Cryptic Chicken

Cryptic Chicken

BandPopRock

Cryptic Chicken right now is the name under which I write. The genres are mixed - pop, rock, country, latin. The songs are written for fairly broad appeal, influenced by the likes of the Beatles, Stones, folks singers of the 70's & 80's and so on, ranging from reflective ballads to danceable rock.

Biography

I've been writing for 30 years or so, but only have started recording in earnest since September 2010. There are over 50 musical ideas and songs in the hopper, with 20 recorded already. As I've been recording the older ones, new also come up - out of the 20, 8 are entirely new since then, with another 4 new ones in various stages of completion. One song - Minamisanriku - was performed by myself and a jam band I work with at a benefit concert in Ottawa for the Japanese disaster victims.

My daughter Maddie (she's 10 currently and has Down Syndrome) absolutely loves the songs. She sings them, dances to them, and makes us play them in the car constantly (driving the rest of the family nuts). She's my canary in the coal mine to know if a song is going to be good or not.

My objective is to eventually have some of them taken up and performed by established acts. At 55, not having rock star cachet or stage presence, I'll be happy to perform where possible, but it's really for others to take the baton and make them sound really good.

As mentioned, the Beatles are one of my influences. I have the same birthday and spiritual orientation as George Harrison, so I'll take that as a good thing. :)

Lady Blue

Written By: George Parkanyi & Benedek Parkanyi co-write

LADY BLUE

VERSE 1
The moon breaks through on a cloudy night,
To kiss your face. Well I am that light.
As I’m watching you, watching over you, Lady Blue.
A snowflake clings to your long black hair.
Touch it gently, and know that I’m there
As I’m watching you, watching over you, Lady Blue.

CHORUS
I left one day, without saying good-bye
I tried, but I could not get back to you
Just know that you’re so amazing
Oh yes you’re still so amazing
To me
To me

VERSE 2
When you turn your head, to the new spring sun,
To hide your tears, so you don’t have to run,
I’ll be watching you, watching over you, Lady Blue.
I’ll come to you, in the summer rain
To wash you soul, and rinse out your pain
As I’m watching you, watching over you, Lady Blue.

CHORUS
I left one day, without saying good-bye
I tried, but I could not get back to you
Just know that you’re so amazing
Oh yes you’re still so amazing
To me
To me

VERSE 3
As you softly sob, into curled up knees,
Close your eyes, and hold the night breeze
I am watching you, watching over you, Lady Blue.
No I can’t love you, as I did before
From infinite inches, love you so much more.
As I’m watching you, watching over you, Lady Blue.

Mandy's Heaven

Written By: George Parkanyi

MANDY'S HEAVEN

VERSE 1
A hot cup of coffee with a drop of cream,
I warm my hands on the rising steam
And look outside at the foggy bay
Where I just came from like I do now every day

VERSE 2
“Mandy’s Heaven”, is where I sit
A little café out on the rocky spit
A “Hi” to Sally, and a nod to Joe
But I don’t feel much like talking, and they both know

CHORUS
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday’s the same.
Every morning, here I sit and look outside and
whisper your name.

VERSE 3
I’ve never seen the bay as calm as this
As I drift back to the things I miss
Those little things matter I see that now
And you don’t get ‘em back, you don’t get them back
no-how

VERSE 4
Is that your face in the rising mist?
The face that last month I gently kissed
It was all so wrong, but you were strong
Not like me, not like me, no not like me …

CHORUS
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
Sunday’s the same.
Every morning, here I sit and look outside and
whisper your name.

VERSE 5
A hot cup of coffee, and time to kill
Mandy comes over, with another fill
I thank her, and I see she’s studying me
Her eyes say it all – reflecting how I must be

VERSE 6
A hot cup of coffee, and I bite my lip
And turn to the sea – so I can keep a grip
I dig in my pockets, and pull out some change
It’s time to go now, to start all over again.

CHORUS
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
Sunday’s the same.
Every morning, here I sit and look outside and
whisper your name.

Then the Trouble Starts Again

Written By: George Parkanyi

Then the Trouble Starts Again

VERSE 1
I want you to love me, as I love you
To be my special friend
But just when I think that we’ve got it straight
then the trouble starts again.

VERSE 2
My friends all tell me that I think too much
But I strongly disagree when …
Just as I think that we’re eye to eye
then the trouble starts again.

CHORUS
When I think that it’s settled, that we’re all square;
That I’m gonna get some peace of mind.
I’m sitting here thinking that I’m in the clear;
but the trouble ain’t far behind.

INSTRUMENTAL

CHORUS
When I think that it’s settled, that we’re all square;
Finally some peace of mind.
I’m sitting here thinking that I’m in the clear;
but the trouble ain’t far behind.

VERSE 3
As I recall tonight you came with me
But when I look for you, you’re gone.
Once again I’m driving home alone,
well the trouble goes on and on.

VERSE 4
I’d like to believe - and you can call me naïve,
But there’s another man in your bed.
We talked about this just yesterday,
Ahh! so much trouble ahead.

CHORUS
When I think that it’s settled, that we’re all square;
That I’m gonna get some peace of mind.
I’m sitting here thinking that I’m in the clear
but the trouble ain’t far behind.

INSTRUMENTAL

CHORUS/ENDING
I don’t mind meetin’ other folks with you;
but not when they’re in your bed!
Call me old-fashioned, but it’s plain to see;
there’s endless trouble ahead.

REPEAT CHORUS
When I think that it’s settled, that we’re all square;
That finally it’s gonna end.
Just when I think that we’ve got it straight;
Then the trouble all starts again. Oh yeah now
Just when I think that we’ve got it straight
Then the trouble starts again.

Coffee With You

COFFEE WITH YOU

VERSE 1
I’m calling to see, if you’ll have coffee with me, in the morning
Let’s make it quarter to nine,
and if you can’t make it on time,
I’ll sit and read – yes it’s fine
I’ll be looking for you.

VERSE 2
Standing in line, I look at the board, and its daunting -
so many things there to choose,
So let's catch up, what’s your news?
A month now? Or is it two?
Either way it’s been too long.

INSTRUMENTAL

VERSE 3
Chai for me, latte for you – never changes
Let’s find a table – right there,
the one with comfortable chairs,
I like what you’ve done with your hair.
Some sugar? or maybe some cream?

VERSE 4
To tell you the truth, I miss you a lot, I’m glad to see you. You’re looking good, it’s a shame
We won’t have the same last name,
It’s just life – there’s nothing to blame.
I guess we just carry on.

BRIDGE
You’re sitting right there and I’m not even aware of
what you’re saying, I am so lost.
I’m trying to hide, that I’m dying inside,
Crushed, and counting the cost.

VERSE 5
I hope your folks, are doing all right, say hello
I see that it’s now close to ten,
We must do this again, yes we must do this again
I wish you the best, I do. I do.

The Muse

The Muse

VERSE 1
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
I don’t know why, it’s so
I don’t know where it will go.

VERSE 2
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
I’ve never flown, so high.
I’ve never known, what I could try.

CHORUS
I think I love her crazy bad
I think I love her crazy bad
I think I love her crazy bad

INSTRUMENTAL

VERSE 3
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
I try to reach her, but she’s gone.
Mystic creature? or the one?

VERSE 4
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
I’m feeling stranger, every day
Feel the danger, as I say …

CHORUS
I think I love her crazy bad
I think I love her crazy bad
I think I love her crazy bad

INSTRUMENTAL

BRIDGE
I’m on fire, and it’s safe to say
Never have I ever, felt this way.
Seems I have options – need to choose
Tell me, is she some kind of muse?

VERSE 5
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
Super hero, I could be.
Whenever she is, near me.

VERSE 4
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
She makes me crazy; she makes me feel alive.
I’m feeling stranger, every day
Feel the danger, as I say …

CHORUS
I think I love her crazy bad
I think I love her crazy bad
I think I love her crazy bad

ENDING
She makes me crazy; she makes me I feel alive.
I feel crazy; I feel alive.
So crazy; I feel alive.
Think I love her, crazy bad
Think I love her, crazy mad

Megan

Written By: George Parkanyi

MEGAN

VERSE 1
Megan, I have a story
But I need someone to help it through.
My logic, a priori,
is that someone, should be you.
It needs a love,
a love that weathers all through thick and thin
It needs a part
That swells the heart and has me leaning in
To kiss you softly.

VERSE 2
Megan, I feel it forming
I close my eyes and start to see
The characters, aligned, conforming
To a wondrous, destiny
Against the fates,
the hero presses on to finally win
And as he states
His true intentions he’ll be leaning in
To kiss you softly.

VERSE 3
Megan, the tale’s a good one
Will you come and write the rest with me?
But how much detail, really should one
Lay out bare, for all to see?
So leave some out
And you and I can choose what we leave in
But have no doubt
I need the part that has me leaning in
To kiss you softly.

VERSE 4
But Megan, there is a crisis
The hero, and heroine’s plight
Just one of, those devices
They say the story needs to come out right
She’s far away
And they don’t know when they will meet again.
When’s the day?
The day when one more time he’s leaning in?
To kiss you softly.

VERSE 5
Megan, how do we write it?
Will there be a happy end?
These days, I often fight it?
This fear that it can’t be, my lovely friend.
So come and stay,
We’ll write the parts that still need filling in
I’ll gaze at you,
And you at me as I am leaning in
To kiss you softly.

Ah, Megan.

While I'm Waiting for You

Written By: George Parkanyi

While I’m Waiting for You

VERSE 1

I’ll be right there, you know
Whenever you call
For a coffee, a chat, to change out a flat
The reason, doesn’t matter at all.
I just love your company,
And I know it’s both ways,
It seems my chosen path, is to make you laugh,
And yours, to light up my day.

CHORUS
But I’m still broken, not sure what to do
‘Cause you’re in love with him, while I’m ever waiting
for you.

VERSE 2
Still, I drop everything
And reach for the phone
When I see that its you, I know what to do
Grab the keys and I’m gone
To pick you up and go, wherever it suits
To go get some lunch, or follow a hunch
on where to find that new pair of boots.

CHORUS
While I keep hoping, that you’ll think it through,
And the light will go on, you’ll know I’m the one,
while I keep waiting for you.

INSTRUMENTAL

CHORUS Yes I keep hoping, that you’ll think it through,
And the light will go on, you’ll know I’m the one,
while I keep waiting for you.

VERSE 3
It’s been so many years
But I just keep on
Being a friend, with all the time I can spend,
On you so you don’t get it wrong.
Can’t you, don’t you, see it too. I’m (overlay)
Right here in front of you (overlay)
Yes I’ll do all I can, to try to get you to see
Never, ever, say “I do” (overlay)
There’s only one thing, just don’t take his ring
to him. (overlay)
Cause you’ll be doing much better with me.
CHORUS
Yes I keep dreaming, that you’ll see deep down,
And the light will go on, you’ll know I’m the one,
while I keep waiting around.

REPEAT_CHORUS Yes I keep dreaming, you’ll see the right thing to do,
And when the light goes on, and you know I’m the one,
I’ll no longer be waiting for you.

Truth be Told

Truth Be Told

VERSE 1
Can’t taste my food, I don’t go out. The world looks black and white to me.
It makes no sense, ‘cause it’s been two years, that we went our ways - I should feel free.
And truth be told I was never right for you.
But I’m stuck here; and don’t know what to do.

VERSE 2
I hate my job, … just mail it in, and nothing seems to help to pull me through.
Don’t sleep much, just toss and turn … I fight it, but my thoughts are slave to you.
Truth be told you weren’t even right for me.
But a stubborn heart - won’t let me be.

Instrumental Bridge

VERSE 3
I wake up …and I take my pills and the rest sometimes, beckon me. G
If the devil asked, I’d sell my soul - sign anywhere just to get free
Oh the truth be told we were never meant to be.
But tell that to a heart that just won’t see.

ENDING
Yeah truth be told we were never meant to be.
Can’t shake it off – this strange insanity
When will peace of mind come back to me? … if ever
Yeah truth be told we were never meant to be.
Tell that to a heart that just can’t see.
When will peace of mind come back to me? to me.

REPEAT AND FADE
Truth be told
Truth be told
Truth be told
Truth be told
Truth be told
Truth be told ...

Bother to Love Me

Written By: George Parkanyi

BOTHER TO LOVE ME

VERSE 1
I think I treat you right, but maybe not
Baby this is what I’ve got,
Does it bother you to love me?
I see that you’re still mad at me
Over ancient history
Does it bother you to love me?

CHORUS 1
And I know that it’s not easy when you think that it should be,
I could do better, yes it’s plainly out there for us both to see,
But every time I go to try, you get angry, tell me why?
Does it bother you to love me?

VERSE 2
So now it comes to me as no surprise
When I talk, you roll your eyes,
Does it bother you to love me?
So somehow can you help me out?
All I see in you is doubt.
Does it bother you to love me?

CHORUS 2
And when I think about the times we had before I wonder why
It has to be so hard today I really do, I really try
Lately seems I just can’t win, am I out or am I in?
Does it bother you to love me?

Bridging Instrumental

CHORUS 3
Is there some way now that I can make you laugh and change your heart?
Is there some way we can set this all aside and then re-start?
You should know that I love you, and I wish you’d think it through,
Why it bothers you to love me.

CHORUS 1
And I know that it’s not easy when you think that it should be,
I could do better, yes it’s plainly out there for us both to see,
But every time I go to try, you get angry, tell me why?
Does it bother you to love me?

VERSE 1
I think I treat you right, but maybe not
Baby this is what I’ve got,
Does it bother you to love me?
I see that you’re still mad at me
Over ancient history
Does it bother you to love me?

CHORUS 3
Is there some way now that I can make you laugh and change your heart?
Is there some way we can set this all aside and then re-start?
You should know that I love you, and I wish you’d think it through,
Why it bothers you to love me.

Open Book / Eunice-Jean

VERSE 1
"Maybe I don’t, maybe I do"
Give me something baby I can hang onto
"Maybe I won’t, maybe I will"
Are you coming in for love or just the - final kill?

CHORUS
Baby my heart is an open book,
I like to wear my love on my sleeve,
Turn the page and take one more look,
And if you don’t like it then I will leave.

VERSE 2
Maybe it’s cool, maybe it’s not
You’re talking all the time but never saying a lot
Maybe it’s foul, maybe it’s fine
Is there something you can throw me here to ease my mind?

CHORUS
Baby my heart is an open book,
I like to wear my love on my sleeve,
Turn the page and take one more look,
And if you don’t like it then I will leave.

INSTRUMENTAL

VERSE 3
Maybe it’s new, maybe it’s old
This water isn’t running hot, it’s running cold
Maybe it’s right, or maybe it’s wrong
We’ve known a good time or two, but this ain’t one

CHORUS
Baby my heart is an open book,
I like to wear my love on my sleeve,
Turn the page and take one more look,
And if you don’t like it then I will leave.

They it's better late than never
Don't think you'll know it, anyway

Paying it Down

Written By: George Parkanyi

PAYING IT DOWN

VERSE 1

There'll come a time when I won't see another dawn
And on that day will I find my life account is overdrawn?
Did I do enough that was right by you?
And did I say enough to comfort you, when you needed it most?
Did I hold you enough? To show that I was there for you?

VERSE 2

Now only so many sunrises and sunsets
Leaves me wondering down a trail of loose ends and regrets
Did it seem, that I never listened to your dreams? … and hopes?
And did I push you away? When I should have pulled you closer in?
Did I ever say? "I'm sorry", for what should have been?

CHORUS
Payin' it down, payin' it down ... slow
Payin' it down, payin' it down ... slow

VERSE 3
Ever closer comes the day that's that last for me
I rummage the past to understand the things that I just couldn't see.
Did I think of you more than of me - even once?
Did I know to call, when you were up and hurting at three?… in the morning
Did I give it all, when it counted most from me?

CHORUS
Payin' it down, payin' it down ... slow
Payin' it down, payin' it down ... slow

INSTRUMENTAL
Paying it down, oooh.

VERSE 4
A chance or two - that's all, as the end draws near
If you only knew how badly I need that slate to be clear
Cause' then I'd know, there's just one thing left to go
And that's to take your hand, and say the one thing left to say
"I love you"
Yes "I love you" must be the last thing left to say.

Guantanomo Getaway

Written By: George Parkanyi

Guantanamo Get-Away

VERSE 1
It’s gettin’ too busy with a lot at stake
Been fightin’ something back, and I need a break
Been’ prayin’ for a change, five times a day
Could use a little get-away.

CHORUS
So book me a seat to Guantanamo Bay,
Last-minute special – extended stay,
A little captivation in the Latin sun,
It’s something new to me,
yeah something new, - but hey it might just be
fun.

VERSE 2
Window seat sir? would you rather an aisle?
Plenty of service, but without the smile
The price is right – can you really resist?
Paperwork optional, if you get the gist.

CHORUS
So book me a seat to Guantanamo Bay,
Last-minute special – extended stay,
A little captivation in the Latin sun,
It’s something new to me,
yeah something new, - but hey it might just be
fun.

VERSE 3
The days are long, so that it gets serene,
In a setting that could well be described as - marine,
A new way of meeting, and of making friends,
How many and who? well it all depends…

CHORUS
So book me a seat to Guantanamo Bay,
Last-minute special – extended stay,
A little captivation in the Latin sun,
It’s something new to me,
yeah something new, - but hey it might just be
fun.

VERSE 3
The brochures don’t tell you - all that much
A quiet little piece - of Cuba, as such
But why ask questions when it’s such a steal?
Does it matter what is, and isn’t real?

CHORUS
So book me a seat to Guantanamo Bay,
Last-minute special – extended stay,
A little captivation in the Latin sun,
It’s something new to me,
yeah something new, - but hey it might just be
fun.

REPEAT CHORUS
So book me a seat to Guantanamo Bay,
Last-minute special – extended stay,
A little captivation in the Latin sun,
It’s something new to me,
yeah something new, - but hey it might just be
fun.

Minamisanriku

Written By: George Parkanyi

MINAMISANRIKU

VERSE 1
Minamisanriku you were beautiful.
You could have been the ocean’s bride
But one day your love, it turned on you
Then you were gone, gone with the tide.

VERSE 2
Minamisanriku where have you gone?
You didn’t leave much behind
Some of us children, we left with you
When they come looking, what will they find?

CHORUS
If you want to know where we are now, put up a wind chime
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.

VERSE 3
Minamisanriku in our young years
You were all that we knew.
Now so much sadness, cries and tears
Was it right that we went with you?

CHORUS
If you want to know where we are now, put up a wind chime
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.

INSTRUMENTAL

VERSE 4
Minamisanriku this is new to us.
Sometimes we wish there could be.
Someone we know, to come and hold our hands.
Until we come back home from the sea.

CHORUS
If you want to know where we are now, put up a wind chime
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.

VERSE 5
Minamisanriku will they make you again?
Will you look as you did once before?
Where will they plant the new cherry trees?
In the hills or down by the shore?

CHORUS
If you want to know where we are now, put up a wind chime
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.
And we’ll be coming back, one cherry blossom at a time.

(End with rustling fade of wind chime)

Discography

One other approach I am taking to put the songs "out there" is to get on I-tunes or some other commercial download site(s). Current demos are home-recorded, so at some point I want to get into a studio and re-record them with better sound engineering and mixing.

The songs can all be heard at www.showcaseyourmusic.com/oksymoron.

The lyrics for Eyes of Blue are by Christina Olaveson, and Lady Blue we co-written with my son Ben Parkanyi. All the other music and lyrics are mine.
