"What did YOU do for Halloween?"

Curl played at the ARmy and Navy Club on View Street on Oct. 28th ... a regular Halloween gig for them! Featuring the Mad Hatter (Sue Johnson, bass), Annie Oakley (Helen Davies, guitar and vocals), ScatCat (Christa Rossner, drums) and Beep Bop a Hula (Dee Cooper, keys). In between spot dances and 50/50 draws, the girls really rocked it up. Joined over the course of the evening by veteran musicians John Hunter on drums, Al Sabourin on guitar and the fabulous Bill Johnson on guitar, some awesome tunes went down. - Victoria Blues Society Newsletter, November 1, 2011

"Thomas Maler's Review of CURL - Hermann's Jazz Club, March 10, 2012"

Well, it was a sold out show at Hermann's yesterday and what a show it was. If you have not been there, you have missed one of the best gigs I have seen here in a long time. It was one of those rare events where everything worked fine, from the beginning to the end. I saw the CURL band for the first time ever and I was really, really surprised how good they were.

They opened with an excellent version of Cadillac Baby blues tune and a large proportion of their set was blues, I am sure they did it just for me, ha. I was at the door, but I had a hard time concentrating on the tickets, rather than tapping my foot to the music. What struck me was how smooth and relaxed, but still very rhythmic and bluesy their music was. There was none of the wanking that is characteristic of some of the local guitar gods and that is a good thing.

Bio

HELEN DAVIES - A singer for more than 20 years, Helen is known for Janis Joplin style vocals and an energetic stage presence. As CURL's guitar player, she has been honing her blues chops for the last 10 years. She is a former member of classic rock band Rukus, pop band The Voodoo Slaves, eight-piece R&B band, Davy’s Gang and blues-rock quartet Canadian Bandwagon, which appeared at Victoria’s Blues Bash in 2000.

DEE COOPER - A keyboardist and vocalist with a sophisticated jazz touch, Dee started playing with rock bands in her native Ontario, then formed the jazz fusion group 'Spaces,' which went on to perform original music at Ontario festivals and clubs and on local radio broadcasts. After moving west in 1992, she played for cover band Loose Change, blues band AMP'D, and recently joined the ladies of CURL.

SUSAN JOHNSON - On bass for the last 10 years, Susan provides a solid foundation for CURL with her groovy bass lines and flawless sense of rhythm. Influenced very much by the blues, she is key to CURL’s unique sound. Susan formerly played saxophone with pop band, The Voodoo Slaves.

CHRISTA ROSSNER - A tasty, rhythmic drummer with a solid sense of timing, Christa started by hand-drumming at roots and blues parties – which is how she eventually met the ladies of CURL. She quickly became a kit drummer, and ten years down the line is now a solid blues shuffler with an intuitive and sophisticated sense of timing.
