By now Kalamazoo's Crossroads Blues Band and 40 of its closet friends should be settled in Memphis, Tenn., as the band prepares to compete against 100 blues bands from around the world in the 24th International Blues Challenge, a competition of unsigned blues bands.
Front man Eddie "Blue" Lester said that this is the band's third time participating in the event and he likes the band's chances this time. Lester said the band and about 40 people from around southwest Michigan rented a bus for the trip to the contest. The winner gets $1500 and 20 hours of recording time and a story in BluesWax magizine as well as other prizes.

Crossroads members come from very different musical backgrounds, but when they are on stage together, they are a show and they are tight. The core of the band has been together for over 12 years. The members of the band are Fuego Fernandez, drummer, who adds color and rhythm to the music, Eddie “Blue” Lester, saxophonist/vocalist, a very engaging entertainer, who has a love affair with the music and the people. Dave Allemang, guitarist/vocalist, very technically sound, who oozes taste and soul, and Melvin English, bassist, who adds the foundation for the harmonic structure. The front line sings and we do covers that are not commonly done but are very unique and fun.
