grey and Brian Widger.

Cristen Grey and the Moving Dunes have performed over the past few years at festivals such as Thirsty Ear Festival (on the bill with artists such as Keb Mo, Bela Fleck and Steel Pulse) and at local hotspots such as the Santa Fe Sol, Cowgirl Hall of Fame, El Paseo, Burts Tiki Lounge, Launchpad and El Rey Theatre just to name a few.

Lyrics

Absolute

Written By: Cristen Grey

The darkness takes it’s time
It arrives too slow
But when it comes it
doesn’t want to go

It’s only in this light
the dim truth shines so bright

I see it, it’s blinding
No mistake no substitute
I feel it, it’s binding
your absence is absolute

It’s paid in full now
I reap what I sow
No need to tell me
what I already know

That I’m to blame somehow
I own it it’s mine now

I see it, it’s blinding
No mistake no substitute
I feel it, it’s binding
My regret is absolute

I see it, I face it every day
I feel it, the love you took away

It’s absolute, absolute, absolute
it’s gone

Stir up a swarm

Written By: Cristen Grey

Here I am again, I recognize the scenery
It’s a place I know well
and it justa, isn’t pretty
‘Cause pretty is as pretty does, so I’ve been told
And my reflection is showing me, this situations old

Oh I try, and oh try
I try with all my heart to do good by you
Oh I try, never meant cause you harm
But words aren’t always coated with honey they can stir up a swarm

I swear I’ll get it right, though I wish it were today
I would take back every word
say things the right way
Do everything the way I should show I’ve learned the lessons well
But my head is thicker than the skin I’m in and puts us both thru hell

And oh I try, and oh try
try with all my heart to do good by you
Oh I try, never meant cause you harm
But words aren’t always coated with honey they can stir up a swarm

They say it takes two to tango
And sometimes we have two left feet
But I believe, that love can, heal us
They say practice makes perfect, if we keep on dancing we won’t miss a beat

And oh we try, and oh we try
we try with all my hearts, to do all the good we can
Oh we try, we never mean no you harm
But words aren’t always coated with honey they can stir up a swarm
But words aren’t always coated with honey they can stir up a swarm

Rock Bottom

Written By: Cristen Grey

I tore up all your pictures, except the one I keep hidden
Down in the bottom drawer of the desk I sit in
I tell myself I’m not in hell, hiding my disappointment well
I gather my thoughts as I walk out the door

Oh tell me am I there yet
Oh will it be hard and cold, you bet
Oh when I hit rock bottom

I see you out in the street you give a strangers smile
Your attempt at a retreat lingers for awhile
You say that it’s getting late, seeing me was really great
So we feign indifference as we both go

Oh tell me am I there yet
Oh will it be hard and cold, you bet
Oh when I hit rock bottom

Waiting at the intersection
Turning my head one direction
Stepping out in front of you
Knowing damn well what you could do
Still today if you asked me to
I’d do anything to be next to you
I’d, follow you underground
I’d jump off a cliff and never look down

Oh tell me am I there yet
Oh will it be hard and cold, you bet
Oh when I hit rock bottom

I tore up all your pictures, except the one I keep hidden
Down in the bottom drawer of the desk I sit in
I tell myself I’m not insane even though I play this game
I ignore the danger sign as I walk by

Oh tell me am I there yet
Oh will it be hard and cold, you bet
Oh when I hit rock bottom

Oh tell me am I there yet
Oh will it be hard and cold, you bet
Oh when I hit rock bottom

So much better

Written By: Cristen Grey

Feeling worn and drawn out
like this drive
the trees blur passed the emptiness comes alive
every time I start to feel this way
I think of you
that's all I ever have to do

almost home that's where I want to be
where my eyes behold the truth of possibility
I breath in deep then I breath out the day

let if flow
I let it be let it go
'cause this is what I know

I know that you, you know that I
we both know that we are forever
I know that you, you feel it too
with each other, life is so much better

the simple things I tend to forget
the taste of rain, splendor of a sunset
there's one thing I easily recall
and that's your smile
it can linger there for a while

the glass of wine touches your lips
the music plays, the waiter collects his tip
you laugh and I almost start to cry

I guess it's just
my heart can feel a bit too much
with you sitting by my side

I know that you, you know that I
we both know that we are forever
I know that you, you feel it too
with each other, life is so much better

there are days, when we both know
we fall below, it's less than perfect
we often disagree, we can argue endlessly, but there's no place
I'd rather be

I know that you, you feel it too
with each other, life is so much better

I know that you, you know that I
we both know that we are forever
I know that you, you feel it too
with each other, life is so much better

God Drove by in a Big Limousine

Written By: Cristen Grey

God drove by in a big limousine
He said to me you were born to sing
The sky shown bright then I knew everything would be alright

Woo woo who, woo who who, Woo woo who, woo who who

The next day I was in a swimming pool
There were birds and dogs and a seagull too
That’s when I knew I was, born into my life anew

Woo woo who, woo who who, Woo woo who, woo who who

God drove by in a big limousine
He said I give to you the music scene
And now I know music can save your soul

Woo woo who, woo who who, Woo woo who, woo who who

Ah it can save your
ah it can save your
Now I know it can save your soul
Music can music can save your soul

Bad Emotion

Written By: Crsiten Grey

You have to admit
We were the perfect fit
Leather lined with fur
A sleek overture

We were the envy
Of every one we’d see
Now look what we’ve become

Bad emotion, bad emotion, bad emotion

Daggers in the air
No haven from despair
A fatal metaphor
Is hangin’ on my door
I hear the words you’ve said
I’m like the living dead
Feeding on some

Bad emotion, bad emotion, bad emotion

You used to look so good (you know you would)
Like vintage Hollywood (hot)
You were my paramour (I always wanted more)
A carnal carnivore
But now it’s just as well
We’re both living hell
Now we’re both running from

Bad emotion, bad emotion, bad emotion
Bad emotion, bad emotion, bad emotion
