Bio

Formerly of the Academy of Irish Music, Cú Roí formed their own band within the Academy in 2004 under the name pléráca. After releasing a self-titled album in 2005, the band moved from the Academy and became an independent band, Cú Roí. Cú Roí arranges all of their own sets, as well as many of the lyrics being original. Several players of the band have been playing together for over 10 years. Cú Roí plays straight traditional Irish tunes, as well as arranges them into sets with transitions and harmonies. Cú Roí also has original music and tunes.

Cú Roí has been featured on several Chicago TV news programs over the years, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and Channel 4 the Gaelic Channel in Ireland.

Past performances have included:
• Opening for the Chieftains at the Chicago Civic Opera House,
• Performing for Mary McAleese, the President of Ireland, and Mayor Richard M. Daley’s St. Patrick’s Day Party for 5 consecutive years,
• Numerous functions including weddings, concerts, political events and engagements in various pubs in the Chicago land area, and
• Festivals and concerts throughout the US with standing ovations, including the main stage of Milwaukee Irish Fest for 3 years, Chicago Celtic Fest and the Catskills Irish Arts Week in New York.

AWARDS: include multiple-time Midwest Fleadh Cheoil Guppa Cheoil Champions, and multiple individual awards, including in Solo musicianship, Duets and Trios. Bodhran player Kiera Byrne has also tied for 1st in the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Listowel, Co. Kerry in the Bodhran competition.
