Cuibul

A band with a rich history, being the oldest one among the still active bands from Moldova – “Cuibul” was formed in 1991 by Igor Dinga, in Chisinau. That year Dinga returned from the Soviet army. He did the military service in Moscow in the period when “perestroika” was in full swing and rock music was coming out from the underground and getting big throughout USSR. Besides political and cultural freedoms, “perestroika” brought into the society economic chaos, poverty and despair. In such a context “Cuibul” started its work.
Their first songs were influenced by The Cure, INXS and Midnight Oil. The band members had 22-23 years and music became their lifestyle. In spring 1992 “Cuibul” had already recorded its first album. During the same year the armed conflict with Transnistria started in Moldova.
In the early ‘90s the band members experimented with different styles, starting with swing. Their second album “Lomaite vetki, lomaite palki” (1994) came out on the wave of grunge rock. The third album “Icar” (1995) combined several styles and was influenced by the band Mr. Bunge. Also in 1995 two wind instruments appeared in the band. “Cuibul” was trying to make music that would be accepted and requested in Western Europe and especially in the Benelux countries, following the example and success in that region of the Russian band Auktion. Unfortunately the lack of management and the isolation of Moldova didn’t allow the band to freely travel abroad.
Since Igor Dinga was a Russian language lyricist, the following 3 albums were released on labels from Russia: “Pomidor” (1998) - Feelee Records, “Kliuchi ot vannoi” (2001) - CD Land Records and “Priz” (2010) - Soyuz Music.
“Cuibul”’s music was some steps ahead of many rock bands of that time. But back then the rock music industry was almost inexistent in the former USSR countries. Igor Dinga decided that in order to develop his activity and promote his creation was better to move to Moscow, but the band members didn’t take this step, each of them having their own plans. In 1998 Moldova went through a financial meltdown and these adverse conditions, together with others, led to break-up.
In 2000 Dinga restarted “Cuibul”’s activity in a new line-up and musical formula. The keyboards, female back vocals, electronic drums began to be used. “Cuibul” dropped the alternative rock in favor of a more elitist music. In 2001 the band releases a new album, “Kliuchi ot vannoi”, which remains unnoticed by the critics and misunderstood by the public. But this album is appreciated by professional musicians for its musical content and the excellent quality of the recording. In August 2002 “Cuibul” again concludes its work with a final concert in Chisinau. Dinga totally dedicates himself to the management of the band “Zdob si Zdub”, whose producer is since 1994.
In 2008, Igor Coselean – the saxophonist from the first “Cuibul” line-up, returned from The Netherlands. That same year the drummer Vadim Tichisan returned from Bucharest. This fact was a great opportunity to reunite “Cuibul” in its classic line-up: Igor Dinga - vocals, guitar; Andrei Boico – bass guitar, Vadim Tichisan- drums, Igor Cosolean dropped the saxophone in favor of the guitar. In 2008 the band was rehearsing and searching for a new sound. Shortly, “Cuibul” performed new tracks on stage. In 2009 the band recorded 13 new songs which afterwards were released as an album, called “Priz”. Since February the video for the song “Prosheai i zdravstvui” is on various TV channels and websites. In a few months another video was filmed, for the track “Ruchka usilka”. The video, shot in Moscow by the director Yurii Vlasov, became a hit on Internet and is in rotation on TV channels from Ukraine and Moldova.
“Cuibul” started the 2010 year with a series of concerts in Chisinau. On June 5 “Soyuz Music” label released the album “Priz” in Russia. The release concerts were held in Moscow and Sankt Petersburg. In November 2010 the release will take place in Kiev, where the band had previously performed. The first big tour throughout Russia and Ukraine is planned for the end of the year. In 2011 “Cuibul” will perform on the stages of European festivals.
