THE SOUND
Chris Tauchner Quintessence (CTQ) is heavily influenced by the jazz-rock fusion of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, the deep soul funk of Roy Ayers, and the spacey esthetic of Sun Ra.
The CTQ sound is centered around funky vamps on electric piano, bass and guitar, which can be laid-back and soulful, or edgy and raw, but always groovy.
The front line of sax and trumpet can bring the fire or take you on a trip, delivering melodies that range from tender and contemplative, to intense, complex and modern.
The drums and conga provide a pulse that is solid, yet free, steady, yet imaginative, earthy but with a liberal dash Latin and African flavours.
Washing throughout the music are the sounds and textures of vintage synthesizer pads and themes.
THE BAND
The members of CTQ have all been featured on stages across North America and Europe, at festivals such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, North By North East, Halifax Pop Explosion, Canadian Music Week, Vue sur la Relève, and Evolve, and in top-rated clubs such Zanzibar Blue (Philadelphia), The Rex (Toronto), and Le Spectrum and Club Soda (Montreal). As a band, CTQ has performed at some of the finest venues in the Montreal area, such as Upstairs Jazz Club, O Patro Vys, Divan Orange, Casa del Popolo, Les Pas Sages, Crowley Arts Centre and the St-Ambroise Funk ‘n Jazz Festival.
