Coming up with band names is tough...I understand, but is "Crystal" the new "Wolf"? Having a crystal moustache would be an awesome conversational piece...maybe a little rough on your lip though. The ladies might not enjoy it so much.
Crystal Moustache is an interesting new project based in Montreal. They recently recorded a few tracks with Arlen Thompson, the drummer from Wolf Parade, and are currently pressing a 7" EP. The young project plans to record an LP in about 6-7 months, but this taste shows the project has a lot of promise. Imagine Jim Morrison fronting a soulful, jazzed-up Canadian indie rock band. Who doesn't love the lizard king, piano, woodwinds and brass?

Crystal Moustache may be the best or worst band name I?fve heard in some quite time, but I can?ft decide which. One thing is for sure, I?fm definitely picking up what they?fre throwing down.
Thanks to MOKB?fs SIRIUS Blog Radio Show for turning me onto the Montreal based indie rockers (and the mp3s). MOKB says of the band, ?gImagine Jim Morrison fronting a soulful, jazzed-up Canadian indie rock band.?h I have to say, that is pretty spot on.
Apparently they are in the process of pressing a 7?? EP and will begin recording an LP in 6-7 months. Enjoy!

Je suis un fervent défenseur de la moustache, pas la bacchante, la vraie, celle de Charles Bronson, celle du camioneur, celle de l'anglais dans la grande vadrouille, celle qui garde un peu de mousse de bière collée, si, si, mais bon c'est pas évident à porter et ma nana n'aime pas trop alors...Je pourrais p'tetre lui proposer une moustache en cristal, ça ferait plus classe...Classe c'est éxactement le terme que j'emploierai pour vous parler des Montréalais de Crystal Moustache (eh ouais tout ça pour ça)... La scène anglo/francophone du Quebec est de celle bouillonante et pétillante, pleine d'idées, de mecs barrés et d'allumés brelots...On parle beaucoup des Frenchies de la french touch mais croyez moi c'est à Montréal et Quebec que ça se passe !
Perso je découvrait cette scène avec youtube il y a deux ans en matant quelques épisodes de feu l'émission "prochaine sortie" qui m'a dailleurs bien inspiré pour la mienne. Et je tombais très rapidement amoureux des Omnikrom et leur rap girouette, de Numéro et leur pop sucette ou encore de l'irremplaçable Ghislain Poirier pour ne citer qu'eux.
Et puis l'autre jour je tombe un peu par hasard a vrai dire en épluchant my old kentucky, sur un article comparant la musique des Crystal Moustache à un Jim Morrison jouant un jazz soulful avec un groupe d' indie/rock canadien. Ça plus le nom du groupe il en fallait pas plus pour que je m'arrête sur leur myspace et écoute leur prods.
Loins des banging parties et des dance floor suant, les CM jouent un rock très mûre,
à l'écoute de Mother's child on se croierait à faire du stop sur une route du nord des Etats unis, sous la pluie et le froid après avoir englouti un burger au snack de routier, le seul sur les prochains 500km, quelque chose de très triste s'en dégage et en même temps très agréable, comme être seul et n'avoir rien à perdre, souligné par la voix du chanteur, profonde et mystérieuse, et les éclairs de flute traversière (saxo ?) qui comme son nom l'indique traverse le titre sous l'orage et en plus j'ai encore au moins 200 bornes à faire en stop !!
Le second titre en écoute Golden son, à effectivement des relents du lézart-roi, Morrison, blues/rock efficace, incantatoire, keep your hands on the wheel, your eyes on the roooadd...guitare omniprésente pour prière à l'enfant élu, l'enfant or, totem musical, trip sous peyote mélodique, il est né le divine enfant, en tout cas les CM sont parrainés par les rois mages et si c'est moi l'âne alors je suis heureux de voir naître ce groupe !!
Pour des raisons (de merde) de fournisseur polynésien (de merde) en rade (un virus nous dit on, le virus du foutage de gueule j'ai envie de dire), il m'est impossible d'uploader le moindre matériel, je vous invite donc à aller faire un tour sur leur myspace, un soir ou vous avez le temps, et d'attendre dans les prochains mois (9 ?) l'album...

A lot of bands these days can be considered straight forward "indie" bands. This is not to say that these bands all sound the same, but rather that there are clear commonalities between a lot of these bands, from the image they project to the sound they make. It seems that people might be more hard pressed to fit Crystal Moustache in a specific category, as this band has embarked upon a new musical journey. We are all deeply influenced by hip-hop, though we all come from disparate musical backgrounds. What one hears when listening to a Crystal Moustache song then is a composite of the past, the present, and the future. We are influenced by the grooves and rhythms of the the 60's rn'b scene as well as the golden age of hip hop during 90's. We are influenced by the guitar stylings of the strokes and the Velvet Underground, and by the psychedelic textures found in an Animal Collective or Caribou song. We do not try to sound like anything or anyone in particular, and though we irrefultably have our influences, our compositions end up being entirely original and entirely Crystal Moustache. We are not genre specific, we cannot be; Crystal Moustache is an entirely new way of approaching music.
