Bio

Crystal Bats are two young men called Will; Will Vaughan and Will Jones. They are named after the evil chiroptera in The Dark Crystal, and are based in Henstead, Suffolk. Will Vaughan comes from Lowestoft (the decrepit, collapsed-industry seaside town famous for birthing Tim Westwood, Benjamin Britten and The Darkness), whereas Will Jones grew up in Beccles (a rural market town that was recently included in a Top 10 list of the least ethnically diverse towns in Britain). Despite being born in the same hospital, they didn't actually meet until they were 13 and attending the same comprehensive school. This is when they decided to avoid being duffed-up and/or stabbed, by spending every lunchtime in the music room, hoping to teach themselves how to write pop songs.
Like most people in music, Mssrs. Will V & Will J have been in many, terrible bands before they formed Crystal Bats - including but not limited to: terrible rock, terrible psychedelic jazz fusion, terrible atmospheric-broken-chord-suspension-based pop-rock, and terrible funk. Then they decided to form a tight-knit pop duo and make the ultimate synthesis of all music that had gone before. If you were Kirsty Lang and asked them to rescue one desert island disc from the waves, it would be the one written by Green Gartside.
Crystal Bats' HQ is Toad Row Studios, which Will & Will have decorated with miniature toy pianos, arcane synthesisers, Chinese fans, peacock feathers, tassled lamps, flock wallpaper and an executive desk that has a green leather top. Henstead's village owl can often be found outside and it is here that Will Vaughan and Will Jones write and record all Crystal Bats' music. When they need to get an airing, Will & Will like to go on rainy afternoon walks to explore de-consecrated churches. This is when Will Jones' degree in medieval history can come in useful.
Despite being a couple of pale, flamboyantly dressed ponces, Crystal Bats are very much male men. For example, in the mid-1990s, Will Jones passed a swimming exam by walking across the bottom of the pool (to this day, he carries this secret with him). LAD. He also captained the Beccles Rhinos Rugby Football Youth Squad to an historic defeat against the notoriously inept Southwold RUFC (he was not asked to captain again). LAD. Similarly, Will (Vaughan) was once fielded as centre forward for Gisleham FC. The boys lost 10-0. LAD. He is also the proud owner of no fewer than FIVE Thetford Chase Walk bronze medals (he continues to walk daily). LAD. They are not, however, Four Proper Lads Here To Give The Charts A Kick Up The Arse.
