"Insight at Rockwood Music Hall"

The fiery Latin Jazz septet Insight made a rare New York appearance at the Loisaida's Rockwood Music Hall (Dec. 1st) to play music from their critically acclaimed new CD A Genesis. Co-led by Zaccai and Luques Curtis, on piano and bass respectively, the group exhibited one of the most exciting sounds on the scene today, distinguished by tightly-played serpentine arrangements that melded memorable melodies, sophisticated harmonies and a dazzling array of AfroCarribean rhythms. Opening with a new piece, "Justice began with a warm solo bass recital which gradually built in intensity as the piano introduced a pretty optimistic melody and the percussive interplay of drummer John Davis and conguero Reinaldo De Jesus set down the incendiary rhythm. By the time the riffing horn section of trumpeter Philip Bizack, altoist Chris Allen and tenor saxophonist Frank Kozyra joined in, the house was ablaze with excitement. Four songs from the group's album clearly displayed the distinguished composing and arranging abilities of Zaccai, particularly the beautifully sanguine "Necessity and the dramatic "Story In Three . An original arrangement of "The Panamanian Murga and the dedication "Hilton's Rumba demonstrated the pianist's inventive use of traditional rhythms, allowing the group's stellar soloists to show off their impressive chops. On the final number, "Descarga , several players from the audience joined in for an electrifying finish.

"Album Of The Week: Blood - Spirit - Land - Water - Freedom, The Curtis Brothers Quartet"

"Fearlessness is a great quality in an improvising musician that can lead to the creation of an innovative and inspiring artist. Jazz requires personal growth from an artist over the course of time, and reaching that goal demands a constant stream of risk taking. Musicians need to fearlessly grasp the opportunity to take risks, but they must decide which risks will push them in the right direction. A musician can be absolutely fearless, taking every available risk, but in most cases, this simply seems wild and reckless. They attack the music aimlessly without a foundation, skipping serious background work in favor of blind ambition. A true state of fearlessness in jazz comes from a confident attitude built upon years of training, technical ability, and an in-depth stylistic knowledge. Musicianship and practiced technique allow a musician to execute the intricacies of their stylistic insights effortlessly. As these stylistic elements become a natural extension of their artistic identity, they can fearlessly explore the outer limits of their style. They understand the detailed inner workings of the tradition and they’ve internalized its core components; as they explore, they will take intelligent risks. They understand how to push the boundaries and explore new ideas while paying respects to innovations of the past. Their fearlessness will result in stylistic growth and exciting innovations instead of disrespect and degradation. Pianist Zaccai Curtis and bassist Luques Curtis lead their quartet on a fearless journey through modern Latin Jazz concepts on Blood • Spirit • Land • Water • Freedom, making smart inroads into new stylistic directions..."

Bio

Their unique rhythmic concept is what separates them from most any other jazz quartets. All of their music, original or not, is base on the percussive concepts that they have accumulated throughout their experiences. Some of The Curtis Brothers music is so original that even great musicians such as Ralph Peterson has performed some with his world famous, "Ralph Peterson's Fo'tet." From 2001, The Curtis Brothers have been performing around the U.S. and abroad. Their original sound has captivated audiences from New York, California to India. Most of the time the members are seen playing together with the 7-piece Latin-jazz ensemble, "Insight." With only four members and with music that is arranged for the rhythm section, The Curtis Brothers are free to explore so many more avenues of music. Even as they explore odd meters, world music, and group improvisation, they keep their audiences on the edge of their seats getting ready to jump up and dance.

Individually, the members of The Curtis Brothers Quartet are or have been sidemen for some of the greatest musicians alive such as Herbie Hancock, Eddie Palmieri, Chick Corea, Jimmy Greene, David Valentin, Kenny Werner, Miguel Zenon, Ralph Peterson, Brian Lynch, Gary Burton, Ralph Irizzary and Donald Harrison.

They released their album "Blood, Spirit, Land, Water, Freedom" in 2009 and are due to follow up with their 4th release "Completion of Proof" in Spring 2011. The album will feature musical giants such as Brian Lynch, Donald Harrison, and Ralph Peterson to name a few. Downbeat Magazine gave their 2009 release 4 stars, the All About Jazz Newspaper in New York has featured them many times, receiving a nomination for the 2009 Independent Music Award and Best Latin Jazz Album of the year from the widely popular blog The Latin Jazz Corner.

Recently, they were interviewed on a 3 hour broadcast on WKCR 89.9FM, and featured on Philadelphia's WRTI, Boston's WBGH, and New Jersey's WBGO for a live studio interview and recording in 2010. They performed at The Painted Brian in Philadelphia An Die Musik LIVE and The Litchfield Jazz Festival. They have also been featured in NY jazz clubs like Smalls, Sweet Rhythm, Zinc Bar, Cachaca, and many others. They are currently building a huge following with two regular performances in NYC. Hosting a Latin-Jazz Jam Nuyorican Poets Cafe once a month in the East Village of Manhattan and a weekly "Mambo Jazz" night at the prestigious and world famous B. Smith's Restaurant on 46th st. near Times Square. Coming off their hugely successful 2010 West Coast Tour, they sold out every performance! Selling out places such as Kummbwa and the San Francisco Jazz Festival!
