"the outcome of misery/album review"

Cry Havoc just might be your new favorite band. Even though, chances are you've never heard of them. But that will change soon -- The Outcome of Misery, the band's ferocious debut, is one of the best discs to cross my desk since A Wilhelm Scream's fantastic Mute Print almost a year ago. Combining the vocals of Ben Burnley (Breaking Benjamin) with the guitars of A Wilhelm Scream, Cry Havoc are definitely a catch for any label. Their sound is marketable enough for a mainstream audience, especially one who embraces the likes of Thrice and Rise Against, but it's intelligent enough not to cater specifically to it. There's a lot of good here -- layered guitars, soaring vocals, good lyrics, and some original drumming -- to keep any fan of melodic hardcore satisfied. However, there's no screaming at all to be found here, and that's probably the best thing that could have happened to this record. "Bald Spots, Bloody Knuckles" opens the record with a bang, sporting a chorus that will have you singing for days (and it's not about girls or being cool). "The Animal Within" is definitely single material with the most enticing bridge into the second verse I think I've ever heard in all my years. And the fact that it sports another anthemic chorus, one that shouts for truth and can definitely handle it. This is definitely not like some pussy punk band that wants rebellion for the sake of fitting in. "Hospital Sunday" rocks the house as well, sporting some solid drumming and songwriting, but by this time in the record, it's become standard. However, there's nothing standard about the chorus of this baby -- this is one of the catchiest, most affecting choruses this side of the Atlantic has ever heard. And well, the album doesn't stop there. But, it might take you awhile to get past this point, considering the amount of times tracks 1, 3, and 5 will be repeated. You'll listen to them so much, chances are it might take you a week to get to the sixth track. But, be rest assured, that when you do, you will be equally amazed. There's nothing as amazing in the second half, but there's nothing to be disappoined about either. If the feeling you get after listening to this album is what they call the The Outcome of Misery, I'll go start stabbing myself now so I can get to this.
